Notes on Donald Zenas Chute and Florence Kathryn Denniss Chute:

Letter from Donald Zenas Chute to George Maynard Chute, Jr.

Somme, Sask.
Apr 22, 1966

Dear Mr. Chute:

I received your letter and was pleased to hear from another Chute.

My Uncle Roll who lived in Vancouver, British Columbia traced the Chute history back to to the time of Henry VIII of England and had it printed up in book form before he died. I have this book but it needs to be brought up to date.

Uncle Noble, Aunt Goldie and Aunt Nell are the only older Chutes now living.

I am farming here at Somme, Saskatchewan, have been here 34 years this spring. My wife had an operation on her hip about 2 months ago and is not home yet, but is coming along okay.

Sincerely,

Donald Zenas Chute
22 Apr 1966

We'd be interested to know if anyone out there has a copy of the book compiled by Roland Arthur Chute and mentioned by his nephew, Donald Zenas Chute.

Note    N52-825         Back to Index        Back to Thor Smesmo Ocie Ella Chute Smesmo.
Notes on Thor Smesmo Ocie Ella Chute Smesmo:

William Edward Chute listed her as "Ella Orie", which is not confirmed by any subsequent records. However, two sources mention her having a twin brother, Edgar Orie Chute, which is no doubt the source of the confusion. Official records of his birth or death dates have not yet been located.

According to George Maynard Chute, Jr., "One son, Archie Pearl Chute, was raised by her father, Arthur Wellington Chute." Archie Pearl Chute was never known as "Smesmo", so his paternity is uncertain.

Note    N52-832         Back to Index        Back to Lawrence Edward Chute.
Notes on Lawrence Edward Chute:

Sudden Death: Coraki Amateur Boxer"

"Lawrence Edward Chute (18), second son of Mr. and Mrs. Percy Chute, well-known residents of Coraki, collapsed and died in hospital three hours after a boxing contest with another young man at the Coraki stadium on Saturday night.

Lawrence Chute gained a victory over another boxer named G. Thomas and after a shower bath returned to the stadium to witness the completion of the programme. He complained of feeling ill and soon after admission to the Campbell hospital became unconscious.

Chute was born in Brisbane and was a popular official at the Coraki Post Office, where he was employed for about four years. He was secretary of the Coraki branch of the Hibernian Society, nmembers of which will attend his funeral this morning in regalia. An inquest will be held at Coraki on Wednesday."

Source: Coraki newspaper photo item, name and date unknown. Photo of clipping provided by John William Chute.

This does not match family records, which have his age at death as 20, and not 18. Family records also have him born in Bundarra and not Brisbane.

Notes on William Chute/Shute and Hannah Carter Chute:

Around the time of the American Revolution, William Shute changed the family name from Shute to Chute. As "Shute" was a fairly common spelling of the family name, we are still seeking to connect this family to the earlier Chute-Chewte line. According to "The History of Casco, Maine", he changed the name from Shute to Chute around 1775. However, military records contradict this; he was still "Shute" when discharged from the military, after fighting the Revolutionary War:

"Shute, William, Scarborough. Capt. Abram Tyler's co., Col. Edmund Phinney's regt.; roll dated Scarborough, Oct. 25, 1777, showing men entitled to allowance for travel to headquarters at Cambridge and billeting before marching during Dec., 1775, and subsequent to Jan. 1, 1776; enlisted Jan 1776; said Shute credited with 120 miles travel and 10 days billeting; also, there is a Private, same co. and regt.; muster roll dated Garrison at Fort George, Dec. 8, 1776; enlisted [p.189] Jan. 22, 1776; also, a Corporal, Capt. Benjamin Larrabe's co., Col. Mitchel's regt.; marched July 9, 1779; discharged Sept. 12, 1779; service, 2 mos. 3 days; company marched on Penobscot expedition."

On Saturday, January 31, 2004, an e-mail was received concerning this family:

Subj: Lucy Bryant Shute third great grandmother
Date: 1/30/2004 7:41:35 AM Eastern Standard Time

I was so happy to find your Chute Family web site this am. I feel my ggg gm must go there someplace. Hoping.

This suggests a connection between John Alder Chute, with wife Ellen Bryant, and the William Chute/Shute and Hannah Carter Chute family that deserves further research.
