Various - and the Adoption Issue
Date of Addition: Saturday, December 28, 2002

Jennie Mildred Greenough Clarke, the daughter of Abba R. ("Abbie") Chute and William A. Greenough, sent in both a letter and family data worksheet in 1961, and her records have been updated. Abbie Chute apparently had the Chute Family Bible in her possession, and there is a good deal of correspondence from various family members urging that she be contacted, for that reason.

Another Jennie, Jennie Love Chute Swindell, wrote a long, chatty letter in 1951, acting as something as a Berwick, Nova Scotia point person, and providing contacts for other branches of the family. Her letter has been transcribed and uploaded and is in her notes.

The family of Myles Wotton Chute responded in 1961, but remarked that the husband and father of their family, Edward Ensley Chute had passed away quite young (1954), and that they knew very little about his family. Phyllis Snow Chute had remarried and was Phyllis Chute Hartford, by that point.

The daughters of Walter Frederick Edwards have been changed - rather than both being the daughters of first wife Ethel Wales, one is now the daughter of second wife Eloise Breed.

Finally, one of several letters from Lois E. Fullwiler, has been transcribed and uploaded - she's the daughter of Eliza Annes Chute and Frank F. Edwards. One interesting item of gossip she relates pertains to David Prior Chute, Jr. - apparently, he was the father of two children, not one, as was reported: the eldest with a woman with the surname of Perry, and who kept the surname of Perry and not Chute, and the younger was actually his wife's nephew, and was raised as a Chute. Edward's mother and father were only identified as a "Wotton" and an Elizabeth McDonough. I don't know if a legal adoption took place, but he and his family have carried the name of Chute. She suggested that they be filed under the "Allied Family" section. (I should also point out that, until there's some other confirmation of this, I'm filing this under "family gossip" - interesting, worth being recorded, possibly has good basis in fact, but not yet confirmed.)

Traditionally, genealogy has concerned itself with "blood" versus "non blood" lines, a tradition which is, for very good reasons, becoming less and less important. At one time, legitimate versus non-legitimate children affected inheritances; these days, that is not the case, and both adoptive parents and children often take exception to their offspring being singled out. In fact, these days, the only good reason I can think of for recording adopted versus non-adopted children would be medical history reasons.

A good example: there is a theory being studied now, that survival of the Bubonic Plague in the Middle Ages MAY have given genetic descendants of the survivors an immunity factor that could shield them from current viruses and infections, such as AIDS. Again, this being still a theory, none of us have any interest in testing it, and we still have no proof that our ancestor - in this case Ambrose - ever contracted the disease in the first place - it's just a theory we have, based on his being the only recorded Chute to have survived that period of time. However, this would be one case where knowing if you're a genetic or non-genetic descendant could have some interest for a medical researcher.

But back to the issue at hand: I have no idea how Edward Ensley's family feels about it, but my POV is simple: Edward Ensley was raised as a Chute and carries the name of Chute; as far as I'm concerned, he's a Chute. So no, I won't be insulting the entire family by tossing them into the "Allied Family" section.

Maud Olivia Chute was many things: the City Clerk of Hillsboro, Vernon County, Wisconsin for 20 years, a teacher, civic leader and member of numerous committees and boards. The descendants of Alfred Chute held a reunion and discussed updating their branch of William Edward Chute's 1894 Genealogy - Maud Olivia was appointed the point person on the project. Shortly after this reunion, she was contacted by George M. Chute, Jr., seeking information. The correspondence between Maud Olivia and other members of her family is extensive, and she communicated everything she learned to George M. Chute, Jr., for his 1967 Supplement. As a result of their correspondence, the two compiled a mimeographed pamphlet on the Descendants of Alfred Chute, for this branch of the family.

It will take a long time for all of her correspondence to be transcribed and uploaded - all of it is interesting and discusses her knowledge of various other Chute family members. So far, I've uploaded her obituary and a few of her letters from 1950 & 1951, as well as a letter written to her by her cousin Hallie Oleta Chute.

Speaking as the daughter of a Chute, she is now my own personal heroine for her charming rebuke of my grandfather: "You are asking for the sons: don't the daughters have any consideration in your scheme of the genealogy? I think there really are more daughters than sons; I know their names if they marry are not likely to be Chute, but they should be considered." (I'm not sure she would have made any sense out of my response, "You go, girl!", but I said it, anyway, and personally, I think someone ought to go engrave that posthumously on her gravestone.) Women's lib hadn't even made a blip on the national radar screen when she wrote that - in 1951. Also, I'm sure my grandfather took it with his usual good nature - their correspondence went on for many years after that.

The files affected were:

Maud Olivia Chute
Eral Campbell Chute
Hallie Oleta Chute
Elberta Chute Tupper
James Hervey Chute. Note changes made to their children - Carl Dabb has been changed to reflect his being the son of Ida Snyder's first husband, whose given name is unknown. Maud also provided the death and burial dates for Ida Dabb Snyder Chute.

