Church Record for the Year 1840
January Second Saturday 1840. Church met at Big
Spring.
February Second Saturday 1840. Church met at Big
Spring.
March Second Saturday 1840. Church met at Big
Spring and after worship proceeded to business.
1st Took up request of Bro. John Hill for a letter of dismission for himself and
wife and after considerable altercation the question being taken by the church
whether he should have a letter of dismission or not. The church split in their
opinion on his not holding a bar against the institutions of the day and as such
his request could not be granted.
April Second Saturday 1840. Church met at Big
Spring and after worship proceeded to business.
Dismist William Ritter by letter.
May Second Saturday 1840. Church met at Big
Spring.
June Second Saturday 1840. Church met at Big
Spring and after worship proceeded to business.
1st John Hill and Thomas Harper excluded for sitting in fellowship with Mulberry
Gap Church and saying they would do it again when they knew their conduct in it
did hurt the church.
July Second Saturday 1840. Church met at Big
Spring and after worship proceeded to business.
1st The following named persons having separated themselves from the church by
meeting together and forming themselves into a separate boddy and as such is nor
more of us while continuing in the same. The above persons are namely James
Sims, Mercurius Cook, George Schultz, James Bartlet, Polly Hill, Polly Schultz,
Barthena Harper, Nancy Bartlet, Polly and William Cook, Rebecky Bartlet.
2nd Appointed Crisley Plank, Hirum Hurst and William Marcum Deligets to the
Association.
3rd Appointed Bro. Daniel Marcum to cite Sister Candice McMalon to attend next
meeting to answer to a report that is in circulation about her.
4th Nancy Hurst, Louisa Hurst and Mary Hurst excluded for leaveing the church in
disorder in not applying for a letter of dismission.
5th Bro. William Laffoon appointed to cite Sister Viney Flemings to attend next
meeting.
August Second Saturday 1840. Church met at Big
Spring and after worship proceeded to business.
1st Candice McMalon excluded for joining the Presbyterian Society and declareing
she held the principals of an open communion contrary to the principals of the
United Baptist.
2nd Vina Flemmings excommunicated for the sin of fornication.
3rd The church agree to adopt as their articles of faith the same articles
adopted by the Powels Valley Association as no articles of faith had ever bin
entered on the church book heretofore.
4th Association letter read and approbated.
September Second Saturday 1840. Church met at Big
Spring and after worship proceeded to business.
1st A charge brought by Bro. Thompson Hurst against Bro. George Rose for
warranting of him. Appointed Brethren John Breeding and Samuel Day and James
Jonson to cite Bro. Rose to attend next meeting.
2nd Rec'd a petition from our sister church at Punching Camp praying us to send
members of our church to set in fellowship so as to give each other a letter of
dismission to join other churches. In answer to said petition Samuel Day to
attend them accordingly.
October Second Saturday 1840. Church met at Big
Spring and after worship proceeded to business.
1st Took up the reference relative to Bro. Thompson Hurst and Bro. George Rose
and settled it to satisfaction of the church.
November Second Saturday 1840. Church met at Big
Spring and after worship proceeded to business.
1st Received James Bunch and Isabel Bunch by letter.
2nd Called Brother James Jonson to the office of Deacon for the church.
3rd The church agree to petition Mountain Creek Church, Mouth of Barren Creek
Church and Davises Creek Church for their ministerial Brethren to attend us at
our next meeting for the purpose of ordaining a deacon in our church. Appointed
William Evans to bare our petition to Davises Creek Church, Bro. Larkin Harrel
to bare our petition to Mouth of Barren Creek Church and Bro. Samuel Day to bare
our petition to Mountain Creek Church.
December Second Saturday 1840. Church met at Big
Spring and after worship proceeded to business.
1st Dismist Joseph and Susanah Priddy by letter.
