The in-progress task of annotating the stanzas of Anthony Chute's Beawtie dishonored generated a brief
discussion on his Rosicrucian reference, which is presently sitting right in the middle of
the footnotes - if anyone else would like to weigh in on the discussion, I can move it to its own space. Any and all
comments are always welcome.

The big news this week is Francis Chute's discovery of the previously unknown incident which
earned Philip Chute (of Appledore) his reward of a sapphire from King Henry VIII's own ring - the sapphire which he
quietly returned to Queen Elizabeth near the end of his own life, and without explanation, so it appears that the incident
was even known to the Royal family after King Henry VIII's death. Obviously, Philip had done something so
astounding on behalf of the Royal Family that he not only received the sapphire, but the royal canton on the Chute Arms,
and managed to remain in favor throughout his life and throughout a succession of different monarchs, but what that
"something" was remained a mystery until now. Francis's research and discovery of what that incident was has been added
to the website - although you may find some small formatting errors, those are being worked on. There is also a map and
some photographs which still need to be added.
At the same time, Lionel Chute found a resource online, Collectanea Anglo-Poetica or A Bibliographical and
Descriptive Catalogue of a Portion of a Collection of Early English Poetry, with quite a few pages devoted to
Anthony Chute, the son of Philip of Appledore. This rather lengthy resource, containing an
extract of Anthony's work, Beawtie dishonored has been added to his notes and is still in the process of being
annotated. Nonetheless, it is there now for everyone to read. Thanks, Lionel! (Also, as my OCR software took one look
at the Middle English and had a nervous breakdown, the poem extracts and additional commentary from Rev. Thomas Corser
needed to be re-typed manually - I apologize for the few typographical errors that are left; I'm still catching those).

The Chute Family Records have moved - again - this time they're back there they started (at least for the North
American Chutes) - in Massachusetts, where I've moved with the hope of attending graduate school. I'll be going for a
dual Masters in Archival Management and History, on weekends and evenings, in addition to looking for a new job, so I might
not initially have as much time to work on the Chutes as I have over the last few weeks or so. Needless to say, my mailing
address has changed, so send me an e-mail if you plan on mailing anything, and I'll give you the new one.

Henry J. Chute. This is an as yet unconnected record of the grandson of a member of the
British Coast Guard, John Hocken of Ruan Minor, Cornwall. However, Hocken appears to have been stationed in either
Sussex or Kent at the time his daughter Eliza married an unnamed Chute and gave birth to Henry in 1870, and by 1881 Eliza
and son Henry were living in John's household in Kent, the whereabouts of her husband unknown.

Father John Kostka Chute of Australia sent in the Mass Card from his sister
Joan Chute
McCormack's funeral mass in January of this year, and it has been added to her notes section. He added,
"One of my elder sisters, Joan, died in January. She had a remarkable life. A Mother of ten. They were all with her when
she passed away and they all prepared her requiem and burial. It was wonderfully done and a fitting tribute to a lovely
lady. Joan was married to Tom McCormack who was a very well known cattle auctioneer."
Two more contributions to the discussion of Charles Chute and the Crispe family: Steve Chute's contribution on
June 6th (it arrived after the Computer Crash of 2006; my apologies to Steve for failing to bring your attention to
it until now), and Francis Chute's comment dated June 20th - with a possible clue on the identity of the "Miss Redd"
who was married to Oliver Chute. Both comments have been added to the Crispe discussion.
There have also been two more comments added to the Arthur Chute discussion, by Lionel Chute
on June 10th and then Steve Chute on June 12th, who have been uncovering more records that could be tied to the Chutes.

