Latest Additions to the Web Site/Chutes Checking In

Donald Everett Chute
Date of Check In: 26 July 2001

Leslie Chute-Surch, a descendant of Donald Everett Chute of Bay City, Michigan, has checked in, luckily for us, as we appear to be missing at least one, if not two, full generations of Chutes in that family!

James Henry Chute
Date of Check In: 24 July 2001

Ron Hyatt, a descendant of a James Henry Chute, has checked in, and we're trying to slot his family somewhere on the family tree - all of the James Henry's recorded so far died in childhood, so it seems we're missing a James Henry! While waiting for Ron to dig for more peripheral information (nationality, residences; allied family names), we're hoping someone out there remembers a James Henry Chute from their own genealogical research - we'd love to hear from you!

Samuel Arthur Chute
Date of Addition: 22 July 2001

David Arthur Chute Gaudio has submitted the information he has on his father, Samuel Arthur Chute, even though he and his father never met: he was adopted by his stepfather, E. E. Gaudio when he and his twin brother were two years old.

Roland James Chute, Jr.
Date of Addition: 22 July 2001

Mary Ann ("Peg") Chute checked in, to let me know that, contrary to the web site data, she's still very much alive, thank you (!), and to offer updated information the Roland James Chute, Jr. family. I should mention here that, before learning how to create a separate "residence" line in the genealogical software, the "last known residence" often appears in the "Date/Place of death" line in the web site, although an actual date of death is missing. I have been correcting that when I find those errors, but it appears I missed this one - sorry, Peg!

Australian Chutes
Date of Addition: 9 July 2001

We've heard from Chris Dickins in Australia who has a limited amount of information on his connection to the Chute Family. His grandmother's birth registration, in Chiltern, Victoria, Australia has her father listed as unknown, and her mother as Mary Scheider. The name on her 1917 wedding certificate to Tasman Gordon Anderson lists her maiden name as Mary Eileen Chute Scheider. Although unconfirmed, the family believes Mary Eileen's father was Frederick George Chute, who may have originated in Durban or Durbin ... and Chris also has heard of a connection with Baron Von Meuller, the famous botonist who worked in Australia. If any of this rings a bill with anyone down under who happens to wander through, drop us a line.

Challoner Chute Line
Date of Addition: 22 June 2001

The British Trust has compiled a book on the Vyne, which many of you have; I didn't (yet), so was very pleased to receive a copy of the genealogy page. The title of the page the information was drawn from: "Chute Family Tree". While the rest of us assume the properly sullen and slightly offended expressions at being reduced to mere twigs on the "Chute Family Tree", the good news is, I was able to make corrections to the information on the web site. The line they listed began with the first Challoner Chute and wife Ann Skory.

Walter Chute Vs. Dad and The King
Date of Addition: 17 June 2001

In a study presented by Professor Jean McIntyre, “Priority and Place: Elder & Younger Brothers in Jacobean Fact and Drama”, Department of English, University of Alberta, is the following reference:
“Could I ever believe that a father would disinherit his sunn, his first born, whom only the law of God terms the Lords, nay allmostt uppon any demerift, yet what hath Walt Chute done; why should you throw him oute as a bastard from your nest, spoile him of his birthright, nay of his honor, and reputation in the world. No cause can be so operative to make nature forgett nature, without a great curse inherent potentially. Give me leave to tell yow that it behooves yow to satisfy the world allso, who this notwithstanding believe no ill deserving in your son.“

The quote was lifted from a letter written by Sir John Holles. In a letter to an "ould Mr. Chute", Sir John is trying to dissuade him from disinheriting his eldest son, calling the act “this bloe from your selfe, and house.” Prof. McIntyre added that “Holles, himself an eldest son, regards disinheriting an eldest son almost contrary to nature and cannot believe that Walt Chute could have offended his father so grievously, even if his behavior in Parliament had offended the king." In a response to my inquiry on the subject, she cited the source as “Holles, John. Letters 1587-1637, ed. P.R. Seddon. Nottingham: Thoroton Society Record Series, XXXI, 1975, Vol 1, (1 think), 111.”

