Shady Grove Baptist Church of Christ

The Shade Grove Baptist church was form in 1880 and a lot of Johnson, Arkansas, families attended this church. The church is not longer standing, but the cemetery is still there, now inside Springdale's city limits.--CMD

On the 10th of July 1880, the following persons met at Vernon School house to organize themselves into a Baptist Church to be known as the Shady Grove Baptist Church: Lucinda Vernon, Nancy Vernon, Martha Vernon, Sarah Vernon, James Vernon, J.B. Vernon, Mary Vernon, N.E. Pierce, L.B. Hughes, Nancy McCamey.

A council from the following churches assisted: Mount Vernon, Center Point, Valley Grove. After due process the council recognized the Shady Grove Church as a Regular Baptist Church. Elder A. Huckelbe was moderator, James Hood, clerk.

The second Lord's Day in July: Elizabeth Roper received by relation.

August: L.B. Hughes, James Vernon, N.P. Thurmond elected to represent the Church in the Bentonville Association, with J.B. Vernon and D.L. Purdue as alternates.

September: S.D. Timmons and Nancy Phillips received by baptism.

October: Margaret Hughes received by relation.

December: A Sister excluded for unChristian conduct.

1881

Saturday before the second Lord's Day in April: L.B. Hughes and N.P. Thurmond elected as deacons to be ordained in May. John Vernon elected permanent clerk. Marinda Dority and Neomah Dority received by relation.

May: James and Mary Wickwire received by letter.

June: Thomas and Palmire Graves and their two daughters, Mary and Luvina, received by letter.

August: L.D. Purdue elected permanent clerk, with L.B. Hughes as assistant. L.B. Hughes, Thomas Graves, John Vernon elected delegates to the Association, with N.P. Thurmond as alternate.

September: Elder W.F. Green chosen pastor for the ensuing year.

October: Elizabeth Mason and Martha Mills received by relation.

1882

Saturday before the second Lord's Day in April: Theodosia Henry received by letter.

June: L.B. Hughes, J.B. Vernon, Samuel Cox, Lucinda Vernon, Elizabeth Johnson, Elizabeth Mason selected as a committee to collect means to build a churchhouse.

September: James Vernon elected clerk. W.F. Green reelected pastor.

1883

1886

Saturday before the second Sunday in March: Brothers Eli and Wrily McGehee granted letters of dismission. Sarah Bradley joined by relation.

August: A Sister excluded for favoring another church and another Sister excluded for dancing. J.H. Boswell, E.F. Bookout, J.B. Vernon chosen as delegates to the Association.

September: The Church wishing to be represented in the Fayetteville Association chose G.W. Brooks, J.C. Vernon, S.H. McGlothlin as delegates.

November: L.B. Hghes, G.W. Brooks, J.H. Boswell, S.H. McGlothlin were appointed to call on those staying away from Church.

December: Elizabeth Johnson granted a letter of dismission.

1887

January: A meeting held at Stony Point School in the interest of Shady Grove Church. John Mason and Sister R.J. Johnson received by relation. Edna Johnson, Catherine Johnson, Josephine Wages, Eliza Wages, Ellen Wages, Alice Cottrell, Netty Cox, Joseph Dunagan, Sarah Dunagan, John Busey, Emily Wickwire received by baptism.

Meeting held at Shady Grove Church. C.W. Solomon, Ella Shepard Joined by baptism. C.E. Oliphant granted letter of dismission.

February: David McKennon, A.B. Henson, Effie Bookout received by baptism. Elder G.P. Hanks called as pastor and $86.55 subscribed to pay him for the ensuing year. J.B. Vernon elected treasurer. The pastor if called for one third time and is to give one third of that time to the Mission at Stony Point. The meeting time for the Shady Grove Church was changed to the 3rd Sunday and the Saturday before.

