John Good, Jr. was born in Bucks Co. , PA. where his birth and baptisim are recorded in the Nockamixon Church records. The sponsors are Henry and Catherine Good, who were the grandparents.
born 1808 Apl. 16 - John parents John Guth & Regina sponsors Henry Guth & Catherine
John was married twice and was the father of 13 children. His first wife was Barbara Grover (Gruver), whom he married 28 Nov 1831. Barbara died March 11, 1846. He married again by 1850 to Rachael Lockard Good,
John Good, Jr. was 63 years old when he died in 1871. His second wife Rachel preceded him in death in the year 1869 at the age of 45. Their deaths left several young children orphaned who were taken in by various relatives, as indicated on the 1870 Census. Church records for births of some of his children have been located in the church records of the Evangelical Lutheran and Reformed Congregation of Mount Bethel Township, Northampton Co., Pennsylvania. These records include Rebecca, Ruben, Jeremiah, and William. The family may have joined the Methodists about the time of Henry's birth and those records still need to be located. Arvilla Stevens gave me the following list which she reports was written by Henry Good, her grandfather and the son of John and Barbara Gruver Good.
Margret An born Aug. the 20 1832 Elizabeth born Nov. the 4 1833 Ruben James born Sept. the 4 1835 James Jefferson born Feb. the 14 1837 William Good born May the 26 1839 Henry born July the 28 1841 Caroline born Aug. the 4 1843 John born Feb. the 26 1846 Emma born Feb. the 28 1851 Josiah born Feb. the 20 1853 Enos born June the 3 1855 Sarah Manerva born Dec. the 15 1856 George Raymon born Sept. the 18 1859
Barbara Grover (Gruver) was the first wife of John Good . They were married November 28, 1831 and their first child, Rebecca Ann, was born Aug.20, 1832. Jordan reference gives her maiden name as Grover, however her baptism record recorded in the church records of the Evangelical Lutheran and Reformed Congregation of Mount Bethel Township, Northampton Co., Pennsylvania, page 96 states:
Barbara, born Aug. 17, 1808 baptized Sept. 18, 1808 parents Johannes Gruber & Margareth sponsors Franz Hauck and Barbara Gruber
In addition, Elwood Good in his rendition of the Good family history in 1972 noted that Barbara was the daughter of John Gruver and his wife Margaret Houck. Elwood also notes that John Gruver was the son of William Gruver. Comparing notes in the Brodt family history 18 on page 9 of that work it is mentioned that Maria Barbara Brodt, the widow of Paul Brodt married Wm. Gruver and had a son John who married Margaret Houck.
Grover / Gruber/ and GRUVER, the preferred spelling today; the first could be the English spelling of this name and the other could be the German spelling. We see the same thing with the spelling of the name Good. The German spellings have been found recorded as "GUT" and "GUTH".
Barbara Gruver is buried at Three Church Hill cemetery near Martins Creek, PA. Her tombstone was inscribed with; " Barbara Good, Wf of John Good, Jr., died Mar. 11, 1846, aged 37 years, 6 mo., 24 days". This inscription allows us to calculate her birthdate of August 18, 1808 and confirm the birth registry listed above.
Since her last child, John, is 4 years old in 1850 and she died in 1846, it is very likely that she died as a result of his birth. Barbara and John were the parents of Elizabeth 17, Ruben 15, Jeremiah 13, William 11, HENRY 8 (whose descendants will be listed in this document), Caroline 6, and John 4, as they are listed according to their ages on the 1850 Census for Lower Mt. Bethel Township, Northampton Co., PA, # 416 / 446 . (her first born child, Rebecca Ann, born Aug.20, 1832 and listed as Margaret Ann on the list writen by Henry and given to me by Aunt Arvilla is not on this census. She may have been married by this time.)
He married again by 1850 , as his second wife, Rachael Lockard Good, is listed on the 1850 Census. This copied from the Easton Argus, dated Wednesday, July 12, 1848. "Married by Rev. P. S. Schory at his residence near Richmond, Mr. John Good Jr. and Miss Rachael Lockard both of Lower Mt. Bethel Twp."
Children of this marriage and their ages on the 1860 Census for Lower Mt. Bethel twp., Northampton Co., PA # 1215 / 1245, are Emma 9, Josiah 7, Enos 5, Sarah M. 3, and George 10 months.
By 1870 Rachael had died and John, Jr. is found living with his son Henry as noted on the 1870 Census for Lower Mt. Bethel twp., Northampton Co., PA. John, Jr. died in 1871. John and Rachael Good are buried at the Miller Cemetery on Heinsone Rd., Bangor,PA. This is the location of the old German Methodist Church, no longer in existence.
Their tombstones are inscribed:
John Good Rachael his wife b. April 16, 1808 b. Sept. 14, 1824 d. Nov. 10, 1871 d. Jul. 7, 1869
John Good, Jr. was 63 years old when he died in 1871. His wife Rachel preceded him in death in the year 1869 at the age of 45. Their deaths left several young children who were taken in by various relatives, as indicated on the 1870 Census.