The dates don't comfortably fit the Walter we know as Sir Walter Chute, son of Philip of Appledore (not to mention that Philip's Walter wasn't the eldest son, according to our records.) Philip has several dates of reference: born around 1494; acquired old Surrenden in 1553; acquired his additional armorial bearings in 1544 ... by the date of Sir John Holles' earliest possible letter (1587), Philip would have been 93 years old, awfully advanced in age for that time period, and an awfully late date in life to be disinheriting his son Walter -- who, again, wasn't his eldest son. It's possible that Philip's son Walter also had a son named Walter ... and that "ould Mr. Chute" was in fact, our Sir Walter Chute, and not Philip of Appledore. This Walter could be another Walter altogether. If so, this may be our first record of him, whichever Walter he was.

And to give you some further historical perspective, Walter might have possibly been familiar to Lionel Chute, the first American Chute, who was born in 1580 and emigrated to America about 1634.

I've written to the Curator of the Thoroton Society Series in Kew, to see if we can get a copy of the text of the letter, and to try and see if we can get some historical background on how poor Walter had managed to both offend the King of England and enrage his father with his behavior in Parliament, to the point where he may have gotten himself disinherited -- although there's nothing further to suggest that his father actually followed through with his threat. Anyone else want to take a crack at this mystery?

Hannah Chute Poor/Suzannah Poor Brooks
Date of Addition: 15 June 2001

The Manuscripts Department of Indiana University in Bloomington has in their collection manuscripts of anyone interested in researching the family of Suzannah Poor, daughter of Hannah Chute and John Poor, who married Thomas Jefferson Brooks. A more comprehensive description of their collection - which also provides some interesting genealogical data on the Brooks family - can be found in the Source references for this family. Artists in the family might be interested in knowing that Suzannah Poor's niece, Mary Caroline ("Carrie") Brooks, married artist Benjamin Champneys, who is considered by some to be the "Dean" of the White Mountain School style of painting ... which is to say, the "Hudson River Style", minus the Hudson River. Champneys painted many magnificent scenes of the White Mountain region in New Hampshire. His autobiography and other books on his works can be ordered from the New Hampshire Historical Society.

Colonel Pierce Thomas Chute
Date of Addition: 15 June 2001

Those of us seeking Chute ancestors in and around Tralee, Ireland - and by this, of course, I mean: ISAAC and SUE!!! Wake up!!! (They just love it when I do that to them at 3:00 a.m.) Another Tralee Chute appeared in the biographical pages graciously forwarded by Alan Shute of the Shute family. His name was Colonel Pierce Thomas Chute, son of Thomas Chute, both of Tralee. Had quite a military history behind him, as you can see from the notes accompanying the entry. I'm thinking your Thomas's might be in someway related, but can't figure out how. Other biographical entries in the same package were those of: Charles Lennard Chute, and his brother, Reverend Anthony William Chute, both sons of Chaloner William Chute.

George Albert ("Bert") Chute
Date of Addition: 15 June 2001

George Albert ("Bert") Chute, son of Elmus Arthur Chute not only checked in (see below), he also followed through with an amazing package of information, photos and news clippings. The entire huge package has been updated religiously by family members, beginning in 1964, and drawing upon such sources as "The Haggan Papers Genealogy" in the Elgin County Library, The Great Houses of Britain, and Alena Wilson's "The Chute Family Tree" (1964). It appears that most of the work was done by Max Chute, Pearl Chute Brazier and Ruth Chute Gambacort, and runs a whopping 50 pages long. I'll let everyone know when each section is updated to the database - as huge as this is, it may take a little while. Bert, this is amazing - thanks, on behalf of all of us!

Julia Hawes Cleaveland Chute
Date of Addition: 15 June 2001

Julia Hawes Cleaveland Chute, the wife of Reverend Edward Lane Chute, is the subject, along with her family, of a great biographical short story, "The Pioneers". It tells the story of her birth in the "far west" of Marion, Indiana homesteading country, and how she eventually wound up with the Cleaveland family. The story, one of several, was written by Helen Cleaveland Chute Lightner. As the other stories are transribed, I'll upload them; in the meantime, enjoy this one!

Nancy Elsa Chute Harang
Date of Addition: 15 June 2001

Nancy Elsa Chute Harang, daughter of Stanley James Chute and Elsa Anna Wichmann, has sent in genealogical data on the next generation, and biographical sketches of her parents and grandparents as well. Her grandparents were James Potter Chute and Ella Anna Simpson. Nancy and husband Richard Arnold Harang were also researching the history of the New Orleans based Harang family, and were right in the midst of puzzling over how the very early Harang clan started out in Scandanavia and ended up in France, when she ran across the history of the Jutes on the Chute side. It appears that all of their children may be double Vikings!