(The following was written on a loose leaf of paper, with the writer's name not given.) Elders M. Slaughter and G.P. Hanks commenced a series of meetings on the night of the 30 January 1887. On February 1, Sunday night, A.B. Henson gave his heart to Jesus. How do I know! I was sitting by him with my arm over his shoulder when he saw the light. Here are his first words, "George, I see the light." He and I got up and went to the preacher. We have been most of the time in the same class since and on the same side of the theme, whatever it might be.

David Bridenthal, J.C. Lichlyter, A.B. Henson, S.H. McClothlin, G.W. Brooks appointed to find a suitable location for the building of a churchhouse.

April: Martha Suttle, Martha Powell joined by baptism. Land offered by John Lichlyter accepted as a site for the churchhouse. David Bridenthal, S.H. McGlothlin, J.B. Vernon appointed to draw up plans.

May: Joseph and Sarah Dunagan granted letters of dismission. Maud Henson joined by letter. Building committee recommended churchouse 30 by 40 feet and 14 feet high. S.H. McGlothlin, C.W. Solomon, P.T. Rose appointed to raise a building fund.

June: A.J. and Sarah Wages joined by letter.

July: Sarah Brooks granted a letter of dismission. L.B. Hughes, A.B. Henson, J.B. Vernon elected trustees of the Church. David Bridenthal, James Solomon, S.H. McGlothlin, A.B. Henson, G.W. Brooks appointed as a new building committee.

August: John and Lydia Henson granted letters of dismission. David Bridenthal, S.H. McGlothlin, D.W. Solomon appointed messengers to the Fayetteville Association.

September: A.C. and Sarah Wages, A.J. Wages, Josephine and Eliza and Ellen Wages, John Busey, Martha Powell granted letters of dismission for the purpose of organizing a Baptist Church at Sycamore Springs.

November: Fannie Lichlyter, Hattie Solomon, Betty Bradley, Edna Johnson appointed as a committee to raise money for missions.

1888

Saturday before the third Sunday in January: James and Sister Vernon granted letters of dismission.

February: Meeting at the Stony Point Mission. Martha Gault, F.M. Fear, Joseph Burnett, Jane Burnett received by letter. Received by bpatism: John Snyder, Mary Burnett, Susan Thurman, Ella Thurman, Ida Thurman, Amanda Maxey, Irwin Wickwire, Florence Simpkins, George Austin, Eliza Luper, Hannah Daniels, American Daniels, James Simpkins, John Luper, James Luper, Louisa Luper, Thomas Luper. March: Elder I.R. Hall elected pastor with a salary of $30 per yar plus travel expenses to and from the Church. Meeting time changed to first Sunday. E.F. Bookout elected trustee.

May: David Bridnethal and J.C. Lichlyter elected deacons. Artelia Bridenthal received by letter.

June: G.W. Brooks elected clerk. J.B. Bernon, Jesse Bradley, J.C. Lichlyter appointed to seat the churchhouse.

August: Alice Cottrell granted letter of dismission.

October: S.H. McGlothlin and Sisters H.F. and R.B. McGlothlin granted letters of dismission. J.H. Lichlyeter, Jesse Bradley, J.B. Vernon chosen as delegates to the Association.

November: James Ballew joined by letter. Betty Bookout granted a letter of dismission.

1889

Saturday before the first Sunday in January: Brother J.T. Smith elected pastor. Committee appointed to visit members who are hnot attending.

March: D.F. [or E.F.--CMD] McKinnon, Nancy McKinnon and Sister E. Roper granted letters of dismission.

April: Maty Thurston, Mauda Solomon, Fanny Lichlyter appointed to look after missions.

August: Nancy McCamey granted a letter of dismission. A committee appointed to visit disorderly members.

September: J.C. Lichlyter, J.H. Boswell, G.W. Brooks appointed to represent the Church in the Association which meets with Little Elm Church.

August: J.B. Vernon and Sister J. Fitzgerald granted letters of dismission.

