Argroves

The first record of my Argroves / Hargroves family is the 1830 Laurens County, South Carolina Census. The Allen Argroves family as well as the George Roberts family are listed on page 202. I believe that as far back as 1830 my Argroves/ Hargroves family had ties to my Roberts family.

Allen Argroves / Hargroves, (b. abt. 1790 in South Carolina, died between 1870-1880 in Meriwether County, Georgia) was my 3rd great grandfather. I believe him to have been a part of a cluster migration from Laurens County, South Carolina to Meriwether County, Georgia between 1830-1834 along with branches of the Fuller, Miller and Roberts families .

Allen Argroves is listed in the 1840, 1850, 1860 and 1870 Meriwether County, Georgia census. Allen married Mary A. Unknown (possibly Miller) likely between 1820-1830 if Mary is indeed the mother of all the children who are listed in the household in the 1850 Meriwether County, Georgia Census. It is my speculation that Mary A. Unknown was likely the second wife of Allen Argroves. There was a 21 year age difference between Allen & Mary A.

In the 1880 Meriwether County, Georgia Census, 70 year old widow Mary Argroves lived three households away from the home of Jones Roberts who housed his own mother Sarah Miller Roberts. I believe it possible that Mary Argroves and Sarah Miller Roberts were sisters though I have not yet been able to prove it.

During the Civil War, Allen and his wife Mary A. sadly lost two of their three sons, Mathias and Allen. Lucky for me, Mathias had already married and fathered four children before losing his life. Allen (son) also fathered children before losing his life to the war.

I have had a difficult time finding the parents of Allen Argroves. I believe his surname to have originally been Hargrove/s and through verbal changes over the years eventually became Argroves. I also believe that nearly all of the people currently in Meriwether County, Georgia with the last name Argroves are likely descendants of (my) Allen Argroves.

The connection between my Argroves and Roberts families continued from 1830 through the 1850's and probably longer. On the 1850 Meriwether County, Georgia Census the Argroves family, as well as the George Roberts family lived in the vicinity of Jones Mill. The occupation of Allen Argroves was listed as a miller (probably at Jones Mill) in the 1850 census. In 1856 daughter of Allen Argroves, Mary Elizabeth Argroves married George Martin Roberts, likely grandson of neighbor George Roberts.