Harold E. Chute
Date of Addition: 15 June 2001

Please note changes and additions to the records of Harold E. Chute of St. Joseph, Minnesota and his family. Harold was the son of Harold Edward Chute and Julia Hoving. Betty Armstrong was kind enough to send us notice of his recent passing.

Patrick Chute (Liverpool)
Check-In: 11 June 2001

Peter Mullarkey, son of Catherine Chute, and a descendant of another Patrick Chute, checked in. This Patrick, a mariner, is believed to have emigrated from Ireland back to Liverpool, Great Britain in the early 1800's. A few of the families allied with the Chutes in Liverpool in this line are White (Bridget), Parkinson (Frances Ellen) and Phillips (Julia), so if those names ring a bell with anyone, we'd love to hear from you. Peter, meanwhile, has promised further data on the Liverpool Chutes, but is looking for further information on a family history: "There is a family story that one of the Chutes from Ireland was serving in the forces in India, and married a high caste Indian woman. When she was pregnant with her first child, she was sent back to Ireland to have the baby. She died in childbirth, but the child survived. I would love to know if anyone has any more information on this." If this does ring a bell, drop Peter a line at: mul.tay@cwcom.net. (Be sure and let us know, too!)

Harold Glenn Chute
Date of Addition: 11 June 2001

A huge amount of information has arrived from Harold Glenn Chute, including some really amazing family photos. Check out the group photo of the children of Alfred Chute and Olivia Miner circa 1900, the marriage photo of Alfred Edward Chute and wife Nanetta Black, circa 1890, and the photograph of the Donald Eugene and Cecil Eugene Herren Chute family, taken in 1944, as LaVern Chute was departing for World War II. (Don't worry - he returned with enough metal souvenirs to set off most airline security dectectors imbedded here and there, but he came home!) There is so much information, I was only able to add one of the six Chute brothers, but the rest should be up - along with the many photographs - shortly.

George Albert ("Bert") Chute
Check-In: 6 June 2001

George Albert ("Bert") Chute, son of Elmus Arthur Chute checked in also, luckily, as the pertinent date information on this branch of the family effectively ended with grandparents James Albert Chute and Rachel McConnell. Two of Bert's sisters compiled a family tree in March 1986, which he plans to update and send - thanks, Bert!

Robert John Chute
Check-In: 3 June 2001

Another descendant of the Cork Chutes, connected with the Paddy Chute in Kerry mentioned below, this one Robert John Chute has checked in: Sue has promised to send back a data worksheet, with more information. Thanks, Sue!

Paddy Chute/Nora Sheenan
Date of Addition: 30 May 2001

We've heard from Isaac Chute in New Hampshire, one of the Irish Chutes we've been hoping to hear from, considering how little recent information we have on them. Isaac provided a basic pedigree from memory, beginning with his great-grandfather, Paddy Chute, in Kerry, and is planning to question his father, cousins and brothers back in Ireland, to see if we can connect his branch back to the main line.

By the way, the month of May has been basically spent adding a whopping 8-9 pages of Chute and Allied family information to the family records from "The History of Casco, Maine". It's not completely finished yet, and some links are still missing, but the information provided by the book has been invaluable. Chute genealogists might want to consider purchasing their own copy from the Casco Library (see below); the research they've done on the family in Maine has been terrific. Thanks to Maila Chute, for making the suggestion!

Vaughn A. Chute
Check-In: 19 May 2001

The great-grandaughter of Vaughn Augustus Chute, Shanel Janes, checked in, offering to send updates to that branch of the family.

Harlan Eugene Chute/Frances Louise Kerley Family
Date of Addition: 12 May 2001

Thanks to information provided by the Reverend Harlan Eugene Chute and his wife Frances, that his immediate family has been completely updated. The Reverend Harlan Eugene, one of six brothers, is a descendant of the Alfred Chute and Olivia Miner branch; we've also heard from his brother Harold Glenn Chute, who is also collecting data for the family records.
Robert Chute
Date of Addition: 12 May 2001

Robert Phillips Chute of South Berwick, Nova Scotia provided pages of history on the farm on the Post Road, which he owns, dating back six generations to Abraham Chute in 1819. The farm is now being run by his son, David. Interested in both genealogy and history, he has provided us with an invaluable recollection of Nova Scotian (and Nova Scotian Chutes) history ... which will be added to various "Notes" sections over the next few weeks.
Link: William Shute/Chute & Hannah Carter to Lionel Chute Branch
Date of Addition: 12 May 2001

