St Breward, or Simonward, is a village and large Parish situated between the rivers Jump, Camel and De Lank,7 miles north from Bodmin,5 south from Camelford, and 10 north-by-west from the Bodmin Road station, on the Cornwall railway, in the Eastern division of the county, hundred of Trigg, Camelford union and county court district, rural deanery of Trigg Minor, archdeaconry of Bodmin, and diocese of Truro. The church of St Breward, founded by William Brewer, bishop of Exeter (1224-450, is a building of stone, in the Early English style and consists of chancel, nave, south aisle, north transept, south porch and a tower containing 4 bells :there are sittings for 300 persons: it was thoroughly restored in 1865 by subscription. The register dates from about the year 1513. The living is a vicarage, yearly value from tithe rent-charge £ 290, net income £ 288 with residence and 71 acres of glebe, in the gift of the Dean and Chapter of Exeter and held since 1882 by the Rev James Arthur Kempe M.A.of Christ's College, Cambridge. The Wesleyans and Bible Christians have a chapel here.
The highest mountains in the county, Brown Willy (1,368 feet) and Rough Tor (pronounced "Rowtor") (1,296 feet), are in this parish. In a sequested valley is an ancient well; the structure is dilapidated, but the arched entrance remains, and there are remains near of some ecclesiastical buildings. Sir William Wallace Rhoderic Onslow bart, J.P., D.L is lord of the manor. The principal landowners are Lord Robartes, Captain John Morshead, Captain Cyril Dudley Fortescue and William Henry Pole-Carew esq J.P.,D.L.
The soil is various ; subsoil, granite. The chief crops are wheat and barley. The area is 9,237 acre: rateable value, £2,974: and the population in 1881 was 728.
Keybridge, 2 ½ miles south, situate on the river De Lank:
Higher Lank, 1 ½ south; Lower Lank, 2 south; Penpont, 2¼ south; Penquite, 1 south and Swallock,1 north-east, are hamlets.
