Notes on John Ignatius Chute.

Notes for JOHNNY IGNATIUS CHUTE: Died of burst appendix. Ben Harrer remembers that Uncle Johnny died of a "botched operation" after an appendectomy when he was preschool age, about 1927-8, somewhere 'up north'.** (A John Ignatius Chute, 37, died in Weber Co, Utah in 1935 on June 2.) He had a girlfriend name Claire Warner, who was called "Aunt Claire" and was nurse. Claire had a daughter named Patty, whose father was Dr. Berger. (Cindy) ** John Ignatius Chute appears in a census at the age of 22, so he is remembering someone else.

"Nanetta Black died of influenza when Donald Edward was two weeks old. There was an influenza epidemic, which took the lives of thousands during the early 1900's. Due to my grandfather's inability to care for the family and tend the farm, he found it necessary to break up his family. Glenna was placed in the home of another relative, I'm unaware of who that relative was. I know she lived in Springfield, Illinois until adulthood, never returning to the Chute family unit. Glenna married Roland Stead and they made their home in Lombard, Illinois, and then retired in Tucson, Arizona where they remained until their death. They had two children, Barbara and Ivan."

"With William Teed, she [Barbara Ione Stead] also had Douglas Alan Teed and Sandra Louise Teed. There was another child, Sharon, but she died at the age of 2 and I don't remember her middle name. They were all born in Illinois. My dad's father died which is why Grandma remarried. Her second husband's name was Owen Joseph Clark. Together, they had a son named Owen Joseph Clark Jr. Owen Clark adopted my dad and his siblings so their last names are Clark and it is also my maiden name, not Teed. But you can leave the last names as Teed. My Grandma has 16 grandchildren altogether, so I don't think you want all of that info! She was actually married 3 more times after Owen, but that's a long story."

"I have recently developed some new information on Mabel Augusta Lawrence, who was my great-grandmother and the first wife of Arthur Harris Chute. Mabel was the daughter of William Abner Lawrence of Ashburnham, Worcester, Massachusetts and Mary Ella Bixby of Rindge, Cheshire, New Hampshire. Mabel was born on 16 June 1877 in Ashburnham, Worcester, Massachusetts and died on 24 April 1945 in Winchendon, Worcester, Massachusetts. She is buried at The Old Cemetery in Ashburnham. Mabel was first married on 03 January 1898 in Ashburnham to Arthur Harris Chute (1875-1957). The only child of this marriage was Edward Abbott Chute (1898-1948). This marriage ended in divorce in October of 1905. Mabel married second to Leon Francis Harris (1887-1965) of Ashburnham about 1912. Leon was a son of Charles F. Harris and Alicia Farmer. There were no known children from this marriage. Arthur Harris Chute relocated to California between 1907 and 1910, along with his son, Edward, his mother, Adline Burgess-Chute and his second wife, Mabell Edith Babbitt-Maynard, whom he married on 24 December 1906 in Fitchburg, Worcester, Massachusetts. There were no known children from this marriage."

Notes on Reverend Richard A. Chartier, Jennie (surname unknown) Chartier and Grace Robertson Williams Chartier.

Obituary, The Reverend Richard A. Chartier

The Reverend Richard A. Chartier, 80, a Poughkeepsie resident since 2000, as husband to Grace Robertson Williams, died Wednesday night, May 26, 2004 at Vassar Brothers Medical Center. His family is appreciative of the attention received there. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Poughkeepsie.

Richard Chartier was born on Dec. 10, 1923 in Wakefield, Mass., to Arthur Chartier and Ada Chute. He was educated in the Wakefield public schools, graduating from Wakefield High School in 1941. He received a B.A. degree from Ottawa University (Kansas) in 1950 and a M.A. and M. Divinity from Boston University. United Methodist Church Missionary, Interdenominational Pastor, Champion of Social Justice Causes, and University Professor, Mr. Chartier had a lifelong involvement in a wide variety of local, national, and international organizations concerned with issues of peace, justice, human rights, and socio-economic well being.

Mr. Chartier lived through many of the challenging events of modern history. Those who heard him speak vividly remember his personable style, rich command of language and classical references, frequent anecdotes, but most of all, his purposefulness and sincerity. He served from 1973 to 1977 in various capacities in Massachusetts, community college teacher, 'supply' preacher, mental health researcher, and writer.