Glennis Irene Chute and George Raymond Lynch.
Richard Martin Chute and Deanna Jean Weer
Robert Andrew Chute and Ruth Irene Neal
Laurel Helen Chute and Jack Wayne Backus
Glenna Opal Chute and Rowland Wilson Stead
Harold Glenn Chute and Dorothy Austiff Chute
Wesley Barclift, the son of Harriett A. Chute and George Barclift. The data Wesley provided, by way of a letter to Maud Chute, was filled with Barclift family information on his second marriage, and on his children by his first wife -- which has all been added to the family records along with one of his comments, which cracked me up:
"I'm working in a cabinet or furniture shop, trying to keep the wolf from the door. At least it isn't quite as bad as one of the men at the shop said. He said the old wolf he had been fighting away had had pups!"

His children are:
James Edward Barclift, Charles Wesley Barclift, Jayce Temple Barclift (not 'Joyce' as was previously recorded), and Harriette Louise Barclift.

Benjamin Chute, in a household with his siblings Charles, Henrietta and niece Minetta Ann, above, according to the 1881 Bridgetown, Nova Scotia census.
Enoch Steadman Chute & Eliza Ann Gilliatt Chute. According to the 1881 Bridgetown census, he was widowed, and living with the Bath family, which appeared to consist of a widowed father of four sons. I'm unsure what the familial connection was, if any.
Gilbert Fowler Chute. Living with him in 1881 is his sister Margaret Ann Chute Fash, her son Lorenzo Dow Fash, his wife Lavinia Chute Fash (daughter of Handley Chute and Martha Phinney), and two of their children.
Gilbert Spurr Chute and Sibyl Marshall Chute. At the time of the 1881 census, their two daughters Celina E. Chute and Harriet Alice Chute were living with them.

Various 1881 British Census Records have been added to the Miscellaneous Records section. Some other records have been updated with 1881 Census data:

Reverend Theophilius Dacre Chute and his sister Georgina Fanny Chute -- Georgina wasn't even at home when the Census Taker came calling - she was visiting a family identified as the "Niggett" family, and was categorized as a visitor. I rather suspect this was actually a branch of the "Wiggett" family, and there was a transcription error, but I've left the record as is, and noted the suspicion, held despite the fact that she wasn't identified as a relative. Her brother was working in White Colne, the position he held before becoming Rector in Norfolk.

Note that a few children have been added to this family, based on Burke's Peerage and Landed Gentry data, so those with GEDCOMS take note.

Brother Edward Russell Chute's family was also recorded, although there is a slight conflict between his wife's name being "Nina Mary" or "Mary Nina" Firth - note the addition of her father's name, and the revision in the place of birth for all four of their sons.

Census records of The Reverend Devereaux Wiggett Chute has a conflict in the daughter department - family correspondence mentioned only Maud Eleanor and Norah; the 1881 British Census mentions Maria L. and Norah, but not Maud. All three names have been entered into the family record with that qualification - this could be a transcription error, but until we can confirm that, I'd like to leave both names in the record.

Census records were also added to the records of the James Henry Chute, William Macready Chute, Stephen Macready Chute. Note the addition to James Henry of the Ellen Maude who was originally slotted as the daughter of William - census records indicate that she was his younger sister, who was living with him in 1881.

Changes have also been made to the following records:

Chaloner William Chute and wife Eleanor Jane Portal Chute were revised, based on 1881 Census Records.

Alvin Wellington Chute, and, in conjunction with this record, the C.O. Anderson family, Kathleen Florence Chute Spencer, Evelyn Chute Ramacier, Marlene Ramacier Schneider and Lawrence Ramacier.

Another in this line, Jean Marlys Chute married a "Thomas V. Sullivan", who was further identified in Daisy Osborne's worksheet as "Thomas Valentine Sullivan". It's an unusual name, made even more unusual by the fact that it is also the name of a famous sea captain who founded the YMCA in the United States. No record of the land- locked namesake in Minnesota, though, although he is probably related in some fashion.

A letter from Ralph MacDonald Chute to George M. Chute, Jr., dated 25 July 1954 provided more detailed information on the Sidney Chute and Harriet Markle Chute Family, so there have been changed to various family members in that group as a result - the text of the letter was added to his notes section.

Finally, the records of the Robert Chute branch of the Abraham G. Chute - Mary Wilcox line has been corrected, but Abraham still needs to be added to the Hocking, Ohio Chute branch of the family. Part of the problem has been that the family history reported by descendants of this branch has proven to be inaccurate, causing no end of problems. For example, Frances Chute's version differs in many particulars to C.L. Chute's version - which has put the entire line's history under a microscope! This line is still being researched, so don't put much stock into it just yet.

