Reed is a somewhat common name in the English language, but fortunately, I have many relatives in this branch who have done a great amount of research before me. This page is dedicated to all the Reeds, living and dead, who saved letters, photos, newspapers, and stories of their families. It's almost like they were waiting for me!

The earliest Reed in the tree is Samuel Reed, b. about 1765 in Massachusetts. He married Mary (Unknown), and had at least one child, Major Reed. Major was born September 13, 1789 in New York, and died July 26, 1879 in Belpe, Washington County, Ohio. Major married Salvina Barstow, b. August 1799 in Rhode Island. Together, they had 9 children:

  1. Sylvester S. Reed, b. September 1, 1816
  2. Manly Wilson Reed, b. December 24, 1817
  3. Olive Reed, b. about 1819
  4. Amanda A. Reed, b. about 1822
  5. Anna Maria Reed, b. 1823
  6. Caleb Richmond Reed, b. November 14, 1826
  7. Frances Barion Reed, b. December 26, 1828
  8. Franklin Barstow Reed, b. December 26, 1828
  9. Cornelia S. Reed, b. 1831

Caleb Reed was a doctor in the Civil War, and in the 1880 census, he was still practicing medicine in Middleport, Ohio. He married Elizabeth Sarah Torrence, b. 1831 in Ohio. The couple had at least 4 children, all born in Meigs County, Ohio:

  1. Jessie Fremont Reed, b. 1857 (she may have married a Fremont, as she is buried with her parents, with her name reading "Jessie Fremont" on the stone.)
  2. William Reed, b. 1860
  3. Frank Dudley Reed, b. June 30, 1862
  4. Anna Reed, b. about 1867

Frank Reed became one of, if not the first editor of the Shelton (NE) Clipper in 1885. He ran it for some time with his brother, William, as well as on his own until his death in 1911. I have a copy of his last paper, dated November 2, 1911. He married Harriet May McKnight July 16, 1885 in Adams County, Nebraska. Harriet (Hattie) was born February 21, 1867 the fourth child of DeWitt and Selina (Butin) McKnight. I have a copy of a handwritten letter she wrote to future husband, Frank. The handwriting is so fine, and the parchment paper so thin, that it copied both sides and is hard to read. I transcribed it to the best of my ability, though, and you can read it here.

Frank and Hattie had four children, 3 girls and 1 boy:

  1. Hazel Reed, b. May 30, 1886 in Shelton. Married Edgar Lafayette Templin
  2. Clifford Reed
  3. Wauneta Reed, b. 1894 married Leroy Wolcott
  4. Geneva Reed, b. April 1, 1898 in Shelton.

Geneva married Roy Elmer Wolford about 1924, and had three children:

  1. Robert Reed Wolford
  2. Janice Butin Wolford
  3. Patricia Jeanne Wolford, my grandmother

Roy and Geneva parted in the early 1930's. More about them can be found on the Wolford Page.
