1920 Federal Census

1920 and of the progeny of George Miller Carr, James Robert Carr is now 72 years old, Marcus Alonzo Carr is 67 and Joseph Miller Carr is 62. These men are all that is left of this generation of descendants.

In 1920 James Robert Carr, 72 years of age is still living in the Liberty Chapel area near Bear Creek. His third wife, Mattie, is 52 years old. The only children still in the household are; Edwin Clinton (listed as Clinton), now age 17; Beatrice, age 15; Everette Lee Carr, 14 years of age and the youngest child of James R., Bessie Lucille (listed as Lucile), is 12 years old.  View a transcription of the James Robert Carr household in 1920.

Marcus Alonzo "Lonnie" Carr is missing. Could not locate him in the 1920 census. He does not appear in the census index; he is not in the household of any of his children; and a page by page search through Beat 2, Attala County, Mississippi does not locate him. Lonnie's wife, Nannie, died in 1919. They had been married about forty-three years at the time of her death. When the Federal census was conducted in 1920 Lonnie was a widower and all of his children had left home. He would have been alone. Apparently, so alone that we cannot find him.

Joseph Miller Carr - Joe Carr is the youngest of the surviving sons of George Miller Carr. He was sixty-two on his last birthday. In the 1920 census he is listed as a farmer. His wife Ola is now forty-six. In the household with them are Nell, age 20, Lucille, age 17, Joseph W., age 14 and Malcolm Lamar, now 11 years old.   View a transcription of the Joseph Carr household in 1920.

Lucy Ella Carr - You will recall that Ella is married to George A. Eddleman and lives in Weir, Choctaw County, Mississippi. George is 58, Ella is 52 and they have five children living at home, Grover P., age 31, George W., age 19, Jewell, age 14, and Emmett Carr Eddleman, age 8 years.  View a transcription of the George Eddleman household in 1920.

Emmett Carr, son of James Robert Carr, died on 17 November 1916. Emmett served in the capacity of Sheriff of Attala County for a period of time. He was married to Kittie Black and they had a son, Amos. Amos would now be about 11 years old. It is not known what happened to Kittie or Amos.

Robert M. Carr - Robert is now 48 years old. He is living with his family in High Point Village, Winston County, Mississippi. His wife, Allie Porter Carr is 37 and their daughter, Annie R. is 2 years old. Robert who obviously married late in life is a merchant of a General Store.  View a transcription of the Robert M. Henry Middleton Carr - Henry is a Retail Merchant in McCool Town, Attala County, Mississippi in 1920. Henry is 43 years of age. His wife, Eula (Sarah Eula Norman), is 40 and the children still living at home are listed as Grace, age 18, Henry M. Jr., age 15, and Ellie, age 12.   View a transcription of the Henry M. Jason Carr - Jason and his family are living in Leflore County, Mississippi. He is 42 and listed as a merchant in General Merchandise. His wife, Kittie (Katherine) is 38 and they have one child, Emmett S. Carr, age 12 years.  View a transcription of the Jason Carr household in 1920.

Alice Estelle Carr - Alice goes by the name Estelle. Estelle is 32 years old and is married to James C. Neighbors, 40. They reside in the Liberty Chapel area with their children, Luther, age 14, Jewel, age 10, Frank, age 6, and George, age 3 years and 10 months. Ira Thornton Carr - Ira Thornton is 30 years of age and still single, but don't give up hope, he will marry Alma Winters a few months after the 1920 census is taken. He and Alma took out a marriage license at the Attala County Courthouse on 14 September 1920. But, when the census was taken, Ira was in the household of his older brother, Jason Carr, in Leflore County, Mississippi. He was apparently working in his brother's General Merchandise Store.

Katie Ann Carr - Katie was in the home of her parents, James Robert in 1910 at age 18. Apparently she left the household some time after the 1910 census. Possibly she was married but no record of a marriage is listed in the Attala County Marriage Index. So, Katie is lost to us.

Laura Belle Carr - Laura married W. J. "Jodie" Wade about 17 January 1913 in Attala County, Mississippi. In 1920 Laura is listed as 25 years of age. Her husband, Jodie is 30 years old. They live in the Liberty Chapel area where Jodie works in a saw mill. They have three children; Twins, Lois and Louise, age 3, and Ella L. age 1 year and 3 months.   View a transcription of the Jodie Wade household in 1920.

Thomas J. Carr - Thomas was born 22 August 1897. He died on 14 October 1917. He was just 20 years old. Thomas is buried in Bear Creek Cemetery. In time, his parents would be buried beside him.

Flora Mae Carr - Flora Mae married Luther Bennett about 7 October 1916. In 1920 Luther, a farmer is 24 years old. Mae is 21 years of age and they live in the Liberty Chapel area with their young daughter, Norene, age 2.  View a transcription of the Luther Bennett household in 1920.

Cora Bridges Carr - Cora was ten years old in 1910. In 1917 she married W. C. Steward (license issued 13 October 1917). Cora would have been about 17, possibly 18 years of age. Could not locate W. C. Steward or Stewart in the 1920 census in Attala County or in Mississippi.

John W. Carr - In 1920 John would be 19 years old. Failed to locate John in the 1920 census. In 1927 (license issued 29 January 1927), John married Clara Orr in Attala County, Mississippi.

Florence Carr - Florence is the widow of Henry Alexander Carr, who died about 1871. Florence is now alone, her only son, Luther Henry now being 48 years old with a family of his own. Florence has relocated to Kosciusko where she lives in a rented house. Florence is now 68 years of age.  View a transcription of the census for Florence Carr in 1920.

