                                                                  "Dad's Gift to Me"

I did not know what to title this page about my father.  It was not meant that I cherish this gift more or it is worth more then what Dad gave to me.  Mostly, I like the photographs and it brings fond memories.  As I became older I kept asking Dad the specifics about the house I grew up in, located in Faulkton.  It was my intention to build a model of that house.  So, I would ask the dimensions and try to figure out a scale.  However, due to my procrastination I never even began that project.  As time progressed I knew Dad was doing all sorts of woodworking projects in his shop, and I hinted about making a model of my boyhood home.  But, it was soon forgotten.  Then on one visit to Winner my father surprised me with a model of my boyhood home.  He had it to scale, electrified it, painted it, build furniture and it was to a scale that was impressive.  I cherish that model not only for the memories of the home, but that it was a special gift to me by my father.  Dad sure was a man of many talents.

This is the first house (built in 1925 ) my father purchased, coming along with the farm which was just west of his parent's, south west of Faulkton.  It was moved into the town of Faulkton circa 1952.  When my father sold this house in 1973 he received only $16,000 for it.  Shocking price today and almost back then.  It was a 5 bedroom house with remodeled kitchen and updating throughout.  The last time I was in it was when I returned from living in Vienna, Austria in the late spring of 1974.  My personal possessions were in one of the upstairs bedrooms and it was in the contract that they could remain until my return.

The house has been extensively remodeled since then by the owner, Dale Cunningham.  He graduated ahead of me and is a teacher in the Faukton High School.  I chose not to go back, however my father felt it was progress and was eager to see the changes.  He did go through the house and was very pleased and content with the changes Dale had done.  It now shelters a new family giving them their own memories.  It would certainly go for more then $16,000 today.  The front looks similar to the way my father had it in the late 60's except for the double attached garage now built to it's west.
