Descendants of James GIRTEN
of Union County, Kentucky

Girten, Girtin, Girton, Guertin, . . . ?

The Girtens of Union County, Kentucky, are an interesting exercise in genealogy, particularly for an amateur genealogist such as myself. There were two main factors that led to my initially concentrating on this line of my wife's family.

This Girten clan first appears in the census records of Union Co. in the 1820 Census. Sometime between 1810 and 1820, James Girten moved his family (possibly including a nephew or brother) to the county. At the time of the 1820 census the Girten clan was comprised of two households. In the first household were James and his wife, Mary, both over the age of 45, 6 other males, ages 16 to 26, two females ages 10 to 16, and one female under the age of 10. The second household was headed by John Girten (son of James) with his wife, Mary Ann [Barron] Girten, both between the ages of 16 to 26, and one male child, under the age of 10, the first or second of John's and Mary Ann's ten children. From this clan has sprung the large number of Girten descendants, many of whom are included in this genealogy.

A major, unanswered question among those of us studying this clan (at least those that I have had communications with) is, WHERE DID JAMES AND HIS FAMILY COME FROM? This and several other questions are detailed in my Girten Questions Page. If you can shed any light on this or the other questions, please contact me via email at the address given below.

The pages that follow are my attempt to systematically organize the information that I have collected on James Girten and his descendants. For the information that follows, I am indebted to several researchers who have generously shared data from their extensive research. Any mistakes however are entirely my own. I would gratefully accept any corrections, additions, and commentary from any who might access these pages.