Chris Chute would like to remind everyone not to forget the men and women overseas in the military:

"Please consider sending an email to one or more of our troops, who are possibly overseas doing this nation's dirty work, during this holiday season. This site is geared towards the US Navy and Marines.

Thanks.

Chris

Here is the site: http://anyservicemember.navy.mil/About.html

Thanks, Chris!

Thanks to a large group of Family Data Worksheets submitted by the Rodney Cecil Chute family of Bowdoin, Maine, those records are being updated - they're basically completed, give or take a grandchild or two - the full records should be uploaded by tommorrow.

There's a great word for compiling a record from multiple sources (besides "satisfying") - I think perhaps "kit-bashed" is a good word? (The word is familiar to hobbyists know it as "creating a structure by using pieces from other kits and glueing them all together"). So ... anyway, I "kit-bashed" a record, by using a Civil Registration index entry with two 1881 British Census entries ... giving us the Joseph Chute (of Wolverhampton) family, in its earliest stages - those looking for an Irish Joseph might want to look at this record - that's where he started out.

Speaking of which, a few Chutes have expressed an interest in contributing to Chute family research, so I've added a "Research" section, listing specific (and sometimes general) areas of research needed, for anyone interested in taking it on. It will have lots more than just that one entry - that was just the first one handy.

A combination of the worksheet submitted by Daisy Osborne and the Fort Snelling National Cemetery records have added birth, death and burial information for Alfred Wentzel Chute and wife Florence A. Anderson Chute.

Am finally needing to fill in some of the Allied Families data in working with some of the present Family Data Worksheets, and began with the Deacon David Shook family.

George W. Green, Laverna L. Holland Green, and their children have been updated.

Well, this was a fun week - our old Windows 95 system started to go belly-up, which meant we had the delightful experience of battling the "Day After Thanskgiving Shopping Frenzy", looking for a new one. Came home with an XP and a newly acquired case of a "Day After Thanskgiving Shopping Frenzy Nervous Disorder". Unfortunately, the genealogy software program I was using stopped the production of genealogy software, so I had to switch that, too. Best part was that the driver designed to move files from the old to new systems also stopped working, so I've spent the better part of the week mailing files to myself. I'm still not completely finished, but at least all of the critical (read: "Chute") files have been moved. And may I conclude this annoying whining complaint with a final "Arrrgh!" [<------ blatant pity seeking ploy].

But back to the Chutes.

Reminder!!! If you're sending out Holiday Letters this year, be sure and add me to your mailing list!!

I've also begun to add the Family Group ID Numbers to the web site, on a very slow, haphazard, non-consistent basis -- by that I mean, I've added a line which will tell you the ID number that William Edward Chute (WEC) used, if applicable, the page number George M. Chute, Jr. used (ditto) and the group number I'm using. The ID numbers in some cases reflect at least one individual in the family group, but may not reflect all of them. For example, a page cited in William Chute's book may reflect a parent, but may not reflect the spouse or children. The spouse and SOME children are in George M. Chute's book. The remaining children are in my family group files - bottom line is that just because there is a reference, doesn't mean everyone in the group is covered by every reference, but everyone in the group should be covered by all three of them combined. I'll eventually add a Line Number to that Group ID numbers section, but that will take a while.

Meanwhile - the following records have been changed:

Dora Lou Chute & William E. Johnston. Note that their two children have been added.
Robert Lane Chute & Charlotte Edna Priest. Charlotte had been overlooked when the records were uploaded, but her last name is spelled "Preest" on p. 112 of the GMC supplement. Son Robert Joseph, who submitted the Family Data Worksheet in January of 1962, wrote his mother's maiden name so that it could be interpreted as either "Priest" or "Preest", so I'm recording her under both versions until official confirmation is found. (I think Grandpa George used "Preest" as Robert hadn't dotted the "i" in her name, but he did the same thing on a few other words in the worksheet.

Lydia Ruth Chute & Arthur Hays Kendrick. The change here was the addition of a 1962 residence in Ohio, prior to their move to North Carolina. Robert Joseph gave their address as Montell Avenue in Cincinnati.

Sarah Estella Chute & second husband Nels Nissen. Note the change in the spelling of his name from "Nissan" to "Nissen" - and his birth & death records have been added, courtesy of the Social Security Index.
Arthur Wellington Larson & families. Note the change in the lines between parents and children, based on his second marriage to Tomasine Torgiano. Originally, all four children were attached to Arthur and first wife Cressa Clement Larson; now only Conrad Richard is attached to that marriage, prior to Cressa's death in 1946. Conrad was actually born Conrad Richard Clement, Cressa's son by her previous marriage. Arthur adopted him as an infant; his mother died a year later.
Carl Edward Larson (Sr., Jr., and III have all been updated).
Carol Ann Jacobson (granddaughter of Ocie Ella Chute) and her husband Herman Vogl, Jr., have had their five children added to the web site.
Arnie Smesmo, Sr. and Juliet Larson Smesmo. Source amended.
Patty Lou Smesmo Anderson and Leslie Anderson. Source amended.
Joann Kay Smesmo Guyer and Doyle P. Guyer. Source amended.
Carrie Bell Chute and George Green. Violet May Green and Behrens/Fisher spouses.
Velva Behrens and James McKelvey. Added husband and son.
Lyle C. Green and Tessie Cicero. Note that the surname of his wife has been amended from "Cloero" to "Cicero" and that the data on their two daughters has been updated.