October: Protracted meeting with 12 addition: two by letter, 10 by baptism. Received Nany Vaughn, Rosey Phillips, Newton Cotrum, Carry Bookout, Sarah Bradley, Mary Francisco, Charles Lenox, Jessy Nail, Elmer Rice, Nancy White, Rebecca Lenox, Margaret Graham.

1891

Saturday before the first Sunday in January: A Brother excluded for unChristian conduct; a Sister forgiven for same.

February: Sisters L.A. Vernon and Mary Holland granted letters of dismission.

May: A Brother asked for his letter so he could stay at home. Letter refused.J.H. Lichlyter appointed to keep the churchhouse locked.

September: Two Brothers who had been ina fuss made peace with each other and the Church.

1892

Saturday before the first Sunday in February: Nine members who had been in a play-party asked forgiveness and received it.

August: Brother R. Ballew and wife and 3 daughters received by letter.

October: G.W. Brooks, J.B. Vernon, David Bridenthal elected delegates to the Association. In case the Association undertakes to review the actions of this Church, the delegates are to leave that body.

1893

Saturday before the first Sunday in February: Brother O.D. Slaughter called as pastor.

March: Meeting changed to the 3rd Sunday in each month and Saturday before. Laura Sills granted letter of dismission.

May: Amanda Solomon granted a letter of dismission.

July: Sister Basket received by letter; by baptism, Dora Lichlyter, Minta Lichlyter, Mira Groves, Nora Brooks.

August: Clarence Fugate received by baptism.

September: G.W. Brooks, William Lichlyter, J.H. Lichlyter appointed as messengers to the Association.

October: Harriet Davis granted a letter of dismission.

November: The church decided it could not nothing about Associational missions at present, as it was behind with the pastor's salary.

1894

Saturday before the third Sunday in May: Sister S.E. Brooks and daughter Nora Brooks granted letters of dismission.

September: G.W. Brooks, J.H. Lichlyter, A.B. Henson appointed as messengers to the Association.

November: Brother J.H. Amacker chosen pastor. Meeting changed from 3rd to 1st Sunday.

1895

Saturday before the first Sunday in February: Brother J. Amacker and wife and son, D.H., and daughter Leoti, received by letter.

September: Arta Bridenthal, Delila Peerson granted letters of dismission. G.W. Brooks, J.H. Amacker appointed as messengers to the Assocation to meet at Elm Springs.

October: Elder G.P. Hanks elected pastor. E.F. Rice and E.F. Bookout elected deacons.

1896

August: The pastor being absent Brother A.H. utery of Springdale occupied the stand.

June: A new roof in the churchhouse cost $52.50.

Saturday before the fourth Sunday in September: John Lichlyter, W.M. Lichlyter, G.W. Brooks elected as delegates to the Fayetteville Baptist Association to meet with the First Missionary Baptist Church of Springdale. Membership this year 120. Pastor, J.W. Crawford of Prairie Grove.

November: Annie and Callie Rose, and Nancy Boswell granted letters of dismission.

December: L.L. Johnson, Missionary, commenced a meeting. Received by relation, Mary Cate: by baptism, W.H. March: J.F. Lichlyter elected assistant clerk. By vote of the Church the clerk was ordered to drop all names from the roll who are not attending.

April: A brother exluded for heresy. Mamie BUrnett McMurtry granted a letter of dismission.

June: William Lichlyter, F.A. Graue, Lee Warren elected delegates to the Association, with John Lichlyter and Zan Henson as alternates.

July: A Sister excluded for heresy. Brother Amacker and family granted letters of recommendation.

August: Ellery Brooks elected clerk. John Brown elected pastor.

September: Walter Mullins and wife, and Ellen Barnette granted letters of dismission.

October: Sister L.J. Burnette received by letter; Willis Cullender and Mollie Cullender by baptism.

November: Brother Lee Warren was licensed to preach.

