                                  Ethel (Hansen)  & Porter Hall

( 1911 - 2005 )

Ethel Elizabeth was the first child of Anna Hansen before her marriage born April 22nd, 1911.   I do not know the specifics whether Anna's future husband Joe Kuper was the father or not. Speculation amongst family members whom I spoke with is that it is a  strong probability.

Ethel attended the Hansen farmhouse school with her aunt, Elizabeth.  Her teacher stands behind her.  The other girl is unknown.

Grandma Ida spoke highly of Ethel.  She felt very close to her as she stayed on grandma & grandpa's farm for about a year or longer.  Grandma did not get specific but said she was there "to protect her."  One can draw their own conclusions from family rumors.  They went together often on trips after and even before Porter died.  I remember going with Grandma on a visit to Ethel's house once.  Of course, I was a junior high school kid and was only along to keep Grandma company on the journey.

This was Ethel and Porter's house in Pierre, South Dakota.  It was a very neat and functional home.  Ethel and Porter did not have any children so she had lots of time to spend with folks of her choice.  I remember coming to this house and trying to be very polite.  Ethel was proud to point out to me that if one looked through her kitchen window you could see the capital building's dome.

Ethel died New Years Day, in 2005,  94 years of age.  She is buried in the Prairie Cemetery at Orient, South Dakota near Halbert and Leah Hansen's graves  and above Porter's grave.  Porter is buried beside his first wife, Stella who died in 1936.

Ethel's grave is at the top of the photo.  The cemetery folks had put on new dirt from the settling.  Porter and his first wife Stella are in the lower portion of photo.
