Latest Additions and Revisions to the Web Site/Chutes Checking In
Date of Additions/Revisions: Monday, September 26, 2005
Thanks to Andrea Brown's ongoing Brown Family research, the records of
Josiah Brown and Lucinda Chute Brown have been updated, in addition to the records of
several individuals in the Abram Chute and Ann Harris Chute
family.
We were saddened to learn of the recent passing of several members of the family:
Robert Phillips Chute checked in from Nova Scotia in 2001,
and kept in touch with revisions and comments as often as he could. I was deeply saddened to
learn of his death this month, and our hearts are with his family - of which he was always so
glowingly proud. He will definitely be missed.
Other family records which have been updated: Clarence Roderick
(or Roderik) Chute and Myrtle Lucy Bennett Chute.
Unfortunately, Clarence's record did not contain a biographical summary. Myrtle Chute's record
was not just updated but revised - a Bennett database had already listed her as deceased back
in 1986, so it appears they confused her with someone else. She and husband George Edward
Chute had also apparently had a son, Edward, and he has been added to the family records.
Myrtle's biographical summary is wonderful to read - did you know that in 1968, she was crowned
the TOPS Queen of Canada? Or that she created the recipe for the first batch of canned baked
beans for the Graves/Avon canning factory? Apparently, she was also very creative - making
special mittens ("her Christmas tradition was to knit unique mittens for her great-
grandchildren and other lucky recipients") and quilts, along with her sister Margaret. If
anyone has pictures of these items, we'd love to see them.

Thanks to Sharon Anne Chute's brave decision to boldly go
where no Chute has gone before - and fill out the new Chute Family Online Data Worksheet - the
family group of Alvin Leroy Chute has been updated.
The transcription of a Family Data Worksheet submitted by
Raymond Jerome Chute, Jr. has revised his family record as well as the family record of
his sister, Mary Dana Chute Clement and Frank Renal Clement.
The transcription of a Family Data Worksheet submitted by Llewelyn
Lloyd Chute in 1951 has made extensive changes in his family line and added another
interconnective "loop":
Revision to the record of Charles Chester Chute and
Florence ("Flora") Baker Chute, revision of the record of her parents
Henry Lambert Baker and Lucy Ann Stronach Baker; addition of a
Family Group record for her grandfather Henry Baker and Eunice
Tupper Baker as Eunice's second marriage; the connection of this record to the existing record
for her first marriage to Jordan Bowlby.
Jordan and Eunice
were the parents of Alice Maria Bowlby, who married
Gilbert Randall
Chute. Gilbert and Alice Maria were the parents of ...
Charles
Chester Chute.
The record of Gilbert Randall Chute has been revised to include
his military service in the Civil War with the Company M, 2nd Heavy Artillery Regiment
Massachusetts, and that information has also been added to the Civil War section on the
Events in History page.

Thanks to Evelyn Roediger, the transcription error in
Susannah
Uhl's and
Mary Eva Roth's birthdates has been corrected.
Garry Livingstone Chute and Deborah Mae Matthews Chute.
Trevor Wade Chute and Lisa Dawne Dinsmore Chute.
As some have noticed, I'm in the midst of trying to streamline the website: cleaning up
the Home Page so that it's a little less confusing; moving past additions to an "archive"
section, and a few other changes. Roberto Edouardo Chute suggested creating a "Who's Who In
the Chute Family" section, quite some time ago (he probably has given up on me, by now) - but
that is in the works also.
One new addition to the website is an online "Chute Family Data Worksheet", which eliminates
the need for hard copy worksheets for those with computer access. For those who would prefer
to complete worksheets manually and mail them in, that option is still available. The online
worksheet is available on the Home Page, and may be used for additions, corrections or merely
comments and questions.
Another change that will take place ... sometime! ... is the ability to add "post-it notes"
or comments directly to the Family Group pages. This will be useful for those who are
doing research on individuals in their own lines and want to share what they've discovered
with other researchers.

Captain and Deacon Daniel Chute and Hannah Adams Chute. All
of his WEC notes have been (finally!) added to his "Notes" section, as well as an additional
reference ("Reminiscences of an Nonagenarian"), which adds another entry to the
Chute Family Mysteries section: what WAS that 20-foot high "Flying
Giant" of Byfield-Newbury that Daniel recorded in his diary? Apparently, he wasn't the only
resident who witnessed the inexplicable phenomenon, which also appears to have badly frightened
a herd of cows.
Daniel Chute and Elizabeth McGraw Chute. Craig E. and
Betty Hubbard have done some impressive research on this Irish Chute branch, and the details
and biographical sketches are all their work. Of this group (remainder to follow shortly):
Harold Lewis Yahn and Laura Regina Chute Yahn.
John Paul Cook and Rose Angela Yahn Cook.
Robert Michael Cook and Susan Burger Cook.
David Edward Cook and Therese Bartsch Cook.
Darrin Martin and Cathy Cook Martin.

