As as young boy I recall listening to my grandpa speak of the time when his mother spoke solely German to him. He began to recite words in German. First came the numbers:
eins, zwei, drei, vier, fünf, sechs, sieben, acht, neun, zehn
My grandmother told me about a man named Conrad Wickiser who was her great-grandfather. His parents came from Germany before 1800. She showed me information regarding this family and where they were from. My interest in languages and history began to swell in my young noggin. My grandmother introduced me to genealogy actually, because I recall buying a book that had nice diagrams and tables where you could write down your family history.
She had information about a man named Conrad Wickiser and he was like the patriarch and her great-great grandfather. I wrote these names in my book, in that penmanship of a young man. Still unsure but neat.
After at least 20 years, I had always heard about my roots, knew the names and dates, knew birthdays, that was easy things to remember. But there was something else, I wanted to honor my ancestors to thank them for surviving, so I may be alive today.