Velma Chute had mentioned to her family that she'd located a link between the family of William Shute/Chute and Hannah Carter, and the Lionel Chute family of descendants, and after adding information from "The History of Casco, Maine", we can confirm that she did - actually, she located several. The first link is through the family of Fisher Mann and wife Eleanor Plummer: one daughter, Eleanor Jane Mann married James Chute, a Lionel Chute direct descendant, and another, Mary A. Mann married Oliver Chute, a direct descendant of William Shute/Chute and Hannah Carter.

Another more complicated link is through the Mayberry family. Iva N. Spiller, daughter of Melissa Chute, of the Shute/Chute line, married Roscoe Mayberry. Roscoe descended from Captain Richard Mayberry, whose grandaughter, Martha Mayberry married Colonel Francis Chute, of the Lionel Chute line.

George Beebe Chute/Lucy Massad Chute
Date of Addition: 17 Apr 2001

Lucy Massad Chute, widow of the recently deceased George Beebe Chute of New London, Connecticut, a long-time correspondent of George Chute, Jr. after the publication of his supplement, wrote with an offer to update us on their family records: eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Thanks to Lucy, we should be able to update that line shortly.
Robert Phillip Chute/Betty Jean McMahon
Date of Addition: 17 Apr 2001

A letter arrived from Robert Phillip Chute of Berwick, King's County, Nova Scotia, with an offer to help update Berwick, Nova Scotia Chute records, if he can ... I promptly took him up on his kind and generous offer by bombarding him with so many questions, if he recovers and we hear from him again, he possibly wins the award for "Most Unflappable Chute". Robert is a direct descendant in the Thomas Aynsley/James Perry line; a farmer (retired now) in Berwick. Son David now runs the family farm.
Alfred Chute/Olivia Miner
Date of Addition: 14 Apr 2001

We've also heard from a descendant of Alfred Chute and Olivia Miner. He tells us, "There are untold hundreds of us here in these two counties (Schuyler and Brown) ..." Hopefully, they'll be included in the family database before too long ... thanks again, David!

Gerald Clark Chute Family
Date of Addition: 14 Apr 2001

We're delighted to have heard from Gerald Clark Chute (father Edward Clark Chute, still living, grandfather Alfred Edward Chute, son of Martin Luther Chute), and have begun to update that line of the family, as it appears we're missing lots of Chutes from that corner of British Columbia. The last time we heard from Gerald, we had him as the father of three children ... it turns out he's the father of nine children, thirteen grandchildren with a fourteenth on the way, and one great-granddaughter. So far, we've updated wife Leandra's side of the family - father Leander Larson of Trofors, Norway and mother Minnie Mabel Boyce of Saskatchewan - and will finish updating the Chute side as soon as Gerald gets back from a dinner engagement - he had to rush out the door!

Descendants of Mary Ann ("Maize") Chute
Date of Addition: 14 Apr 2001

We're also delighted to have heard from a descendant of Courtlan Mellwood Wilson and wife Mary Ann Chute, daughter of Charles Peter Chute, the son of Binea Chute and Louise/Louisa Jane Foster. As we had no children listed for Mary Ann at all, the additions to this family line ought to be considerable. We expect the information from them shortly, and will let you know when the database has been corrected.

Michael John Chute/Mary Ann Lavery
Date of Addition: 14 Apr 2001

Thanks to the information provided by a member of the Lavery family, we were able to update the family records of Michael John Chute and Mary Ann Lavery, who apparently had several more children than were recorded.

Ada Jane Chute/Charles B. Brooks
Date of Correction: 11 Apr 2001

Every Chute genealogist will tell you that the really fun part of tracking Chutes, in past American centuries, is trying to keep track of how many Chutes married first cousins, second cousins, third cousins ... continually re-joining lines several times, within a family. Fortunately for our collective gene pool - or we'd all be walking around with three heads - sailing to the New World became very popular indeed, and we found ourselves finally able to marry people we weren't closely - or even distantly - related to, which must have been quite a novelty for some of us. However, there is one 19th century re-joining of lines to correct in the database: Ada Jane Chute married one Charles B. Brooks, the son of Israel D. Brooks, who was the grandson of Timothy Brooks and Joanna Chute. Israel, as I'm sure you recall, was the brother of Mary Ann Brooks, who married John Eber Chute. For those keeping track of such things, we've deleted the duplicate records for Charles B. and Israel (GP6295.htm#head4).