Lastly, Linda Shepperd of Woodfield Publishing, Ltd. has been kind enough to provide a
direct link to Francis' book so those who have been having difficulty navigating directly to
the book - try one more time by clicking on the book picture on the Index Page, and the link
will take you directly to the book. Thanks, Linda.

James Marion Chute family record.
From the Chute Family Message Board,
Gladys Chutte. An
Argentinian "Chutte", descended from two "Chutte" brothers, with a French Basque oral tradition
somewhere in the family. While this may be a version of Lyman Wallace and Robert John that was
garbled through the generations, if not, I thought the "French Basque" oral tradition was
interesting, reminding me of the "Chevalier de Chute" that is part of the Irish Chutes
folklore. I've put her into the Argentinian Index as well, and listed her as an Individual
Entry - the translation of her posting is in her "Notes" section. (I just know that two
generations down the line, SOMEONE is going to ask, "Where was that French Basque reference
again?")

Here's a chance for Chutes who love challenges to figure out where Guilford Dudley Chute
went, over the course of his life ... I've been peering at this account for most of the day,
trying to read it. My grandfather had sent him a Chute Family Data worksheet to complete,
and you're looking at one of the questions he asked. The legible handwriting asking the
question belongs to George M. Chute, Jr. The response was written by Guilford Dudley Chute.
It looks like he charged from one end of the continent to the other! I can make out some
words in this: "wood-turning", "home-steading" ... Colorado? After that, my vision starts
to blur and I develop a headache. :) Anybody else want to take a crack at this?
John Stevens and Lucy Belle Chute Stevens.
Robert Eugene Balcomb and Joan Elizabeth Chute Balcomb.
Raymond Croft Chute and Esther Elizabeth Keddy Chute.
William Alfred Maw and Minnie May Chute Maw.
W.A. Anderson and Elizabeth Jean Maw Anderson.
Thomas Charlton and Rose Ella Chute Charlton.
Guilford Dudley Chute and Alice Elizabeth Croft Chute.
Foster Morse Chute and Laura Belle Balcomb Chute. Clears up the
confusion as to whether she was "Laura Balcomb Chute", or "Belle Balcomb Chute".
Silas Parker Chute and Lucy Balcomb Chute. Note that the
two twins who were mentioned on WEC: page 158:IX.187 under "Silas Parker Chute" as
"nameless" were identified by Hettie Morse Chute (II) and Winnie Laurier Chute as Harry Parker
Chute and Hettie Morse Chute (I), and that information has been added to the database. Given
Hettie's (I) middle name, you might assume her mother was Mehitable Morse, but the gravestone
identifies them as the children of Silas and Lucy Balcomb Chute.
Maxwell Chute and Winifred Gertrude Owen Chute.
James Perry Chute and Adelia Foster Chute.
Samuel Balcomb Chute and Ruth Ann Margeson Chute. The full
story behind the famous "Apple King of Nova Scotia" and the "Grand Old Lady of Kingston".
Harley Raymond Chute and Myrtle Lucy Shaw Chute. Addition of
three unrecorded children of this family.
Winnie Laurier Chute. There was a collection of correspondence
between Winnie Laurier Chute and George M. Chute, Jr. that covered the period from 1971 to
1976. Winnie is the Chute researcher who found the gravestones of Harry Parker and Hettie
Morse Chute (see above), as well as a previously undocumented connection between the Barteaux,
Charlton and Chute families which I tried to piece together with some online assistance from
the Charlton family website. More dramatically, it was in transcribing the correspondence that
I realized that, even though carbon dating may cover huge periods of time, carbon
paper
doesn't -- my grandfather used carbon paper to make duplicates of his return correspondence,
and his replies are now beginning to noticeably fade. So if anyone knows of sure-fire methods
for preserving carbon-copies of things, drop me a line - I'd be very interested!

Cornelius Chute. This is a shipping record which caught my
attention for three reasons: I never heard of him before, he was connected with the
Netherlands (which I'd not seen before) and he also may have come from a shipping family,
with connections to Flanders. As there have been unsubstantiated hints that the Chutes
were originally a shipping family from Flanders, before they were in Normandy - this
record stuck out for a number of reasons, so I've added him to the database in the hope that
someone in the Chute family can make more sense of him at some point. Can anyone here read
medieval Dutch?