Luther Henry Carr - Luther is now 48 years old and is in Leflore County, Mississippi, working as a farmer on a rented farm. He is married to Susan (Susie) Landrum, now 44. They have four children living with them; Pansy D., age 16, Vardaman, age 15, McKnight, age 11, and H. A., a son aged 8.  View a transcription of the Luther Henry Carr household in 1920. The oldest child of Luther and Susie, Edwin Carr is now 21 years of age and it is believed that he was listed in the 1920 census as Edwin G. Carr living in Sumner, Tallahatchie County, Mississippi and working as a salesman in the grocery business.

Pinkey E. Carr - Pinkey is married to Elmer T. Black and still living near Weir in Choctaw County, Mississippi. Elmer is now 45 years of age and is a farmer. Pinkey is 44 and they have seven children living at home. The children are; Lester S., age 25, Rufus P., age 19, Reuben W., age 17, Hazel, age 14, Emmett Carr, age 11, Elmer, age 9, and Pinkey, age 5.  View a transcription of the Elmer Black household in 1920.

The eldest son of Elmer and Pinkie, Winfield, now 22 years of age, married Myrtle C., 25 years old and they are living a short distance away from his parents. At this time, Winfield is a farmer like his father.  View a transcription of the Winfield Black household in 1920.

Lieura J. Carr - Lura, you will recall, is married to William S. 'Will' Black and they live in Choctaw County, not far from Weir, Mississippi where Will is a farmer. Will is 41 and Lura is 40 years of age. They have six children still living at home; Edna, age 19 (a public school teacher), Herbert A., age 17, Effie C., age 15, Alvin T., age 13, William T., age 8 and Arnold A., age 5.  View a transcription of the Will S. George Marion Carr - George Marion was 35 years old in 1910 and was a farmer on a farm that he owned free and clear in Beat 2 of Attala County. He was married to Effie Leach who was 28. They had five children ranging in age from 8 months to ten years. The family cannot be located in 1920. They do not appear to be in Attala County or Mississippi. Further research will be necessary.

Alonzo Carr - In 1920 Alonzo and his family were on Main Street in McCool Town, Attala County, Mississippi. He was employed as a Dry Goods Merchant. Previously, Alonzo and his brother Reuben operated a Dry Goods business in McCool, but the business could not support two families and Reuben relocated to Weir in Choctaw County. With Alonzo, in McCool, is his wife, Stella Turner Carr, age 31 and their five children; Ersell, age 14, Clyde, age 13, Nannette, age 11, Stella Lou, age 6, and Janie, age 4 months. Also in the household, most likely on a temporary basis, was Alonzo's brother, Plummmer Henry Carr, age 26.  View a transcription of the Alonzo Carr household in 1920.

Reuben Carr - In 1910 Reuben was farming and, a short time later, he and his brother, Alonzo tried to make a living in the Dry Goods business in McCool. The business failed and Reuben and his family relocated to Weir, Choctaw County, Mississippi on January 21. 1919 where he opened and operated a grocery business. In 1920, Reuben and his family lived Front Street in Weir. Reuben was 35 years old with his wife, Etta (Henrietta Margaret Huffman) age 33. With them are their surviving children, Bessie Margaret, age 13, Everette Houston, age 11, Guy Reuben, age 9 and Wilbert Marcus, age 2 years.   View a transcription of the Reuben Carr household in 1920.

Bunyan Emmett Carr - Bunyan went by the name Emmett. Sometimes he is shown as Emmett B. Carr. But, could not locate his whereabouts in 1920. It is believed that he married shortly after the 1910 census enumeration at age 21. It is also believed that he had three children before 1920. The family was located in Choctaw County in 1930. Still searching.

Arnold Alexander Carr - Arnold married Virgie Alma Black about 1 December 1912 in Attala County, Mississippi. In 1920, Arnold is 27 years of age and is farming in the Liberty Chapel area of Attala County. Virgie is 23 and they have two children; Alonzo L., age 6 years and 11 months and Helen R., who is 3 years and 8 months of age.  View a transcription of the Arnold A. Carr household in 1920.

Plummer Henry Carr - In 1920 Plummer was 26 years old, single, a farm worker and, as noted earlier, was in the household of his brother, Alonzo Carr in McCool Town, Attala County, Mississippi.

Louisa Carr - Louisa went by the name Louise. In 1920 Louise would have been 25 years old. Some time prior to 1918, Louise married Goar Miller who was in the military. He died in 1918 at Camp Pike, Arkansas. It is not known what happened to Louise Carr Miller immediately after the death of Goar Miller, but it is believed that she married a man named Lyon. It is also believed that Mr. Lyon was also in the military. There is an indication that Bernice was born in South Carolina. Louise Carr Miller Lyon with her daughter, Bernice Maxine Lyon eventually found their way to California.

Joseph's children that have left home in 1920 are Charles, Eunice, Bertha, Lois, and Ethel.

Charles H. Carr - In 1920 we located Charles in Tunica County, Mississippi. Charles owns his home free and clear and is also the owner and operator of a retail store. Charles is a merchant, age 43, married with two children. Charles's wife, Mary Belle is 43 and their two sons are; Charlie H., age 16 and Carroll, age 5.  View a transcription of the Charles H. Bertha Carr - Bertha married Sidney Rainwater on or about 17 June 1910. Almost ten years later Sid and Bertha Rainwater are living in Calhoun County, Mississippi. Sid is 38 years if age and Bertha is 30.  View a transcription of the Sidney Rainwater household in 1920.

Eunice, Lois and Ethel Carr are no longer living with Joseph and Ola. It is not known where these three young women have gone. Perhaps not very far. Eunice was born in 1880 and at age 20 (1900), she was at home. She most likely got married in her early twenties and now lives with her husband. Bertha was 20 years old in 1910 and that is the last time she was found at home. Lois was 18 years old in 1910 and would now be 28. She is probably married as well. In any event we have lost contact with these three individuals.