Those with Gedcoms, take note - I inadvertently left out an entire family when I transcribed the data ... so, with my humble apologies to the Robert Sidney Chute family ... which included sons Murray Chute, grandsons Murray LeRoy Chute, Robert William Chute, Lloyd Edgar Chute, Lawrence Victor Chute, Douglas Arthur Chute and granddaughter Shirley Beatrice Chute - not to mention all of their children and grandchildren - they're now up on the web site.

Of course, the reason I noticed the oversight was in locating a batch of family data worksheets and letters from a few of them, and this back-up will be added shortly.

Other source items, and changes to the family group files (typically notations or marriage dates) have been added to the following records:

Sarah Estella Chute & Carl Edward Larson
Daisy Alice Larson
Edgar Eugene Chute and Julia Ulen Chute. A few items from her letters have been added to her notes section.
Leo Raymond Chute
Harold Edward Chute
William Young Chute
Mary Jane Chute and William Jehial Burgess. The Burgess family has graciously allowed us to have one of their photos - of Mary Jane Chute
Laurence Robert Chute
Dale Arlen Chute
Goldie Arlene Chute
Edgar Verne Chute and Rosaline Mae Pettersen. Note the spelling correction in her last name from "Patterson" to "Pettersen."
Marlow Sterling Chute
Jane Eldora Chute
Ura Vernan Wilson Graves. She sent in a collection of responses she received while trying to organize a reunion - one has been transcribed.

A family data worksheet completed by David Prior Chute, Jr. has been added to his records - he also sent along a newspaper clipping from a Los Angeles paper (1950) announcing his daughter Elizabeth's engagement.

The following records have been updated, due to either (a) Malahide Cemetery transcription information, or (b) information gleaned from the New Brunswick Provincial Records database. In most cases, dates of death, birth or marriage have been added; in one case (George Orbin), the name of the spouse was added, and in three (Edna Viola, Atrude Myrtle and Ellen Adelia), the full name of their spouses. The record of Ellen Chute and Ernest Blevins is new, but still needs verification.

Charles Ernest Chute & Tamer McConnell
Wallace G. Chute & Caroline Victoria Chute
Ellen Adelia Chute & Samuel Lee Hemphill
Everett Spurr Chute & Ellen or Helen Graham
Edna Viola Chute & O. Edgar MacDonald
James Abram Chute & Mary Ella Chute
Leland Garfield Chute
Percy Harold Chute
Ruth Ann Chute & Alfred E. Morehouse
Atrude Myrtle Chute & Aaron George Tucker
Harriet Evelyn ("Hattie") Chute & Francis ("Frank") Collins
Cornelia Chute & Harry I. Taylor
Effie B. Chute & Edward Rogers
James Wellington Chute
Ellen Chute & Ernest Blevins
George Orbin Chute & Alice Maud R. Phillips

Wanted to update the Chutes who have checked-in, in one form or another: Julie Lynn McCann, the granddaughter of Tracey Oswald Chute and Mildred Thompson-Chute checked in, to update her family's records - which is terrific, as there are a lot of them! - note that the name of the town has been corrected from "East Hartley" to "North Hatley, Quebec Province, Canada". Brenda Chute, the wife of John F. Chute checked in - John is the older brother of Paul Joseph Chute, who had checked in earlier ... we're now waiting for data worksheets on the Donald Ross Chute line!

I've added a letter to the records of Verne Chute, in which he mentions also writing under the name of Dustin C. Scott, as well as his own name. Note that he has corrected the name of his father from Harris Obelin to Harris Oberlin. Also, in a letter which hasn't been transcribed yet, he provides the name of his wife, Helen Mallman, which has been added to the records. The couple had no children.

Speaking of Verne, George Roger and other Chute authors, I need to add here that my Grandfather also began a rudimentary collection of books which were authored by Chutes - I have in the collection textbooks, short stories and, from my own personal collection, "Up River", which is a collection of photographs of two Maine fishing families - the text for the book was written by Carolyn Chute. Now Carolyn is probably the most famous and prolific author with the name of "Chute" out there, at the moment*, and while I know she married a Michael Chute, from the Maine Chutes, I still can't quite pin down which Michael Chute she married. (I have a good guess going, but it's only a guess). Before I try and locate her by mail (they don't have a phone, I understand), I wonder if anyone out there knows which Michael she married?