Mary Chute Bramston and Wither Bramston. This marriage also
produced a
Coat of Arms, although unfortunately not in color.
William John Chute, M.P. and Elizabeth Smith Chute. From all
accounts, William John Chute was another interesting character - perhaps not as "notoriously"
interesting as some of our other relatives - but still interesting. He did, however, make
quite a memorable impression on his neighbors that many of them felt compelled to mention
him in their own records.
William Nelligan and Dorothea Chute Nelligan (or Neligan): the
addition of their son, John Chute Nelligan.
A new
Chute Family Mystery to solve: an unexpected discovery of an
"Aunt Chute" mentioned in a letter from Mary O'Connell to her son, Daniel, Jr. Not that an
"Aunt Chute" is unique - but the letter writer definitely was unique: she was the wife of
the man called the "Great Liberator" of Ireland - Daniel O'Connell. As O'Connell was raised
in Kerry before he became world famous, we would have expected that he knew a few Chutes, but
where did he get an "Aunt Chute"? Any Irish Chutes who want to take a crack at this mystery?
Francis Chute and Arabella Denny Chute. Their wedding

George Chute and Elizabeth Gilbert Chute. These records have
been condensed and George's Navesink Oath of Allegiance in NOV 1665 has been added to his
records.
Francis Chute and Rebecca Welch Chute - their marriage record
at S. Peter and S. Kevin in Dublin, in 1741. Nothing more is known about them.
William Lyde Wiggett Chute and Martha Buckworth Chute.
Ann Rachel Hicks Cromie and Sir William Lambert Cromie. Ann
Rachel Hicks, the only daughter of Sir William Hicks and Ann Rachel Chute Hicks, was next
in line to inherit at least three major estates - including the Vyne. She was "the Chute
Heiress" of Hampshire in the early 1800's. But something happened that made her two Chute
uncles hastily change their Wills, bequeathing the Vyne and all their estates to a Godson:
William Lyde Wiggett (who cheerfully agreed to change his name to William Lyde Wiggett Chute),
instead of to their niece, Ann. It's always entertaining to realize that the Chute family
isn't always as solid, respectable and predictable as we like to think we are: "How Ann Hicks
Lost the Vyne" is now in her notes section, courtesy of one of her in-laws. Keep in mind
that the story was composed to elicit reactions of various sorts in Victorian drawing rooms,
but, pertinent aspects of this story (such as marriage licenses, home sales, etc.) are backed
up with records of one sort or another.

Chute is an addition to the database, based on a record of a telephone conversation
between him and my grandfather, George M. Chute, Jr. - he is the son of Stanley Wilfred Chute
and Charlotte M. Staake. His children, and allied family information, has been added to the
database.

William Derward Chute, M.D. and Hazel Chestnut Angwin Chute.
Two family history sources have added details to the Surrenden/Bethersden Chute
group - which, as always, continues to be a source of much suffering and angst among their
record keeping descendants: one source was From Somerset to King and Queen County: A
History of the Hendens and their American Connections. Of particular note are the Henden
Family records of Thomazine Henden, who married Edmund Criche
before marrying Edward Chute. The Henden records of her birthdate still do not coincide with
the date (1581) reflected in her marriage license records, but instead coincide with the 1569
date in the Ancestral File. On the other hand, their records do reflect a sibling born in 1580,
so perhaps there was a considerable gap in the births of the Henden offspring. The text of
Steer's research can be found online at:
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~hendon/somersettokingandqueen.htm.
But of equal interest are their photographs taken at an American-British Henden Family
reunion recently, which includes photographs of the Henden family estate in Kent, as well as a
wonderful photograph of the interior hall of Godinton Manor, which is the family home of the
Toke family, in Kent. The Toke family also married the Chute Family in the person of
Eleanor Toke, and it is for possession of this manor that Eleanor
and her husband George Chute went to court when Eleanor's father Nicholas bequeathed it to
a nephew as opposed to his daughters and their husbands. (They tried to declare Nicholas
as incompetant, and lost the case - and the manor).
The management of the Toke estate is the subject of The account book of a Kentish
Estate, 1616-1704, edited by Eleanor C. Lodge and published by H. Milford of the Oxford
University Press in 1927, and is now available on Ancestry.com. It provides a wealth of
wonderful detail on the management of a large country estate in the County of Kent, such as
was held by the Tokes and the Hendens and the Chutes, and there are a few "Chute" entries in
the estate account book.
Date of Additions/Revisions: Friday, July 15, 2005
George Edward Chute and Marie Sausser Chute. There were
two entries in the database for this family: one with son Albert N. Chute and father "George
E.", and another with daughter Lydia and father "George Edward". The two items have been
merged. There were several letters written between
Mary Irene Chute
and George M. Chute, Jr. on family history which have been transcribed and added to her notes
section. Irene wrote to her first cousin Lydia and asked her to contribute family history as
well, so the
Lydia Eleanor Chute Normandin and Leonard W.
Normandin family has been updated with information from Lydia's letter.
Finally, the records for
Reverend George Trevor Chute and wives
Elizabeth Smyth and Maria Willington are more complete. There were several separate entries
for members of this family which have been pulled together. It was their census location of
Shropshire which tied the George Chute-Elizabeth Smyth family to George of the Kerry, Ireland
land records, and the entry for
George Chute who was the father
of Violet E. Chute in Paddington, Middlesex. That George was the son of the Reverend George
Trevor Chute. Stephen Silver Chute was added to this family as well from the "Miscellaneous
Records" section. Finally, son William Walter Chute can also be located on an Australian
passenger list, but as there is a death record for him in Britain, it does not appear that he
remained in Australia.
