Uley 1876
ULEY is a village and parish in Dursley union, containing, by the census of 1861, 1230, and in 1871, 1156 inhabitants, and 1492 acres; in the deanery of Dursley, archdeaconry of Gloucester, diocese of Gloucester and Bristol, hundred of Berkeley, West Gloucestershire; 2 and a half miles east from Dursley, 4 south from Frocester and 5 east from Berkeley Road Stations on the Bristol and Birmingham Railway. The rectory, in the incumbency of the Rev. Charles Chapman Browne, M.A., is valued at £250 per annum, with residence and 15 acres of glebe land, and is in the patronage of the Lord Chancellor. The church is a modern built Gothic edifice, dedicated to St. Matthew, consisting of nave, chancel, north and south aisles, and tower containing one bell and a clock. The Baptists and Independents have places of worship here. There is a National School for children of both sexes. Uley Bury hill was formerly a Roman encampment, and coins and other Roman remains have been found in the neighbourhood at various times. A tumulus, or place of sepulchre, was also discovered at Westhill, in 1821. The poor have charitable bequests producing about £8 per annum. The village feast is held annually on the first Sunday in September. The rateable value of this parish is £3758.
