The Todd Family of Caroline County, Maryland

Welcome

Hello friends and fellow researchers, welcome to my little place on the web!

Unfortunately I am not able to do research for others, due to family and occupational priorities. If I have nothing on your line of descent listed on my gedcom, I am sorry but chances are that I do not know anything about your ancestors. Also, the 1910 to 1920 time period is usually my cut-off point for genealogical research. So if your eldest sister or brother is listed in my gedcom but you are not, please believe me when I say that it is not personal. It boggles my mind the number of times I have received emails from people who are either outraged or indignant because I have "missed half of their family" and "how could this happen?" so sorry, no harm intended. The colonial and early federal periods of our history is where I like to do my research, after 1900 seems much too recent for me. I concentrate on families that lived on the Delmarva Peninsula and do not tarry long beyond our sandy soil.

The Todd ancestral home Cabin Ridge was purchased by my great great grandparents Francis Swiggett & Elizabeth (Stevens) Todd in 1881 from the heirs of Theodore Handy and from that time on has been the home place of the Todd family of Harmony, Maryland. It is currently the home of Michael P. Todd, great great grandson of Frank & Lizzie (Stevens) Todd, whose parents Alva & Rose (Scala) Todd spent considerable effort in preserving the house. The Maryland Historical Trust Publication "Inventory of Historic Sites in Caroline County" has this home identified as "Car-48 Greek Revival House" at Harmony, circa 1850. And goes on to say "The Greek Revival House stands in an open stretch of farmland about a mile north of Harmony. The house is the only extant domestic example of this nationally popular mid-nineteenth-century style on Maryland's Eastern Shore. (There is a similar house nearby in Seaford, Delaware.) Even if the house were not locally unique, it would be notable for the care the builder and later owners have lavished on it. Specially notable are its fine temple front with full pediment, its careful entrance door trim, and its crisp interior woodwork." According to family tradition Theodore Handy constructed the two story section of the house in the early 1850s, adding on to an existing earlier home (which is now the kitchen wing). The land on which this house stands was patented on 20 January 1664 by Thomas Clarke (of Calvert Co., MD) and originally contained 400 acres of land on Fowling Creek. The property was later owned by the Edmondson family and then by William Stevens the father of Walter Stevens. (First Dorchester Families, 1984, by Calvin W. Mowbray)

TODD DNA STUDY

You can join one of two Todd DNA studies at FamilyTreeDNA. Click on "Surname Projects," then on "T," then one of the two Todd groups. Apparently my Dorchester County, Maryland Todd ancestors are unrelated to the Todds in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Kentucky or Anne Arundel County, Maryland, which is what I suspected.

If you have any records that you would like to share please to do not hesitate in contacting me. I do ask though, that information be sent in either text or ".rtf" (rich text format). Thank you for visiting.
