Many other sources tell you how to get started, and I feel that they can tell it better than I can.
However, I have two pieces of advice: talk to your relatives to get family history while you still can, and keep track of
your research so you don't duplicate your efforts. Family Tree Maker has an online tutorial
which gives some good advice for beginners.

My mom has told me a couple of stories about her grandmother, Augusta Mayne (Meyn) Burrell. She was married to Walter Burrell and they had 10 children and lived in Fort Dodge, IA. Apparently, Grandma Burrell was very concerned with family harmony. When her kids didn't get along with the neighbors, she would pack the whole house and move in a day, and send one of the kids to Grandpa's work to "tell Daddy where we live now." This must have some basis in fact, because I have checked the city directories for over a 20 year period and they had more than 10 different addresses during that time!
I uploaded my GEDCOM to Rootsweb's WorldConnect. Go to caysedai Database to see it.
Family History
UPDATE: I recently (December 1999) took on two mailing lists at Rootsweb. I have created a page for the IAWEBSTE list.
I just started actually doing genealogy around August 1995. I did a little research off and on
between the birth of my second daughter and the move from Chicago to Fort Dodge, IA. In
January 1997, my mother-in-law died and we received some genealogical information which really
opened up new lines of research for me.
