Wm. "Homer" McEwen was born and raised and raised his family on the same property that has been the family farm since William and Sarah bought it from Sarah's parents about 1872. He was the son of Henry and Clara Illick McEwen. Homer was a farmer all of his life. In the begining he raised Ayshires, but now Holstines are the dairy breed preferred. They also had chickens and took the eggs to the auction in Hackettstown once a week. Crops were hay, wheat and corn. The farm was given the name Maple Hedge Farm about 1920, when Eliza determined that a good name was needed. She told me she came up with the name because there was a hedge of boxwood along the road and driveway and there were many large maple trees in the yard. He bought his first automobile about 1919, a Model T Ford. He was the first McEwen to learn to drive a car. Farm machinery was added to the operation during his lifetime. Homer was the only child of his parents, like his father and grandfather before him. His children, Lois, Homer Jr. and Howard were the first set of siblings on the farm, and their children were the first McEwen cousins.

3 Sarah "Eliza" Long. Born 24 Mar 1898 in Spring City, PA. Died 9 May 1987 in Columbus, OH. Buried in Richmond Meth. Church Cem.,Richmond, PA. Education East Stroudsburg Normal School.

Eliza was the daughter of Rev. Howard H. and Ella Mae Heffner Long, he being the Reformed minister at Stone Church, where the family had lived from 1903 until 1918. She met her future husband in the area sometime before her father was sent to York PA to serve a church down there. After completing grammar school, Eliza attended "Normal" School at what is now East Stroudsburg University. At age 20, she had completed her education and accepted a teaching position in York PA. She married Homer on Aug. 5, 1920 in Red Lion PA. After a honeymoon trip to Niagara Falls, they returned to Richmond to begin their married life. Eliza moved into the large double farmhouse shared by Henry and Clara McEwen, who lived on the Rt. 611 side of the house. Homer and Eliza remodeled the other side of the house, which had been the original structure, adding a new kitchen. Her home was always a heaven for elder family members. Eliza played the role of care giver for her parents and in-laws as well as for Clara's sisters, Laura and Sally, who came to live at the farm during their retirement years. As a result many of their possessions ended up in the McEwen attic. "Liza" McEwen loved music and played the piano and organ for the Richmond Methodist church for many years. She was a Sunday School teacher most of her life. She is remembered for her devotion to her family and the bountiful table she prepared. She was an excellent cook who served dinner at noon and supper for the evening meal, both meals being hardy fare for her farm family and anyone else who stopped in. She could always be found in her kitchen where there was always room at her table for unexpected guests. Like so many farm wives, she spent her days in the summer mouths preserving fruits and vegetables for the winter meals.

Second Generation

4 Henry McEwen. Born 14 May 1856 in Richmond, PA. Died 19 Aug 1946 in Richmond, PA. Buried in Richmond Meth. Church Cem.,Richmond, PA. He was a farmer. He married Clara Illick, 25 Dec 1878 in Richmond, PA.

Henry McEwen was the only son of William and Sarah Rasley McEwen. He was born on the farm that his parents had taken over from his mother's parents, the Rasleys. Named for his Grandfather, Henry Rasley, our Henry engaged in truck farming and continued to nurture the land as his ancestors had done. His farm produced vegetables, potatoes, strawberries, and eggs as well as milk. He raised red and white cows, Ayrshires. His fields were plowed by teams of horses. And he rode to church in a Sherry with fringe on top. He was civic minded, participating in township government and was active on the school board. He and Clara belonged to the Methodist Church where they both took an active part in the affairs of the church.

5 Clara Illick. Born 15 Sep 1859 in Richmond, PA. Died 20 Feb 1942 in Richmond PA. Buried in Richmond Meth. Church Cem.,Richmond, PA.

Clara's name at birth was Clarrissa Matilda Illick, daughter of Sam and Henrietta Illick, but she was always known as "Clara". When I was searching in the McEwen attic for research data, I found the Illick family Bible which contained entries for all the children of Samuel and Henrietta Illick. The place where Grandmother's name should have been recorded was neatly torn out of the Bible and penciled in was the notation "Clara". Later in the personal Bible of Clara McEwen, I found that little torn out corner and was able to make a perfect match to the place with the missing corner in the Illick Bible. Evidently she did not like her given name and took it upon herself to remove the entry from her father's Bible, however she could not throw that special piece of paper away, for she placed it in her own Bible. She was the mother of two children; the first, born in 1882 only lived a few weeks. In 1895 her second son, Wm. Homer was born. Clara was 36 years old and Henry was 39 when they finally became parents after 17 years of marriage.

Buried in Three Church Hill Cem.,L.Mt.Bethel Twp.,Northampton Co.PA. Occupation Minister, Reformed Church. Education Ursinis College, Collegeville, PA. He married Ella Mae Heffner, 28 Mar 1898.

Rev. Long was a minister in the Reformed Church in PA. Beginning in 1897, he was the Pastor of churches in Spring City at St. Vincent Reformed Church in Chester Co., Stone Church, Red Lion and Evans City. He grew up in Williams twp., just below Easton, PA. His parents' home was on Bouger Hill Rd. and one day when my Grandmother and I were riding through the area, Gram said "Stop, this is the place where my Grandparents lived." To my amazement she had exactly pinpointed the old homestead after at least 60 years. From hearing people talk about my Great-grandfather, I gather that he was a man held in high esteem by those who knew him. I think he was a proud man, for I have many pictures of him that he had taken for publication. He was an excellent writer, with large flowing penmanship. The records that he kept for the church at Stone Church, which I have read first hand are given to great detail. He purchased a Model T Ford in the early 1900's and was one of the first persons in Stone church to own an automobile. Since he had to travel a three church charge from Mt. Zion in LMB to the Flicksville church to the church at Stone Church, the automobile greatly reduced his travel time

7 Ella Mae Heffner. Born 8 May 1871 in Mc Connellstown, Huntingdon Co.,Pa. Died 10 Jan 1945 in Bangor, PA. Buried in Three Church Hill Cem.,L.Mt.Bethel Twp.,Northampton Co.PA. Occupation Homemaker. Education High School.

Mrs. Long (everyone always called her Mrs. Long), was involved in church work throughout her lifetime, as a Sunday school teacher, director of music, women's group leader and faithful supporter of her husband's work. She was called Nell by her family and husband and is identified as such on pictures and letters. She was short and plump, a gene she evidently passed on to her daughter Eliza and several granddaughters, myself included. We are also blessed with the "Heffner foot" attributed to her side of the family. If you have large bunions on your feet, thank Ella Mae Heffner Long. A funny family story goes like this. One summer day, several of us were sitting around the large kitchen table in the McEwen kitchen. I was bare foot and complained about my aching hurting bunions. My mom, Lois, said that her bunions hurt too. Then Uncle Howard put his foot on the table and complained about his bunions. Everyone with bunions stuck their feet up on the table including Grandmother Eliza McEwen. Gram said, "My dear mother had feet like this." From that day forward we dubbed our bunioned feet, "The Heffner Foot".
