Church Records for the Year 1804
2nd Saturday January 1804. Church met at Big
Spring and after worship proceeded to business.
1st Obediah Hammons and James Hendrick met according to appointment and gave
satisfaction.
2nd Brother Russell Morgan and Brother Obediah Hammons dismissed by letter.
3rd We considered the distress of our sister church on Mulberry. We send our
Brethren namely Jesse Dodson, Thomas Jeffries, William Stroud, James Sims,
Ritchard Harper and Joseph Cogdal.
4th Received Mary Dodson by letter.
5th An acqusation brought against Samuel Lusk for saying that he wished fewer
people would attend church meetings without they would…do better it not being
brought according to the eighteenth of Matthew's Gospel. Lusk complained against
the church and rent himself from her but previous to his renting the church
confessed that wrong and delt with him for his own exception confessing the same
principle in wishing that fewer would attend the meetings.
February the 1st Day 1804. Church met at Brother
Richard Harper's to examine the conduct of Mark Shelton, and found him gilty of
horseracing on the Sabbath Day and at another time for which the church exclude
him.
2. Brother Jesse Dodson appointed to labour with Brother James Hendrick for
reports of drunkness.
February the 8th Day 1804. Church met at Brother
Harper's to labour with Brother James Hendrick and lay him under bonds and
referd to March meeting.
2. William Clark laid under bonds and referd to March meeting.
February the Friday before Second Saturday 1804
Church met at Big Spring and on Saturday dismist Nathan….
March the 2nd Saturday 1804. Church met and after
worship proceeded to business at Big Spring
1st Opened a door for the reception of members and received Fielden (?)
Cleveland by letter.
2nd James Hendricks excommunicated for a charge of drunkness and refusing to
face the church.
3rd William Clark excommunicated for the charge of saying and forsaying sundry
times.
4th Susanna Campbell excommunicated for the charge of leaving the church in
disorder and saying if she could not git a letter of dismissal she could join
others as she did us except baptism.
5th Dorcas Davison received by letter.
6th Dismist Joseph Cogdal by letter.
April the 2nd Saturday 1804. Church met at Big
Spring and proceeded to business.
1st Opened a door for the reception of members and received James Cunningham by
letter.
2nd With regard to certain reports against Obediah Hammons and Nathan Morgan
Members of this Church we delegate Wm. Stroud, Thos. Jeffries, James Sims, Silas
Clark, Joseph Neal, Peter Neal, Obediah Jennings to go with church authority to
Rob Camp the 1st Saturday in May to deal with them in Gospel order.
In consequence of reports of Sister Elizabeth Campbell's joining the Methodist
Society we send our sisters Sarah Henderson and Hannah Neal to enquire into the
nature of the case.
May the 2nd Saturday 1804
Church met and after divine service proceeded to business.
1st Opened a door for the reception of members and received by letter Mary Green
and Thomas Cunningham.
2nd The report from Rob Camp read and approbated.
Obediah Hammons excommunicated for the charge of saying and forsaying. Also
Nathan Morgan excommunicated for the charge of failing to attend church meeting
and the following crimes of drunkness and offering to fight brother Isaac
Southern and for denying to live with his wife as scripture and matrimonial vows
enjoin.
3rd Elizabeth Campbell excommunicated for neglecting to attend her meeting and
for joining another society.
4th Difficulty between Isaac Land and John Hill laid over til next church
meeting in course and they both considered under the labour of the church for
their conduct at meeting referd til meeting in course.
June 2nd Saturday 1804. Church met at Big Spring
and after worship proceeded to business.
1st Opened a door for the reception of members and received Charles Going and
Catherine Mason by letter.
2nd A petition from Holston River read and approbated and a church meeting
appointed on the fourth Saturday in June to be attended by the following
members: Jesse Dodson, Wm. Stroud, Thomas Bridges, John Cunningham and Wm.
Weaver.
3rd John Hill releast from the charge against him and restord to his seat again.
4th In consequence of a distress with Sarah Lane and the church and referd to
next meeting in course and a committee appointed to labor with her of the
following members; Thomas Bridges, Wm. Stroud, Wm. Weaver, Jesse Dodson, John
Cunningham, Thomas Jeffries, Thomas Cunningham, James Roddy and …..Harper,
Hannah Hill and Lety Lane.
July 2nd Saturday 1804. Church met at Big Spring
and after worship proceeded to business.
1st Sarah Lane restord to her seat again.
2nd The report made from Holston and our delegates met according to appointment
and after divine service opend a door for the reception of members and received
the following members by letter James Going, Elisabeth Going, Hanna Going,
Edward Daniel, Ann Daniel, Rachel Hase, Williiam Hase, Mary Hase and Rachel
Moody.
3rd James Sims, James Hill, John Cunningham and Mercurius Cook appointed to
attend them on the fourth Saturday in July.
4th Leah Stinnett dismist by letter.
5th Isaac Lane releast from the charge against him and restord to his seat
again.
6th A request from War Creek answered and Jesse Dodson appointed to attend the
fourth Saturday in August.
7th A petition from Thompsons Settlement debated and Brother Jesse Dodson left
to the freedom of his own mind.
8th A petition from Rob Camp debated and Brother Jesse Dodson appointed to
attend on the first Saturday in August.
August Second Saturday 1804. Church met at Big
Spring and after worship proceeded to business.
1st Opened a door for the reception of members and received Mary Dodson by
letter.
2nd Church met at Holston according to appointment.
3rd Appointed members to attend on the fourth Saturday in August William Weaver,
Mercurius Cook, Silas Clark, Thomas Jeffries, William Stroud.
4th Delegates chosen for the Association namely Jesse Dodson and William Stroud.
5th Sarah Medlock dismist by letter.
6th A petition from War Creek answered and Thomas Jeffries, William Weaver and
John Hill appointed to attend the third Saturday in August.
September Second Saturday 1804. Church met at Big
Spring and after worship proceeded to business.
1st Report from Holston James Going excommunicated for denying of a bargain that
he had once told to brother David Davis between him and John Brand.
2nd Members appointed to attend on Holston on the fourth Saturday in September
Silas Clark, Ishum Clark, Thomas Jeffries, William Stroud, Ritchard Harper,
Jesse Dodson.
3rd Association letter read and approbated.
4th The tenth article in the rule of procedure crost out.
October Second Saturday 1804. Church met at Big
Spring and after worship proceeded to business.
1st The report from Blue Spring Holston River read and approbated first they met
and after worship proceeded to business and appointed a clerk to the business of
that arm.
2nd Members appointed to attend at Blue Springs on Holston on the fourth
Saturday in October instant to wit: Jesse Dodson, William Stroud, John Hill,
James Simes, John Evans, James Hill, John Neal.
3rd Agreed that Jesse Dodson or Daniel Martin give Sister Mary Williams a letter
of dismission if called for before next meeting.
November Second Saturday 1804. Church met at Big
Spring and after worship proceeded to business.
1st Report from Blue Spring on Holston and members appointed to attend on the
fourth Saturday in November George Stubblefield, Isaac Lane, Ritchard Harper,
Obediah Jennings, John Hill.
2nd Sister Mary Williams and Fanny Reynolds dismist by letter.
December Second Saturday 1804. Church met at Big
Spring and after worship proceeded to business.
1st Report from Blue Spring on Holston made and approbated and members to attend
fourth Saturday in January to wit: William Stroud, Thomas………, John
Cunningham.
2nd Mary Cunningham joined by letter.
3rd Martin and Mary Dodson dismist by letter.
