This list shows members of the early Presbyterian Church in Mauch Chunk. Besides giving the basic information on their membership, it also is valuable in that the notes made by Rev. Richard Webster give information on how and when some members died or married, and in some cases who the member is related to.
More
than the Baptismal or Marriage list, this list points out the connection
between the Presbyterian Church in Mauch Chunk to its “Mother Church”, in
Ireland. Many of the church’s early
members had been members of the Presbyterian Church at Articlave in Northern
Ireland. Co. Derry lies along the north
coast of Ireland between counties Antrim and Donegal. The River Bann separates Derry from Antrim, and it was from along
the River Bann that many early members came.
Dunboe was one of the parishes of Co. Derry, and Articlave was it’s
major village. The small city of
Coleraine lies a few miles to the east of Articlave.
Dunboe
Parish’s other Presbyterian Church was a few miles to the south of Articlave in
the village of Ballinrees. This church
is mentioned here as the “Seceding Church”.
Among the members of that church who later belonged to the Mauch Chunk
Church were my own family, the Stirlings of Knockmult.
This
list also points out the further migration of it’s members. Many are noted as having removed to Quincy,
Illinois. Quincy lies along the
Mississippi River, and though it was an “end destination” for some, for others
it was just a jumping off point for places further west. One of the main places of westward migration
(after Quincy) was “The Irish Community” in Sullivan Co., Missouri. Several families mentions below settled in
Sullivan Co., including five of my Sterling great grand uncles. This community of farmers was also known as
“The Sterling Community”. Many
descendents of the Sterlings and other families of the Bann Valley (who had
been members of the church in Mauch Chunk) continue to live in Sullivan Co.
today.
