A Guide to the PROPERTY OWNERS

In the Township of

PENN FOREST,

CARBON COUNTY, pa.

In

1875

Before the formation of Carbon County in 1843, part of the eastern section of this township, especially that area around Meckesville, was part of Monroe County.  Mountainous and heavily wooded, the boundary between Carbon and Monroe counties was re-defined slightly in the late 1990s along the southeast border.  When Carbon Co. was first set up, this section was not populated, but today is the site of numerous housing developments.

Like Kidder Twp. to the north, Penn Forest is located on the Pocono Plateau.  In the west along the Lehigh River, the plateau drops off sharply to the river below forming the most impressive portion of the Lehigh Gorge.  Also like Kidder, lumbering was a major industry into the late 19th century.  Farming also occurred on the flat sections of the township.  Today, farms still cover some of the area, but the township has also seen a surge in population as it has become dotted with many new homes and housing developments.

Prior to the great flood of 1862, a portion of the village of Penn Have was located along the Lehigh below Stony Creek.  Following that flood, that section of the village was never rebuilt.
