Notes on James Edward Chute and Sara Matilda Foster Chute:

WEC: "He was a merchant at Bear River. He sold out there and moved to Salem, Mass., in 1855, and went into the shoe business. At the close of the war they moved to Boston, where his wife died April 11, 1890, aged 71. For more than twenty years, Mr. Chute was an agent, for a manufacturing firm in Boston and travelled extensively in more than twenty of the United States and most of the British Provinces. He lived some with his son-in-law, Foster, in Peterboro, N. H."

In the 1861 Salem, Massachusetts City Directory, James Edward Chute is recorded as living on Tremont, and working as a carpenter. In the same directory, Calvin, also a carpenter, is living on Barr, James E., at 17 Barr, is working as a shoestitcher, and Joseph B., a building mover, is living at 3 Mechanic.

Notes on Handley Chute, Hannah Chute and Martha Phinney Chute:

"Handley ... born December 13, 1790, married Hannah, daughter of Benjamin and Martha (Foster) Chute, by Rev. Thomas Ansley, January 13, 1814, and lived at Chute Cove, since called Hampton, and was a good Christian, citizen, farmer, miller and neighbor. His wife died July 1, 1826, aged forty-two; he married, 2nd, Martha Phinney7 (James6, Zaccheus5, Benjamin4, John3, John2, John1) of Scituate about 1630, by Rev. William Elder, October 16, 1826; and died Jan. 24, 1857; she received a paralytic stroke of the lower limbs, in 1837; and walked no more for thirty years, but bore it all with Christian fortitude, dying happy in the Lord Jesus, October 10, 1868, aged sixty-four."
