In the VILLAGE of

MILLPORT

(Also known as Aquashicola),

IN THE TOWNSHIP OF Lower Towamensing,

                                            CARBON COUNTY, pa.

In

1875

The village of Millport can be traced back to about 1806 when George Ziegenfuss constructed a gristmill along Mill Creek, just north of where it empties into Aquashicola Creek.  The village flourished for decades, hosting various mills, a large tannery and a paint factory.  The name of the village changed to Aquashicola around the 1860s when a post office was established there.  Pennsylvania already had Millport in Potter County, so as to avoid confusion, the name of the Carbon Co. village was changed.  With the coming of the giant factory complexes of the NJ Zinc Co. in the 1890s, the village of Palmerton was born and began to grow rapidly.  Much like the villages of Lehigh Gap and Hazardville, the village of Aquashicola was swallowed up in Palmerton’s expansion.  But unlike these two other villages, Aquashicola continues to exist, more or less in whole, as a part of the borough of Palmerton, lying at its eastern most edge.