Casco, Maine Chutes
Date of Addition: 10 Apr 2001

We're still updating Leander Freedom Chute family records - for example, additional data on the Clarence Wellwood Chute and Robert Dingley Chute families that were not recorded earlier - but have also learned that the Casco, Maine Chutes took up eight pages of the town's anniversary celebration commemorative "yearbook", containing pictures, historical and genealogical information of both the resident Chutes and the town itself. For those interested in collecting "Chute" memorabilia ... or for those merely shocked to realize that, despite a full college education, they learned absolutely nothing about the history of the town of Casco, Maine ... the book can be purchased from the Casco, Maine town library at P.O. Box 420, Casco, Maine 04015 ... $25 for the book, $3 for postage.
Anybody Named Francis Chute
Date of Addition: 08 Apr 2001

We've updated the Chute family records with a batch of IGI records, all of them about Chutes with the first name of Francis, so if you were missing a "Francis" he might be recorded now. One item of note: we have one Francis Chute married to Rebecca Osmond on 27 JUN 1723, very close in age to another Francis Chute, son of Edward Chute and Catherine Keck, who was christened APR of 1697, Sherborne Saint John, Hampshire, Great Britain. If there's anyone with the records proving they're the same Francis - which one suspects they are - let me know!

Sybil Chute and Charles Ansley Armstrong/Wallace W. Armstrong
Date of Addition: 08 Apr 2001

Nan Curtis of California provided additional information on the descendants of Sybil Chute and Charles Ansley Armstrong, in this case, their son Wallace W. Armstrong and his family.
William B. Chute (1797)/Anna Varner
Date of Addition: 06 Apr 2001

Thanks to Jerry Eakle and genealogical researcher Karen Keleher, the family line for William B. Chute, born 1797 and the subsequent lines of the John Clinton Chute and Douglas McClelland Chute families have been corrected and updated. We're still missing the current family members, though!
The Leander Freedom Chute Family
Date of Addition: 06 Apr 2001

The first responses to the Chute Genealogy Project mailing are arriving - Michelle Chute Spanos, granddaughter of Leander Freedom Chute responded ... we discovered that we're missing most of the descendants of that branch of the family; we'll post again, when we get all of them entered into the database.
The "How They Met" Section
Date of Addition: 25 Mar 2001

Those of you who have already updated their line of the family tree should know that we've added another section of data that will be included in the family data worksheet being sent out to Chutes who may or may not have access to the Internet. The section is "How They Met", and refers to those infamous first encounters between future husbands and wives. A little icon will be added to your database, and your story included. Before sending out the worksheets, I set up an example, using my parents' and a few other first encounters.
Elizabeth Chute, b. 1577
Date of Correction: 25 Mar 2001

There were two Elizabeth Chute's, both born 1577, whose fathers were George Chute. Jerry felt certain they were the same individual. He was correct, they were. The free-standing, unlinked Elizabeth and father George were deleted from the database. For those watching the database group numbers, the deleted version was "gp370.htm#head2". The remaining Elizabeth is located at "gp690.htm#head1".

Sybil Chute and Charles Ansley Armstrong/Mary Elizabeth Armstrong
Date of Addition: 25 Mar 2001

Please note the additions provided by Jerry Eakle, another descendent of Sybil Chute and Charles Ansley Armstrong. Jerry's line diverges with Sybil and Charles' daughter, Mary Elizabeth Armstrong.

Sybil Chute and Charles Ansley Armstrong
Date of Addition: 24 Mar 2001

Betty Armstrong of Hawaii, married to a direct descendant of Sybil Chute and Charles Ansley Armstrong, sent a package of information on that branch of the family, including photocopies of photos and newsclippings of Sibyl and her husband, and their descendants. She also included a photocopy of a fascinating newsclipping from New Ulm County, covering the story of the accidental shooting of Ray Armstrong at the home of Arthur Wellington Chute. In addition to the tragedy itself, the article also included a few other scandals that had befallen this branch of the family: the suspicious death of Thomas Chute, and the rather scandalous elopement of Arthur's sister, Ocie Ella Chute ... with her sister's husband.