The point is: if you have something written by a "Chute", and are thinking of donating it to a library, selling it at a rummage sale, or using it to prop up a lopsided table - first consider donating it to the Chute Family Records. If you're an author yourself, consider a one-copy donation ... send them to me until we've run the records up to Nova Scotia, and then donate it directly to them - it would be a terrific contribution!

(*Among her works: The Beans of Egypt Maine, Snowmen, Letourneau's Used Car Parts, etc. In one article I ran across, she corrected the mispronunciation of the last name, saying, "It's CHute, not SHute!" and thought - yup, she's one of ours, alright - one of these days, I want to do a poll on how many of us promptly correct the mispronounciation, as she did, and how many of us are so used to the hearing "Shute", we just let it slide ...!)

Various additions and changes have been made to the records of:

Nelson Edward Chute. Normally, I don't transcribe the brief covering letters that accompany family data worksheets, but his made reference to a snowstorm, and his car (make & model).

John Marshall Church. I can't provide an original source for this record (yet), but located an undated, handwritten genealogical chart, which identified the connection of Alice Church (previously mentioned) to the Chute family - she was the granddaughter of Nathan Church and Miriam Chute. Alice was mentioned in connection with the mystery surrounding the love triangle surrounding Samuel Hewes Chute and Helen Editha Amelia Day Chute -- remember that the loser had to give the winner a set of gold spoons? The John Marshall Church records are updated to reflect the information on the chart, but I'm still looking for the original source of his data.

Frederick Butterfield Chute. Frederick's covering letter - a very brief one - cracked me up, so I transcribed it -- not only his witty references to "them Chutes" and his closing of "Cousinly yours", but his addition of both his identifying birthdate and a blank "date of death" line seemed to reflect a man with a wry sense of humor.

Henry Morgan Chute. There is some discrepancy on the correct order of his name - he has been listed in official records as both "Morgan H. Chute", and "H. Morgan Chute". "Henry Morgan" appears not only in our records (original source not located yet), and in his military records. "Morgan H. Chute" was his listing in a New either a Jersey phone book or city directory, which had been typed up, undated, and mailed to my grandfather. However, it does appear that he died in World War II, although I haven't located the exact circumstances and date of his death. His military photo has been added to his records, along with his mention in the "World War II Brothers" website. Is anyone out there familiar with the activities and maneuvers of the 331st Infantry, HQ 3rd Battalion during World War II?

I'd asked what the initials "CPR" written next to the name of Bessie Irene Chute's husband Harry K. Ryan, who was a highschool principal, might stand for, and Steve Chute (from British Columbia, so he should know!) answered: The Canadian Pacific Railroad! Of course, the next question would be: now that we know what the initials stood for (thanks, Steve!), why were they written next to his name in the first place? Did the high school pricipal retire and join the CPR? Did he switch jobs mid-career? Did he travel to and from the highschool on the CPR? Was he a railfan whose passion was the CPR? He was run over by a locomotive?

Lee Chute. I do have a few facts about Lee - his birthdate, the fact that he was born outside of Canada (probably in Leola, South Dakota) and the fact that he had moved back into Canada with his parents in time to be recorded as 14 years old in the 1901 Manitoba census. He did get married. I know this because I have a letter dated January 21, 1952, from Dauphin, Manitoba, Canada from his wife. The letter was added to his notes, as she mentions the death of his brother Frank. Unfortunately, I still have no idea who she is or was, as she signed the letter, "Mrs. Lee Chute".

Boy, if that isn't one thing that drives family researchers up the wall - as evidenced by my clutching my head and yelling, "Arrrgh!" when I read that. Anyone out there descended from the Herbert Melburn Chute family, who might know who Lee Chute married?

However, while I was digging around, looking for any records on Lee (found lots on him, none on her, naturally), I ran across:

Karen Lee Chute. A terrific biographical sketch written by Karen's husband Patrick J. Gough for a military web site has been added to the family records - he is a Marine attack helicopter pilot, and Karen, apparently, was a former U.S. National Champion Figure Skater! Which was so interesting, it almost made up for the "Mrs. Lee Chute" signature!

You've already run across Emma R. Baumberger Chute - she's George Roger Chute's mother. I've transcribed one of her letters to her notes section, and you can see at least 50% of the source of her son's outspoken and adventurous personality. The other 50% definitely comes from his father, who apparently was not born "George Washington Chute" at all, but rather "William Edward Chute". Emma includes the reason why he decided to change his name ... the point is that family researchers into this line would do well to search under both names, as he didn't change his name until he was in school. (Note: those who become passionately overheated when the subject turns political, might want to avoid this letter!)

