                                    Charles Kunkle (1825 - 1890)

                                   Son of George(1797-1876) and Salome (1803- 1825) Kunkle

Charles Kunkle was the third child of his parents, George and Salome Kunkle. Charles was born November 24, 1825 and his mother Salome Knecht Kunkle died soon after his birth. Salomes gravestone is located at the Moorestown Cemetery in the old yard at Salem Church, Northampton Co., Pa. It is a flat white stone with her name clearly and easily read. It stood as a beacon with the sun glistening off of it among a field of beautiful pink flowers on the spring day when I visited the cemetery. Salome was only 22 and a half years old when she died December 16, 1825, just three weeks after the birth of her son Charles. She was the mother of three children, Lea born Dec. 17, 1822, Catherine born Oct. 8, 1824 and Charles.  In his will, 1836, Leonard Knecht, the father of Salome states, "daughter, Salome who had been intermarried with George Kunkle who since departed her life, her share I give and bequeth unto her two children, Charles and Catherine."

Other Kunkles in the Moorestown Cemetery include;

George , 1797- 1876, age 69, and Elizabeth, 1803 - 1872, age 69.  Elizabeth Remelich (Remaly), was the second wife of George and the mother who raised Charles. Their marriage record is listed in Church records of Lehigh Co., Marriages by Rev. William Mendsen, Lutheran Pastor. page 17. The entry lists George and Elizabeth Remelich, Nov. 5 1826. She was the daughter of John Remely (d 1825, Bushkill Twp) and Maria Catharina Bender (1780-1858).

Charles and his wife Emaline Kunkle are also buried in the Salem Union Church Cemetery, Moore Township in Northampton Co. Pennsylvania.

The record lists:

Kunkle, Charles, born 1825, died 1890, age 65.

Kunkle, Emaline, born 1828, died 1883, age 55.

Charles Kunkle was born on November 24, 1825 in Moore township, Northampton Co., Pennsylvania. He was baptised on December 18, 1825 by Rev. Mendsen of the Salem Lutheran/ Reformed Church, which was likely the day his mother was buried. Little is known about his childhood. His father George Kunkle, widowed when Charles was only three weeks old, with three babies to raise, soon remarried to Elizabeth.

Charles and Emaline Miller were married on June 27, 1847 at Salem Union Church, Moore Twp., Northampton Co., PA. They became the parents of eight children, Fayella, b. Andrew G. and Sarah A. never appeared on a census record. A child named Henrich George, born March 29, 1851 is also in the church record. Fayetta, John Henry, Cyrus and Thomas lived to adulthood.

She died at age 55 on May 19, 1883. Her death record in the Salem Church Records, provides her maiden name, as well as the date of her marriage to John Kunkle. "Kunkle, Emaline, daughter of John and Julian Miller, married July 27, 1847 to Charles Kunkle, was born May 16, 1828, died May 19, 1883, age 55 years and 3 days."
