Bio Digestion

BIO-DIGESTER TUTORIALS

BIO-DIGESTER UNIT 1: The schema is to discuss several methods of bio-digestion, including septic tanks for human waste to capture the gases, water vapor, carbon dioxide, and methane, that are naturally produced. This will also be extended to larger digestive tanks for kitchen, lawn, and garden wastes containing leaves and wood fiber. The key to the bio-digester design(s) will be safety, simplicity, scale ability, economy, and the use of locally materials

The plan will be to remove the water, sulfur, and carbon dioxide from the captured gases. The water to be used for irrigation of the gardens, the carbon dioxide (later converted to calcium carbonate for building materials) to be temporarily discharged throughout the garden area with the water, and the methane stored and mixed with the excess hydrogen gas produced for fuel cell use.

The effluents from the bio-digestion process contain water and a number of alcohols, methanol, ethane, propane, and propane as well as longer chained alcohols. The alcohols C-OH, C2-OH, and C3-OH's can be recovered using a vacuum still for use as a liquid motor fuel for automobiles and other equipment using engines, internal combustion, turbine, and other heat engines. See an old Mother Earth News for a 1981 article for building a vacuum still to recover the alcohols.

The slug produced can be heat dried to kill viruses and bacteria, powered, and used as fertilizer on the gardens. Also, after distillation, the water can be used for garden irrigation.

The goal here is to describe complete recycling of all wastes produced by a family to make the family home energy self sufficient while taking steps to reduce atmospheric, water, and earth pollution.
