of the village of

summit hill

in

mauch chunk township

Page 1

Located on the top of Sharpe Mountain (also known as Pisgah Mountain) about 9 miles from the Lehigh River and Mauch Chunk, Summit Hill was one of the earliest coal mining villages and the site of the discovery of Anthracite Coal in Northampton County by Philip Ginder in 1793.  Born as a company town of Josiah White’s Lehigh Coal & Navigation Co. (LC&N) about 1819, the village grew slowly at first.  Besides the early coal quarries, the western end of the Gravity Railroad (later known as the Switchback RR) was located here, and as mining grew in the adjacent Panther Valley plains brought the coal up from the valley to Summit Hill where they were sent to the Lehigh River by the Gravity Railroad.  Most of the rail operations were along what was then Railroad St.  The railroads are long gone, and this street is now known as Ludlow St.
