CHARLES DOBIE : GENEALOGY

Bill Dobie's Photo Album :
Port Arthur, Ontario, c.1922-1934

Album cover

William Lovell Dobie was born in Port Arthur, Ontario, on September 28, 1909. This small (6-1/2 by 5-inch) photo album was given to him as a Christmas present in 1922 by his friend James E. West. The photos don't seem to be in exact chronological order but they generally cover his early teenage years up to at least 1934 when he spent a year at Queen's University in Kingston, Ont. There are also two pages of photos of strange, barrack-like buildings which may be Ridley College in St. Catharines, Ontario, which he attended in his earlier years.

I've transcribed all names written on the photos so they can be found by word search, and I've speculated on many names and locations. Please contact me if you have corrections or new information.

Many people are identified only by their first names or nicknames, however surnames found below are: Andrews, Bonin, Burleigh, Burt, Callaghan, Cook, Coy, Cross, Dobie, Evans, Gooderham, Green or Greer, Lee, McBane, McConnell, McKay, Parry, Paulin, Platt, Scott, West, Wilmott, Zinc.

Inside front cover

Inside front cover and the dedication page : See a full-size image.

Inside cover: See enlarged page. The woman at left is probably "Lolly" (see page 4). The small photo at right is marked "Silver Islet 1927". The boys are probably my father and Don Cross (see photos on page 3).
Inscription on the dedication page:
To Bill
Remote from the marked and the beaten trail,
With our packs and tackle and old lunch pail,
We wended our way with our chins held high
And our heads all bared to the summer sky.

Christmas 1922

As the years roll on and our heads turn grey,
And we've travelled our span on life's highway
Fond memry will cast an appraising eye
On the paths we've trod in the years gone by.