Previously, in our last episode ... er, entry ... I'd asked about the initials next to Charles Lionel Chute's name on his worksheet ("L.C.D.R.) and asked if anyone knew what the initials "L.C.D.R." in U.S. Naval parlance stand for ... I guessed "Lieutenant Commander of Something"; Christopher Chute wrote in:

"I did a search on the web, and came up with 1000s of hits for "LCDR". Near as I can tell, it simply stands for Lieutenant Commander (both US Navy and US Coast Guard), although I never saw it written as "L.C.D.R." ... The search using "L.C.D.R." turned up virtually the identical results as a search for "LCDR"....."

And since he'd know the answer to that if anyone would ... I'm going to go with his answer - the "L.C.D.R." was probably written by someone not familiar with the correct abbreviation for "Lieutenant Commander". Thanks, Chris!

Also, a letter from Lloyd Elmore Chute, who created the L.E. Chute Company in Davenport, Iowa, has been added to his notes.

While trying to hunt down more information on George Roger Chute's story of Ernest Newton Chute's singlehandedly disarming a madman, I found everything EXCEPT the story of Ernest Newton Chute, who, by that description of him, sounds like he would have probably booted most reporters off his property anyway! (I did find his death certificate). The Minnesota State Archives provided birth and death information (as well as photographs) of quite a few Minnesota Chutes, so here is a partial list of the records that have been updated (the rest will follow):

William Dean Chute -- Addition to the family records
William Young ("Willie") Chute

*Note that this is a probable, not confirmed, death record of Elbridge Chute of Scarboro, Maine. For one thing, the time frames match, and for another, we don't have any other Elbridge Chutes! The middle initial, present in the death record, although not in the birth record on file, matches his Samuel Lawrence's middle name. However, keep in mind that this is the first record of Elbridge Chute relocating to Minnesota.

Also - and here's an interesting record - while nosing around in the LDS database last night for a date of death for George Roger Chute himself, I found another George Chute. One of those "submitted by a church member" ones, which couldn't stand up to a light breeze on most days, but here's the record:

George Chute
Death:  03 OCT 1676  Shrewsbury, Monmouth, New Jersey
Marriage:  15 JUL 1626  Bridgwater, Somerset, England

One of the Bridgewater, Somerset Chutes ventured across the Atlantic, or was this a Shute?

Another memorable Chute has surfaced! This alone will convince everyone - if you're doubting - how important the personal biographical data is, in addition to the names and dates ... the only data I had on George Roger Chute was his birth date and place - and the name of his wife - and then I found the collection of letters he wrote to my grandfather. Not your typical letters - he typed them on a teletype, from a cabin on a container vessel - on the back of 1967 weather, gale and "other ships at sea" warnings - in a teletype shorthand I couldn't always translate - I gave it my best shot, though. You'll love this guy - he is a terrific writer (" ... The spectacle, in the dim, midnight spectral light..."), and full of wonderful observations about all of his relatives. Not only can you hear him speaking through his letters, everyone he describes comes alive as well. You'll particularly enjoy the tale he tells about Ernest Chute ... I'm hoping there may be some old newspaper clippings about that incident! They're just a joy to read - I know you'll enjoy them.

He may in fact also be the "G.R. Chute" who wrote "The lily-iron returns to Monterey Bay: shark fishing recommences on a harpoon basis." in 1930 (Calif. Fish. Game 16 (2): 143-152), already recorded in the literary records section.

Added and sourced: a worksheet from Charles Wendell Chute dated 19 April 1961; note the correction in surname from "Martin" to "Martyn" for son Charles Lionel Chute's wife Caroline. Speaking of Charles - does anyone know what the initials L.C.D.R. in U.S. Naval parlance stand for? I'm thinking: "Lieutenant Commander Something-Something" - and those "something-somethings" are probably extremely important to the guy who worked hard to get that appended to his name, so I thought I'd ask a Chute with navy experience. At the time the worksheet was written, he was stationed in Japan. (And I'd sure hate to stick the note that he was a "possible Lieutenant Commander Something Something" in his file!)

Charlton Foster Chute submitted a family data worksheet in 1951. This worksheet, combined with data gleaned from city directories and other sources, have been added to his records. I'm still hoping to hear from one of his descendants - a man with such a strong civil service record combined with a passion for juggling HAD to be a memorable character!

George Melvin Chute created a chart dated 10 May 1950, listing the children and grandchildren of John Roy Chute, and all of that data has been added. Next to the name of sister Bessie Irene Chute's husband Harry K. Ryan, he wrote the initials "CPR" - Harry was a public school principal in the Vienna, Ontario, Canada school system - can anyone let me know what those initials might stand for? Those with Gedcoms note that Nellie Margaret Chute's husband's surname has been changed from Katchebaw to Ketchebaw.

