Hi Charlie,
This is in reply to Sserfecz in your newsletter of 10-1-02.
I found, in researching my ancestry, that --once I got the name of
an
ancestor
who was in the history books-- it was much easier to gather
information. You
might wish to search in your public library for information about
John of
Gaunt
and his family. He founded the House of Beaufort, from whom
descended Henry
the
IV, V, and VI of England. John had a long affair with Catherine
Swyndon
and, I
believe, eventually married her. Their illegitimate children were
legitimized
with the proviso that they would not seek the throne of England. Of
course
that
went by the boards.
You might also want to read about Geoffrey of Anjou who was reputed
to be the
founder of the House of Plantagenet. Geoffrey was the father of
Henry II of
England (the king in the movie Lion in Winter). He (Geoffrey) was
said to
wear
a planta genista (Spanish broom) in his hat. It was also said, by
some of
Geoffrey's subjects, that one of his female ancestors had congress
with the
devil
making Geoffrey their descendant(!) Whatever...
There is material regarding the Black Comyn and the Red Comyn in the
library
as
well. The Comyns of Scotland were the power behind the Scottish
throne for
100
years, their power coming to an end shortly after Robert the Bruce
murdered
the
chief Comyn in Greyfriars Church, Dumfries, circa 1314. There are
several
works
on the Comyn clan by Alan Young of Ripon University, Scotland. Try
Amazon.com if
your library doesn't have them.
Good luck! All us Cumminses will be eager to hear the results of
your
research.

Hi Charles,
Thank you so much again for your forwarding of Esther's reply from
CA. I
could not believe that someone out there had the same line of
information. I
did not know all that about John of Gaunt because most of my info was
oral
history passed from my great grandmother to my mom. Somewhere in
this union
is a connection to our Veatch side of the family as well. John of
Gaunt was
supposed to be friends with Chaucer. Chaucer lived in his home.
When the
Duchess of Panik died, Chaucer's work "The Lady in White" was written
about
her. Chaucer also talked about her (Blanche, Duchess of Panik) in
his satire
of the "Canterbury Tales". I did do some brief research on John a
couple
years ago. Curiosity got the best of me and I wanted to see what he
looked
like. I did find a stained glass window that was supposed to be a
close
likeness to him. It surprised me to find that there was some
resemblance to
a couple of my uncles.
I was not sure of the knight's name who was beaten in front of the
Church of
the Holy Sepulchre, and it was neat to find that his broom or yellow
plant
may have been carried in his hat! The female being in congress with
the
devil is also interesting. There was supposed to be an ancestor who
had
something to do with the publication of a book or encyclopedia of
witchcraft.
These are all clues for me. The Cummings and family were also
somehow
involved with the Salem witch trials.
One of the Comyns was supposed to be tall and one little. In our
family,
depending on genes, we are either short from about 5'4" for males to
very
very tall (great uncle was 7' 2"). Comyn the Red and Comyn the Black
research is a good idea. Through the years I have been concentrating
on the
closest of relatives I know, and going from present to past. This
can be
very frustrating. Common sense would be to start from way back to
the
present. It might be easier!!! Dumb me. Thanks again, I will let
you know
if I find anything interesting. ... And thanks again to you Esther of
CA! I
am going to have to rent "The Lion in Winter" again.

Hey,
Thanks for getting back to me so soon. To be honest I just started
and don't
have much, but every little bit helps I suppose. All's I know is my
father
Glenn Leslie Cummins born in Nebraska in 1901, one of 9 children, 8
sons, 1
daughter, the only name I can remember at the moment are Ira, Paul,
Charles,
John, Marie and of course my father, Glenn. His father named
Charles, don't
know his mother's name she died when dad was young, but her maiden
name is
Britt. I also remember my father saying that his only sister died
young I
think in the 1917 influenza epidemic. My fathers birthday is
8-26-1901, as
far as I know. He said he had to lie about it alot, I what I
remember he
joined the army when he was 13 years old. He also, said he was
General
Patton's chauffer. I have know clue is anything I said here tonight
will
help.
Please let me know, if you can make heads or tails of any of this.
And what
is your website, I don't seem to find it. I am not all that
knowledgeable
when it comes to this, but I would like to learn. I have spent days
looking
through different websites, and to no avail do I find anything, that
means
anything to me as of yet.
Thanks, I hope some of this helps and I look forward to hearing from
you.

Hi Charlie
I've been reading alot about the different Cummins's on your list. I
haven't
seen anything regarding my Cummins line but would like to be added to
your
list. Who knows maybe this will be the big break I'm looking for.
My gggrandfather's name was John Cummins, born either N.Y. or VT.
about 1814.
In each census that I've found him in he lists N.Y. as his birthplace
on one
and another he'll list VT. I have no idea if he has siblings or his
parents
names. I do know that he married Louisa Mary Brooks in Medina Co.,
Ohio in
1837. They lived in Kenosha Co., WI where all but one of their 9
children
were born. They moved to Blue Earth Co., MN in 1857 and to "Old
Janesville",
Waseca Co., MN in 1862. Does any of this sound familiar to anyone ?
Please
contact me at bfullercharter.net Thank you.

Bridget Cummings married Cady Roche/Roach
on Sept. 12, 1852 at St. Paul's Catholic Church of Blackstone, Mass.
He is my great-greatgrandfather. I never knew about her. I am
guessing
that she died, because he married (2nd) to Mary Hinchan on May 10,
1862
at the same church.
He was from Mitchelstown Ireland and 27 years old when he married
Bridget Cummings.
If anyone has Cummings relatives from this area, which is on the
border
of southeast Worcester County and the Rhode Island stateline please
contact me.
Thank you,