You now know the date of the Great Computer Crash of 2006 (fan overheated, stopped and the interior
fried) - so a new system had to be purchased and reconfigured, but -- having learned my
lesson from the last time a computer fried on me - we did have a back up. Actually, now we have
an even better back-up system, in the form of an exterior hard drive (as opposed to floppy discs).
It has just taken me a while to get everything re-installed and running again. If I haven't
responded to an e-mail please send it again - it may have scrolled offline while I was pulling
the new system together.
A big chunk of Australian Chutes is in the process of being pieced together and possibly
connected to the Irish ("Chute Hall") Main Line, thanks to research being done on two fronts.
The first, the result of extensive research done by Janet Chute of Ireland, resulted in a
Masters' Thesis, written for Trinity and All Saint's College, University of Leeds:
"Chute's Western Herald: A Case Study of a Provincial Newspaper in Late 18th and
Early 19th Century Ireland" - which we are delighted to add to our
"Current and Past Research on Family History, Origins and Specific Lines of The Chute
Family" section. Her thesis is a delight to read for anyone interested in Irish history
(or in provincial newspaper history) - but for Chute genealogists, the chapter of note is
the tantalizing fifth, Pierce Chute and Chute's Western
Herald.
Two interesting clues in this family history are: (1) the fact that the Chute's
Western Herald Pierce (actually Pierce, Sr.) was the
cousin of "Caleb Chute". We do have a Caleb Chute in this
time frame - he's the son of Francis Chute and Ruth
Falkiner Chute. For Pierce Sr. and Caleb to have been cousins, they should both be
grandsons of Richard Chute and Charity Herbert Chute. Our
next (and hopefully) last step of this puzzle is ... which of Richard's sons was the
father of Pierce?
There is also the marriage of Pierce's son (also named Pierce) to Arabella Denny or
Arabella Denny Chute, described as a "distant cousin" and with a death notice in the
Cork Examiner on 17 FEB 1853: "CHUTE, Arabella Denny "Mrs Pierce Chute" ( ); ;
Ballyroe Tralee KER IRL; Cork Examiner (COR IRL); 1863-2-17; dja." There appear to
be two Arabella Denny's and an Arabella Denny Chute. The unexpected "Arabella Denny
Chute" turns out to be the daughter of the Reverend George Trevor Chute and Elizabeth
Smythe (or Smythe Silver) Chute, who may not have lived long enough to have married
anyone - although it suggests (again) that George Trevor Chute was tied in very
closely in some fashion to this family.
It should also be noted that (2) Pierce, Sr. had three sons - his namesake, Pierce, and
sons Thomas and Alexander. This is the closest yet to tying in a huge chunk of Australian
Chutes to the main line ... particularly as one of their immediate ancestors is a
Pierce Alexander Chute!
And speaking of Thomas Chute ... also tying in Australian Chutes is research being
done by Jessica Dempsey and by Raewyn Tutty - who had provided the original miscellaneous
record of William Quill and Margaret Chute, back in Ireland. Discovering that the
"Honora Chute"s in the Australian immigration records may have actually been "Honora
Quill Chute's, and that the individual record of Thomas Chute and Eliza Williams Chute
was connected to this family was a small but important breakthrough in pulling together
the records of this branch of Irish, Australian and New Zealand Chutes. There is still
more information to come, as we need to connect James and Honora (Quill) Chute with the
original miscellaneous record of William and Margaret (Chute) Quill.
This record also includes a family drama in the form of a murder, inquest and incarceration
in a notorious Australian insane asylum, the Ararat.

A few weeks ago, I posted the following:
A record that needs translating:
Norfolk: Norwich - Freemen of Norwich, 1714-1752
Marriages
The Freemen of Norwich 1714-1752
Frebridge In Mrslande
County: Norfolk
Country: England
Devereux Chute, appr. Francis Gardiner, esq. 24 Feb 1715. f.
10d.
I'm unsure what the abbreviations f. 10d. and appr. mean in this entry,
and have no idea what Frebridge In Mrslande means. Devereux "approved" the marriage
of Francis Gardiner, Esq,? He "appropriated" the bride of Francis Gardiner, Esq.?
"Apprehended"? "Appreciated"? Actually, I'm guessing the bride or the groom was a minor and
needed the "approval" of an adult, but I'm not certain of that. Is there anyone out there who
can make sense of this record?
Francis Chute graciously provided the explanation:
"Devereux Chute (1691-1724) 2nd son of Thomas Chute (1663-1701) and Elizabeth Revett or
Rivett (1668-1730) was unmarried and died December 1724, buried at S Pickenham Jan 8 1725 -
see ledger stone under altar. His father's Will in 1700 (item 31M57/764 in Hampshire Records
Office) gave to Devereux [who was then still a child] £1000 "to be used by my executors for
the binding him out unto some trading employmentand to settle him therein or otherwise for his
benefit in some profession or employment as my executors shall judge best for him". The Will
also gave to Devereux £25 per annum "until he is bound out" and then £12 p.a. during his
apprenticeship and no longer.
This leads to the answer to your main question. "Appr." means apprenticed to Francis Gardiner,
esq. I believe this was as a Linen Draper. He was aged 24 in 1715. He achieved the useful
status of a Freeman of Norwich before dying at age 33. (I guess that Mrslande was a
contraction for one of the Norwich parishes but am not certain.)
By the way ... the name Devereux simply means someone from Evreux in Normandy, and I suspect
it entered the family from deference to a benefaction from a Devereux earl of Essex."