Viola Blanche Glenn, daughter of Grace Evelyn Chute sent in a family data worksheet, although it is undated. Grace is the daughter of Herbert Melburn Chute and Ruth Connor - and had been listed only as an unmarried "Grace" in our records, so her spouse, children and grandchildren have been added to the records. Victor Arthur Chute also submitted a Family Data Worksheet (also undated) sometime in the 1950's, and the data he submitted has been sourced and added.

A letter from Margaret O. Cook provided the names of the grandchildren of William Winsor and Elizabeth Chute, and have been added to the Gedcom. A letter from Frances Mary White Chute provided information on her husband, Edward Gail Chute (or, as he is known to his family, Gail Edward) and sons - as well as an interesting description of his occupation as a tow boat captain. Also in her letter are references to a "Charlie Chute" and a "C.C. Chute" neither of whom I've been able to place - if anyone has an idea who those two might be, let me know. The letter, written in 1952, is in Edward's notes.

Lionel Chute, "Professional Emigrant"?
Date of Addition: Tuesday, November 12, 2002

Back to the question - raised by Walter John Chute's letter - of whether Lionel Chewte was a schoolmaster in Dedham (England) as well as Ipswich, Massachusetts ... there is a hint that he may have been, in Roger Thompson's book Mobility & Migration: East Anglian Founders of New England, 1629-1640, 1994, University of Massachusetts Press.

Both Lionel and Rose appear in the study, Lionel in a chapter about emigrants who were professionals in both locations: England and the American Colonies (and Rose in "Selected Wives of Professionals"). No further information about Lionel is provided (naturally! - and - darn it!), but it does raise the question: why would Rogers assume that Lionel was a professional schoolmaster in both places?

... and to remind everyone of why this is so important - many of Dedham's records have been lost, and we are desperately searching for any record that will connect Lionel's father, Lionel Sr. to Anthony of Kent. If Lionel, Jr. was a schoolmaster in Dedham, there may be records, letters of recommendation, etc., that might provide this information. Until Walter John Chute's letter, the extent of our knowledge of the pre-emigration Lionel Jr., was that he was literate and educated enough to witness various wills in Essex. This is the second suggestion of a pre-emigration profession, although it would certainly make sense - he had to have been doing something other than witnessing wills!

The references Thompson gives for his research on Lionel were: "NEHGR 54 (1900):113; Waters, 2:1201; E.S. Perzel, "First Generation of Settlement in Colonial Ipswich" (Rutgers University Ph.D diss., 1967); Essex Wills."

Vernon Eugene Chute

Vernon Eugene Chute provided the original family data worksheet for his family in 1960, and then updated that information in 1966 - all of the information has been added to the data and notes sections. There may have been further additions to at least his brother James' family after 1966 - if anyone knows this family or how to reach them, I'd love to hear from you. In 1966, they were located mostly in Illinois, although brother Gerald and his family lived in Kokomo, Indiana.

Timothy Lemoine Chute
Date of Check-In: Sunday, 10 November, 2002

I've just heard from Timothy Lemoine Chute, son of Lyndon Lemoine Chute and grandson of Harvey Lyndon Chute of Nova Scotia; those with gedcoms note that Timothy has corrected the spellings of his father's name from "Lindon" (which is the spelling I had) to the correct "Lyndon" - both of those names have been changed. Hopefully, he can fill in the blanks on the rest of his family as well - thanks, Tim!

Andrew Chute Letter
Date of Addition: Sunday, 10 November, 2002

I've uploaded a fascinating letter from Deacon Andrew Chute to his son Alfred - the original is in the possession of David Mace; the copy was provided by Steve Chute. Written in April of 1859, the letter touches upon historical events such as the Austrian - French - Italian war of 1859, the famous Donati comet of 1858, the Millerite Doctrine, and some interesting Chute family history as well. Steve was reminded of this letter, as it indicated a connection - at least by mail - between the Canadian Chutes and Ariel Parish Chute family of Massachusetts - it seems Ariel had written to express an interest in visiting his relations in Canada West, as it was then known.

(... and reactions from the Chute Family)
Date of Addition: Saturday, November 09, 2002

And for the first of the reactions to the good news. (Trust me, there will be more, once Lionel and Steve wake up):

"Three cheers for the finder(s) of the Parchment!!!!!! Isn't it marvelous that such a Chute family treasure of legend has turned up as a treasure in reality? Hoorah again!!!! And three cheers for the Chute and his forebears that preserved it!!!!"
Christopher Chute, Woods Hole, Massachusetts

Really, when you stop and think about how many generations this parchment has passed through, to arrive intact in the present, over 360 years later ... who else can you credit but the family branch that preserved it so diligently? They really do deserve a big "thank you" from all of us ... but how do you adequately say "thank you" for something that tremendous?

