MISCELLANEOUS CLIPPINGS

The following are miscellaneous newspaper clippings from my Grandmother’s scrapbooks. I have included articles that are about people who lived in Johnson, Washington Co, Arkansas. These are in no particular order and most are not dated. They are from various newspapers of the Northwest Arkansas area. Use your ‘search’ or ‘find’ button for faster research.


Prof. Walker Sells Farm Near Johsnon
Fayetteville, June 8 - Rayburn Peay, of Little Rock, has purchased the fruit farm of Professor Ernest Walker and will make this city his future home. Professor Walker teaches hortibulture in the uniersviry and all his scientific knowledge has been applied in the cultivation of this orchard. As a result it is one of the best young orchards in this part of the country and has a most promising future. The farm contains 160 acres, of which about 70 are in orchard. There are 4,500 apple trees and 2,000 peach trees. Mr. Peay is leaving the Capital City because of ill health.

BIRTH ANNOUNCEMENT
Mr. and Mrs. Frank Luper of Fayetteville announce the birth of a son yesterday in City Hospital.

MISS FRANCES REED BECOMES BRIDE OF DR. SPRINGALL
-The marriage of Miss Frances Alma Reed, daughter of Mrs. Fred P. Reed of Fayetteville, and Dr. Francis S. Springall, son of the Rev. and Mrs. H.S. Springall of Kerrville, Texas, was solemnized Sunday, January 19, at 5 o’clock in the First Presbyterian Church at Kerrville. The Rev. Mr. Springall and the Rev. William M. Logan officiated at the double ring ceremony. (description of music and dress) Mrs. J. Penn Reed of Fayetteville, sister-in-law of the bride, was batron of honor. She wore a grey crepe dress with black accessories and carried a bouquet of red carnations. Dr. W.H. Springall of Gloucester, Va., was best man, and J.S. Colley of Kerrville was usher. A reception followed the ceremony. Out of town guests included Mrs. Fred P. Reed, mother of the bride, and Mrs. J. Penn Reed, both of Fayetteville, and Dr. and Mrs. W.H. Springall of Gloucester. Dr. and Mrs. Springall will be at home in Gloucester after February 1.


BIRTHDAY DINNER
A birthday dinner was given Jan. 25 at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Edgar Bookout, honoring Lavina Bookout, Earl Bookout of Fayetteville and Mrs. Eddie Bookout of Springdale. Guests present were Eddie Bookout, Mrs. Earl Bookout and son, Dickie, Frances Bookout, and Mr. and Mrs. Arlis Dixon and daughters, Louise and Billie, of Springdale.
HICKS-MASON TO WED
Springdale, Oct 21 – (Special) – Mr. and Mrs. Earl Mason of Springdale announce the marriage of their daughter, Genevee, to Lewis Hicks, son of Mr. and Mrs. R.R. Hicks, also of Springdale. The wedding was an event of October 2 at the home of Alert Zachary, minister of the Church of Christ, who read the single ring ceremony. The bride wore a blue fall suit with black accessories. Before her marriage she was employed with Meyes Variety Store. They are residing temporarily in Springdale where Mr. Hicks is engaged in carpentry work.

RECENT BRIDE
Mrs. Bob B. Luper, the former Miss Elizabeth Hughes. The wedding took place Dec. 22, Rev. O. L. Gibson of the First Baptist church, Fayetteville officiating.

MARRIED 50 YEARS
Mr. and Mrs. B.B. Johnson celebrated their golden wedding anniversary December 19. They were married at the home of the bride’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. R.M. Lichlyter of Johnson, and have lived most of their lives in Johnson. They have three children and seven grandchildren, all of whom were present for the occasion. A son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Johnson, oberserved their 23rd wedding anniversary the same day. Out of town guests were Mrs. Opal Cook of Little Rock and A.S. Moore and family of Duncan, Okla.


CAR HIT BY FREIGHT AT JOHNSON CROSSING
- Billie Frank Cole, 22, of Johnson suffered minor injuries this morning at 7:25 o’clock when his car was struck by a south-bound freight at the Johnson crossing. Cole’s car was unable to stop when he heard the train coming, it was reported. Cole, who was inside the car, suffered cuts and bruises when his car was “scooted” along by the train. Attendants at the City Hospital reported this morning that Cole was admitted at 8 o’clock, but released after emergency treatment.


WOUNDED
-Springdale, May 2 (Special)- Pfc. Dewey Carl Yeager, 22, son of Mr. and Mrs. Roy Yeager of Route 4, Springdale, was wounded in action April 4 and is now in a military hospital in Korea, the Department of Defense has notified his parents. Private Yeager, who joined the Army in July 1950, suffered wounds in his left arm and leg. The wounds have not proven serious, and he will be returned to combat.


