Wartime Letters home

During the era of the of the mid 1800s, from the War in Mexico to the Civil War, local soldiers often wrote letters home of their experiences, and these letters would find their way into the local newspapers.  They give some insight into the day-to-day life of the common soldiers of those wars, and some insight into the writers themselves.  Unfortunately, these letters were only occasionally signed, and in many cases only initials or a pseudonym was used.  Where I can identify the writer, I’ve added some biographical information on him.

I’ve mostly stayed true to the original writings.  Grammar, spelling, punctuation, &c., is as the original writer wrote it.  In a few cases, I’ve made some corrections that may well have been “typos” from the newspaper, but fully noted the correction below the letter.

As time goes by, I hope to uncover and transcribe more of these letters.  In the meantime, the following is what I have come across.
