Church Record for the Year 1839
January Second Saturday 1839. Church met at Big
Spring and after worship proceeded to business.
1st Received Margaret Simmons by letter.
2nd Bro. Hirum Hurst licensed by the church to exercise his publick gift in any
way he may think the Lord directs him.
February Second Saturday 1839. Church met at Big
Spring and after worship proceeded to business.
1st Rec'd a petition for the Mouth of Barren Creek Church for our Brother
William Neil to attend them. In answer to said petition we appoint our Brother
William Neil to attend them at their March meeting to commence on Friday before
the third Saturday in March next.
March Second Saturday 1839. Church met at Big
Spring.
April Second Saturday 1839. Church met at Big
Spring and after worship proceeded to business.
1st Madison Neil excommunicated for the charge making use hard expressions
against Bro. Reubin Rose and the charge in accusing Bro. Rose of falsehood and
in saying he had proved it in the church and the church was wrong and laying
herself liable to be dealt with for not dealing with him and Bro. Rose.
May Second Saturday 1839. Church met at Big
Spring and after worship proceeded to business.
1st Agree to petition the Mouth of Barren Creek Church for the benefit of the
labour of Bro. Nathan McDowel and Brother William Williams to assist us in our
communion season at our next meeting.
2nd Brother Larken Harrel and Isaac Sanders appointed to bare our petition.
June Second Saturday 1839. Church met at Big
Spring.
July Second Saturday 1839. Church met at Big
Spring and after worship proceeded to business.
1st The church agree to take up a matter of difficulty and labor in it existing
between Bro. George Rose and Bro. John Bartlit. The labor of the church defered
to next meeting.
2nd Brethren appointed Deligets to the Association namely Hirum Hurst, William
Evans, Thomas Hurst and John Evans.
August Second Saturday 1839. Church met at Big
Spring and after worship proceeded to business.
1st The difficulty relative to Bro. George Rose and Bro. John Bartlet defered to
next meeting.
2nd Association letter read and approbated.
September Second Saturday 1839. Church met at Big
Spring and after worship proceeded to business.
1st Continued the reference relative to Bro. George Rose and Bro. John Bartlet
to next meeting.
October Second Saturday 1839. Church met at Big
Spring and after worship proceeded to business.
1st Isham Gipson excluded for his reprobate actions in having carnal knowledge
with a woman as acknowledged by himself.
2nd Received a petition from Davises Creek Church praying us to send them our
Brother Isaac C. Lane to attend them at their next meeting. In answer to said
petition we appoint our Bro. Isaac C. Lane to attend them accordingly.
3rd Margaret Simmons dismissed by letter.
4th The church then took up the matter relative to Bro. George Rose and Bro.
John Bartlet and the question being taken and the church being divided she
agreed to send to our Sister Churches for help namely Puncheon Camp, Mountain
Creek, Head of Barren and Ould Town Creek to assist us at our next meeting to
commence on Friday before the second Saturday in November next. Brethren
appointed to bare our petition to the different churches namely Bro. Isaac C.
Lane to Old Town Creek and Davises Creek Churches, Bro. Hirum Hurst to Mouth of
Barren Creek Church, Bro. Samuel Day to head of Barren Creek Church, William
Ritter to Puncheon Camp Church, William Marcum to Cedar Fork Church and Larken
Harrel to Mountain Creek Church.
November Friday before Second Saturday 1839.
Church met and after worship proceeded to business.
1st The committee petitioned for from the different churches attended and being
organized as a committee chose Bro. Tandy James moderator for the day and Bro.
Mark Hurst clerk after which the matter of difficulty heretofore existing
between Bro. George Rose and Bro. John Bartlet taken up and refered to said
committee which committee believe and say that Bro. John Bartlet is in an error
for retaining an unfavourable opinion of Bro. Rose and holding a bar against
him. The said Rose for refusing to pay him the full weight of hogs by a certin
pair of stilyards which stilyards was said not to be good. Therefore we say he
is no more of us while retaining the same against him and the said Rose.
3nd On Saturday rec'd a petition from our sister church at Puncheon camp praying
us to send them part of our ministerial labour. In answer to said petition we
appoint our Brother Hirum Hurst to attend them as often as his circumstance will
admit of.
December Second Saturday 1839. Church met at Big
Spring.