December: J.J. Warren was recognized as a deacon and F.A. Graue was elected a deacon. Held a protracted meeting. Rhoda Whittemore received by letter. Elbert Napier, Nellie Cawthon, Albert Whittemore, Henry Cawthon, Bob Riggans, Arthur Langford received by baptism.

1909

August: John King elected pastor.

October: A Sister excluded for heresy. Protracted meeting. William Basket, Albert Farr, Lottie Hepler received by baptism. Howard Hepler, Rubie Hepler, Lily Hepler received by letter.

November: Steel Warren, J.J. Warren and wife granted letters of dismission.

December: Letters of dismission granted to Henry Cawthon, Ras Ivey, Josie Ivey, Garland Ivey, John Warren, Lee Warren, Elliott Warren, Ben Warren, Jim Warren, Clifford Routh, Bell Routh, Cary Cate, William Cullender, Will Riggans, C.J. Mahan, Mary Mahan for the purpose of organizing themselves into a church at Zion. Voted to change the meting days to the first Sunday and the Saturday before. Membership this year, 99. 1910

March: F.A. Graue and wife, Gertie Ivey granted leters of dismission.

April: R. Ballew, Lyn Ivey, and wife, Malinda Millikan, Bernice Millikan granted letters of dismission. Sam Morton and Malcolm Henson appointed to look after the finances of the Church.

May: W.H. Graue and wife granted leters of dismission.

June: Zan Henson and Sam Morton elected trustees of the cemetery.

August: Lizzie Graham, J.B. Vernon and wife granted letters of dismission. Malcom Henson, Sam Morton, George Brooks elected as delegates to the Fayetteville Association to meet with the Old Baptist Mission Missionary Baptist Church at Westville, Okla. Zan Henson, Ellery Brooks elected alternates. A.B. Henson, Hugh Lichlyter, Ellery Brooks elected to look out for a pastor for next Associational year. Elder John Hamby elected pastor.

Membership this year 65. Died, J.H. Lichlyter, Catherine Ramey. This year we have lettered out 31 members who have oganized themselves into the Oakland Missionary Baptist church.

December: Protracted meeting. J.B. Smith, J.N. B. Hepler received by letter. America Basket, Lucie Dill, Sophie Bookout, Ottie Luper, Ephraim Dassey received by baptism.

1911

June: E.W. Brooks resigned as clerk and J.F. Lichlyter was chosen in his place. A.B. Henson, Mrs. J. Cawthorn, Mrs. Fannie Skillern appointed by pastor to look after the welfare of visitors.

July: A.B. Henson, Leo Cawthon, James Luper were elected delegates to the Association; with E.W. Brooks and J.F. Lichlyter as alternates. Association to meet with the Little Elm Church.

September: Mrs. J.F. Lichlyter received by letter. Elder D.L. Hood elected pastor. The hours of conference changed from night to half past two in the afternoon.

November: J.F. Lichlyter resigned as Church Clerk and G.W. Brooks elected to take his place.

December: A Sister excluded for heresy. Annie Luper received by baptism. Membership this year 71. Died, Mrs. L.A. Lichlyter. Used American Baptist Literature in Sunday School. W.F. Bunottom S.S. superintendent.

1912

Saturday before the 4th Sunday in January: By vote the Church esptablished a mission at Johnson Schoolhouse.

May: T.L. Whitehead received by letter.

1924

November: The following pastors and brethren held a protracted meeting: J.A. Williams, A. Newton, E.F. Rice, O. L. Lierly, H.E. Plumlee, F.A. Graue. The old Church was revived to the extend of electing a pastor, H.E. Plumlee. There will be services 3 Sundays a month.

--oo-- Insofar as records are available, a brief history of the Shady Grove Baptist Church of Christ is now complete. The church itself was located 3 miles south of Springdale and just west of Highway 71. The building is no longer there, but a well-filled cemetery marks the site.