ACCIDENT FATAL TO YOUNG CHILD
Funeral Services at Baptist Church
Joyce Annett Dowell, 10 months old, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Billy Frank Dowell, who live three miles west of Fayetteville on Highway 16, was killed accidentally yesterday when she was struck by a truck her father was backing out of the yard. Funeral services were to be conducted this afternoon at 2 o’clock at the First Baptist Church by the rev. W.P. Murchison, pastor of the Calvary Baptist Church. Burial, under direction of Moore’s Funeral Chapel, was to be in the Mt. Comfort cemetery. In addition to the parents, survivors include the paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Harvell Dowell of near Fayetteville; the maternal grandfather and grandmother, Hugh Snapp of Benton and Mrs. Dotohy Snapp of Fayetteville; the paternal great grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. H.F. Dowell of Fayetteville and Mr. and Mrs. W.R. Peterson of Johnson; the maternal grandmothers, Mrs. Rebecca Wallace of Fayetteville and Mrs. Stella Snapp of Little Rock.

A surprise birthday dinner was given Sunday for Lavinia and Earl Bookout at the home of their parents, Mr. and Mrs. Edgar Bookout. Their birthdays being Saturday and Sunday. Others present besides their sister and brother, Mary Frances and Wayne were: Mrs. Mabel Dixon and daughters, Billie and Louise, Nadine and Pauline Ball, Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Wickware and John Wickware all of Johnson, Ether Dennis of Hindsville, Mr. and Mrs. Mike Parker of Wager, Mr. and Mrs. Eston Griffith, Mrs. Norman Reed and children, Stephen and Nancy, Mrs. Steve Reed, Mrs. Elgin Reed and Mae and G.W. Jett all of Fayetteville.


STONY POINT HELD COMMENCEMENT WEDNESDAY
Eighth grade commencement at Stony Point school southwest of Stpringdla was held Wednesday night with Judge I.R. Rothrock, County Examiner, J.R. Kennan and W.S. Campbell of Fayetteville as principal speakers. Thirteen are in the graduating class. They are:Winona Partain, Mary Lou Farish, Alice Ruth Greathouse, Robbie Shipp, Jane Thurman, Junior Hutton, Harold Dobbs, Mary K. Hendris, Leland Sutton, Rex Maxey, Leona Hughes, Jim Reed and Virginia Wood. Harold Dobbs is valedictorian and Winona Partain is salutatorian.

Nov 24 - Due to bad weather there was a great decrease in Sunday school attendance.
Paul Spurlock, who is at Fort Sill, Okla., spent last week-end with home folks.
Billie and Louise Dixon spent Sunday in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Edgar Bookout
Mr. and Mrs. Hosea Ball and son, Eugene visited Sunday in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Monroe Neal on highway 71.
Mrs. Loye Luper was given a shower Friday afternoon by her friends. Those present were Mrs. Tom Graves, Mrs. Ford, Nadine Graves, Mrs. Clifford Neal, Mrs. Charlie Graue, Mrs. Ward Graue, Mrs. Luther Stamper, Mrs. Cora Bookout, Lavinia Bookout, Mrs. Harold Cassat and Mrs. Leo Ball. Refreshments of cake and cocoa were served by the hostess.
Mr. and Mrs. Virge Wilkerson have moved to their new home.
A group of young people were entertained Thursday night with a weiner roast given by Earl Bookout, Leerie Ball and Bentley Bowman. Others present were Pauline and Nadine Ball, Nadine and J.L. Graves, Calvin and Bobbie Curtis, Wayne, Mary Frances and Lavinia Bookout, Everett and Raymond Reynolds, Frances Graue, Ruth Cosand, Helen Combs, Maxine Counts, Marjorie Combs, Floyd Sutton, Ether Dennis, Dean Kelly, Junior Lee Wilkerson, and David Williams, all of this place. Katherine Morton of Shady Grove, Howard and Roy Lee Shumate and Coy Durning of Fayetteville. All spent a very enjoyable evening.
Mr. and Mrs. Sim Luper have announced the marriage of their son, Lynn James to Miss Ina May Hughes of Stony Point. The wedding was an event of Saturday, Nov. 15 at Fayetteville with R.F. Jackson officiating. We wish them a long and happy wedded life.

July 29 - Mr. and Mrs. Ross Cox and daughter, Wilma Jean of Tulsa, spent Saturday night and Sunday with the latter's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Sim Luper.
We are sorry to hear of the illness of the baby of Mr. and Mrs. Bailey of Alma. Mrs. Bailey's sister, Bonnie Hanks, has been called to be at the child's bedside.
Luther Stamper has just completed a new barn on his place.
Mrs. Spurlock of Japton is visiting her son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Dave Spurlock.

The fine rain here last week broke the drought in this section.
Mr. and Mrs. Ward Graue have gone to St. Louis. En route they will stop at Houston, Mo., to visit the latter's cousins.
The many friends of Mrs. Clyde Wickware will be glad to know she has been brought home from the city hospital where she underwent an operation last week.
Several from here attended the all day services held at the Church of Christ at Ball Creek, Sunday.
We are glad that Jack Gladden was able to be returned here from Texas. He was in a car wreck there about two weeks ago and received a broken leg.
Mr. and Mrs. Hoyt Combs and children spent the week-end at Berryville and Green Forest visiting relatives and attending the annual reunion held there.
Mr. and Mrs. Harry Wilkerson made a business trip to Kansas City, last week.

