A Guide to the PROPERTY OWNERS

of the village of

Lansford station

&

Ashton

in

Mauch Chunk Township

The history of what is now Lansford Borough goes back to the mid 1840s when the Lehigh Coal & Navigation Co. expanded their mining operations from the old quarry near Summit Hill to the first deep mines in the Panther Creek Valley.  The village or patch town of Ashton grew up around these first mines in the west end of the valley, Storm Hill came shortly afterward in the east end.  There were several other patch towns such as Andrewsville, Jamestown & Skintown, but of these only Andrewsville remains in existence to form part of modern Lansford.  From its birth, coal mining was the area’s main industry.  It is said that the LC&N kept other industries out of the valley so as they didn’t deplete the labor pool.  Only in later years did the silk and garment industry make inroads in the town and then only because their labor pool consisted mainly of women.

It was on July 1, 1876 (one year after the publishing of this atlas) that the villages of Storm Hill and Ashton merged into the borough of Lansford.  From 1880 to 1890 the town nearly doubled in population.  By 1910 it was the most populous borough in the county, reaching its peak around 1930 with a population of nearly 10,000.  Since that time, what with the decline of the anthracite industry, the population is about half that peak.

NOTES ON THE TRANSCRIPTION:  Lansford proved to be the most difficult of the sections of the county to transcribe due to the smaller print used for property owners.  Only a few of the lots had street numbers given and I have provided them accordingly.  In all cases, I stuck to the name spelling as it appeared in the atlas, although some names, like Brisland and Brislin, are no doubt the same.  The Lehigh & Wilkes Barre Coal Co. was the majority owner of property in the town at the time the atlas was printed.  They owned both mining operations and housing, but since these properties do not pertain to genealogical research, I have omitted them here.  So as the web page isn’t too large, I’ve divided the list of property owners into two different pages.  They are:

Property owners Allen to Lewis