I've had a request from a descendant of Joseph McLellan and Dianna Jordan for further information on this line ... her request has been added to the notes section. And if anyone knows how to contact Helen Margaret Chute who married Robert Knight and lives in the Union, Ontario, Canada area (when last heard from), drop us a line - we've heard from a researcher interested in a possible connection between this Robert Knight and an immigrant by the same name who entered Canada from Scotland, around 1900. That request for further information is in their "Notes" section.

The Ralph Flarman Chute family records have been updated, thanks to the research done by August C. ("Buddy") Lindner for the Lindner family, as sourced in the notes; also, a letter to George M. Chute, Jr. from Daisy Alice Larson Osborne in 1967 suggested that the family of Leo Raymond Chute may have in fact, changed their name to the "Shute" spelling, although no further records of this family, under either spelling has been found as yet - if anyone has further information on that branch of the family, we'd love to hear from you.

Daisy also mentioned that Archie Pearl Chute had fourteen children, eleven of them with his first wife. As we only have record of one wife and ten children, we appear to be missing a considerable number of Chutes - if anyone has any knowledge of this family, let me know. In the meanhile, the records of one of his younger sons, Gordon Kenneth Chute and Julia Louise Boyd, have been updated, although two of Gordon's children are still missing.

Research on the Irish "Tuite" family brings up the interesting note that "Tuite" is actually an Anglo-Norman or Norman-French name, possibly based on a place in Normandy - the earliest versions were "de Tuit" or "deTuite" - which struck me as sort of interesting ... the coat of arms is completely different than the earliest "Chute" arms, however; no historical note on when the different coat of arms came into being. If anyone knows how the surname "Tuite" was pronounced in Gaelic, that might be helpful also.

Lionel Chute's Original Pedigree Parchment
Date of Addition: Wednesday, November 06, 2002

... is still with us. Yesterday, I had the incomparable pleasure of hearing from Oliver Swift Chute's daughter, Judith Chandler Chute. Since I can't tell you this any better than she can:

"Jackie, let me make your day ... my cousin Richard Chute has the parchment. I actually have never seen it, but I had heard about it from my father Oliver. He will not loan it out but we will investigate how to make copies. He is bringing it down to show me sometime soon and I am forwarding your E-mail to him. I just talked to him on the phone. He says that the parchment has been framed and we will have to find the best method of copying. I might ask them at NEHGS what's the best thing to do. I know how exciting it must be as I've done some genealogy and get so excited when I find something."

(She's not kidding - I had to clamp both hands over my mouth when I got her e-mail, being in the office at the time.)

As quickly as I would love to get a photo of it up here on the web site, I also know that photographing something that fragile can also hurt it, exposing it to a sudden bright light, and that there are safe (or certainly safer) ways of doing it. We've waited this long tracking down this precious family heirloom - waiting a little while longer to make sure it isn't damaged in the process of photographing it is the least we can do!

... a tidbit from the Colby College Alumni Magazine about a note written by Oscar Moody Chute to his great-grandson at birth; an amusing story of Sir John Chute and friends designing clever heraldic coats of arms for two rival gaming clubs, parts of which he stole from his own, ("the crest, an arm out of an earl's coronet shaking a dice-box; and the motto, "Cogit amor nummi" -- "The love of money compels") as opposed to a hand holding the broken sword ... the obituary of Earle Stanley Chute of California and Wichita Falls, Texas, has provided the names of two of his grandchildren, who have been added to the family records ... the obituary of Charlotte R. O'Connor Chute, wife of Leroy James ("Roy") Chute also provided a list of childen not recorded earlier ... a mention of the Reverend Edward Lane Chute in the record of the efforts of the Town of Conway to hold an anniversary celebration has been added to his notes ... the professional resume of Russell Newton Chute has been added to his notes, although there is no mention of his wife or children ...

Do these names ring a bell with anyone? Can't find a Chute to connect this terrific story to:

"A Romantic Wedding: Kenneth Chute, formerly of this place, now of Cornucopia, was married Sunday evening, June 30th, to Miss Bessie May Blevins of Denver, Colorado, Mr. Fleming Goss, Mr. Chute's brother-in-law acting as best man. The necessary witnesses were the only other persons present at the ceremony which, using the words of the bridegroom, was performed "where the trail winds over the mountainside, overlooking the panorama of Pine and Eagle Valleys, of an altitude of over seven thousand feet."

"My costume," continues Mr. Chute, "was the costume of the camp, flannel shirt, corduroy trousers and high shoes." Miss Blevins dressed in Kahaki, in which, I assure you, she looks splendid. This is in keeping with my ideas and temperament."

... I assume we're looking for a Kenneth born circa 1900 or earlier ... and a Bessie who apparently looked "splendid" in khaki, although we're left unsure if climbing 7,000 feet dressed in it, and panting out her wedding vows was in keeping with her ideas and temperament, or not.