Jan. 6 - Ruth Cosand has been visiting her brother and sister-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Guy Cosand at Diamond, Mo.
The Johnson Owls basketball team entered the tournament at Summers and won second place. They were awarded a trophy.
Mr. and Mrs. Virgil White have moved to the H.O. Davis farm.
The high school students here resumed their studies Monday morning at University training school after a two weeks' Christmas vacation.
Miss Emma Jane Hill spent the New Year's holiday with Maxine Parmer of Newport, Ark.
Mr. and Mrs. Elwood Tucker, who have been visiting relatives here returned to California.
Mrs. Ross Cox and daughter Wilma Jean of Tulsa spent Saturday and Sunday with her mother, Mrs. Sim Luper.
Bad weather caused a decrease in Sunday school attendance Sunday.
Mr. and Mrs. George Masterson and children of Delano, California have been visiting Mr. and Mrs. Washington Reynolds.
We are sorry to hear that Mr. Clarence Cosand has been ill.
Funeral services for Burl M. Hanks, 32 years old, who was killed in a train accident at Barstow, Calif., were held Saturday at the chapel of the Callison and Riggs Funeral home at Springdale. It was conducted by rev. Emmett Davison, pastor of the First Christian church of Rogers. Burial was in the Stuckey cemetery near here.
Mr. Hanks is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. N.V. Hanks of this place, four sisters, Miss Bonnie Hanks of the home, Mrs. E.I. Bailey, Jr., of Alma, Mrs. Tom Farrish of Lowell and Mrs. Lester Elliott of Mount Comfort; an uncle Marion Mason of the home; three nieces and four nephews.
Mr. and Mrs. Arles Dixon and daughters visited Sunday afternoon in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Edgar Bookout.
Mr. and Mrs. Ed Boatright and children have moved to Salem.

Mrs. Cora Bookout has returned from a week's visit with her husband's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ed Bookout, at Hulbert, Okla. While there she helped take care of Mr. Bookout, who has been seriously ill for some time. He is improved this week. We wish for him a speedy recovery.
Mr. and Mrs. Charlie Ball of Japton spent Sunday with Mr. and Mrs. Hosea Ball.
Mrs. Clifie Combs, who has been a patient at the Springdale Memorial Hospital for several days, has been returned to her home. We miss her in the place of business at the Combs Grocery.
Mr. and Mrs. Al Luper are having a new well drilled.
We are sorry to hear that Mr. Lenke is a patient at a hospital in Kansas.
The WMU held a luncheon at the Baptist Church last Friday.

Harvel Clark of Farmington and Miss Hazel Johnson of Johnson were married May 21 by Fred Brooks, justice of the peace.

Mrs. Fanny Reed - Springdale, Ark. (Special) - Word has been received by relatives here of the death of Mrs. Fanny Reed, 60 years old, Tuesday at a hospital at Sedro Wooley, Wash. She was born at Johnson, Ark., south of Springdale, July 17, 1887. She went to the state of Washington in 1912.

April 1 - Miss Ina Mae Johnson has been selected valedictorian for the eighth grade graduating class. Alice Faye Cardwell is the salutatorian. Miss Johnson has not missed a day of school since starting in the first grade.
Mr. and Mrs. Monroe Neal entertained a group of friends Saturday night at their home. Those present were Mr. and Mrs. Garr, Mr. and Mrs. Clifford Neal, Maxine Counts, Mayme and Mabel Simpson, Leo and Lerrie Ball, Loretta Hughes and Earl Bookout.
Mrs. Lydia Trollinger and son, Joe of Fayetteville, spent the week-end with friends here.
Mr. and Mrs. Tilbert Counts and children, Wayne, Maxine, Iline, and Janive spent Sunday in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Hosea Ball.
The fifth Sunday service was held at the school house Sunday. Rev. sj.S. Blystone preached at 11:00 o'clock. Dinner was served at the noon hour. Dr. Whitington preached in the afternoon with special music by the male quartet from Springdale Baptist church.
Ethel Jean Smith and Velda Phipps spent Sunday with Bonnie and Frances Wilkerson.
Mr. and Mrs. Loye Luper and children, Janet and Donnie, who are now living at Harrison spent the week-end here with relatives.
The Johnson grade school sold candy and popcorn Friday night at the school house. A program of "tell the truth or consequences" was given over the make believe station OWL and a reward of a small sack of lime was given each contestant. Music was furnished by Elmer Boatright and Ether Dennis. The proceeds were for the school.
Next Friday night, April 4, a Negro minstrel will be given by the school. A small admission will be charged, the proceeds to go for the expense of the graduating class. Everyone come and help them out.
Everett and Raymond Reynolds, Nolen Webb, Irvin Rothrock and Wayne Bookout attended the band concert at the University Field house Thursday night.
James L. Neal of Springdale preached at the church house Sunday night. His sermon was enjoyed by all.
The Johnson grade school was among the many that participated in the music festival at the University Friday afternoon.
The Sunshine colub will meet this Thursday with Mrs. Thomas Rothrock, when she will be assisted as hostess by Mrs. Bryan Curtis.
A group of women met Thursday at the home of Mrs. Joe Woods and spent the day quilting.