Richard Chartier was editor of Fellowship (magazine of the Fellowship of Reconciliation) in Nyack, N.Y., between 1977 to 1982 and was director of the Lysle Fellowship Program of Intercultural Education in conjunction with Rockland Community College from 1983-1985. He was the author of many published articles in both English and Spanish, and became a Spanish-English interpreter during years in Argentina as a United Methodist missionary making an important contribution to the social awareness of Methodism in that country, and sharing with English-speaking Christians the Latin-American point of view. An ordained minister of the American Baptist Churches, U.S.A., from 1985 to 1991, he served as part-time pastor of the Croton Falls Community Church and from 1991 to 1997 as a part-time pastor of Cold Spring Baptist Church. He served as an adjunct professor at Dutchess Community College from 1993 to 2003.

He is survived by his wife, Grace Robertson Chartier, at home. He is survived by his children, their mother, Jennie, their spouses, and grandchildren: Anne and her husband, James Oakley of Ashland, Wis., Elizabeth and her sons, Cristobal and Santiago Gomez of Brookline, Mass; Ricardo Chartier, Gabriela Carmuega, and grandchildren, Ricardo Arturo, Maria, Jose Ignacio, in Juanico, Canelones, Uruguay, Carlota and her partner, Rheba Rutkowski of Revere, Mass.; stepson, Eric C. Williams survives in Plano, Texas. He is also survived by an older brother, Raymond Chartier of Ocala, Fla., whose wife, Bea, died in 2002; and brother-in-law, Neil K. Robertson survives in Pebblebeach, Calif. He was predeceased by a sister, Elizabeth Hayden Chartier and her husband, Robert Hayden. There are ten nieces and nephews, and numerous grandnieces and grandnephews. A memorial service will be held at the First Baptist Church of Poughkeepsie in early June. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to the First Baptist Church of Poughkeepsie, Doctors Without Borders, or Bread for the World. Arrangements by Clinton Funeral Home of Cold Spring, New York.

Note    N90-1706         Back to Index        Back to Roland/Rolland Patrick ("Tony") Chute, Catherine Neville Chute and Philomena O'Quigley Chute.

Notes on Roland/Rolland Patrick ("Tony") Chute, Catherine Neville Chute and Philomena O'Quigley Chute.

From Lara Gordon, wife of Thomas Chute, in an e-mail dated 8 JAN 2007:

"My husband is a Chute from Listowel, Ireland - Thomas Chute. Here's his family info:

Father: Rolland Chute
Mother: Philomena Chute
Sisters: Mary Francis, Marcella, Anne
Brothers: John, Martin, Gerrard

Also, Rolland went to the U.S. during or just after World War II and stayed there for 14 years. Mary Francis was born before he left, the rest after he came back. So we think there may be half siblings in or near Boston.

If you have any info to share with us that would be great!"

This extended family was pieced together when she added, "I just noticed the info on Jed Chute listed under Tralee. This is Tom's half Uncle. He (Jed) is his father's half brother. I know this is the same person as I've met him and Pauline."

With this, the former "P. O'Quigley", wife of Rowland Chute III was transformed into Philomena T. O'Quigley, married to Roland/Rolland/Rowland "Tony" Chute, with a straight line of ascent back to Alexander Chewte and the Main Line. Also, this information coincided with a passenger record between either Ireland or Southhampton and the Port of New York in 1946. Rolland was not on the same passenger list and may have arrived earlier.

Note    N90-1707         Back to Index        Back to Andrew Chute and Ann ("Annie") (surname unknown) Chute.

Notes on Andrew Chute and Ann ("Annie") (surname unknown) Chute.

In the 1890 census, Andrew Chute describes his occupation as a "torpedo dealer". I at first questioned this as being a viable occupation in the 1880's, but it appears that "originally the word referred to any explosive charge, including the weapon now known as a submarine mine. The first modern torpedo (1866) carried an 18-lb (8-kg) charge of dynamite in its nose and was powered by a compressed-air engine driving a single propeller; its range was 200–700 yards (180–640 m)."

Andrew Chute may very well have been a torpedo dealer, although this would make him the first Chute thus far to claim this as his occupation. It may have been a quite legitimate occupation, but the dates also coincide with two other trends: (1) the growth of a strong intercontinental relationship between groups in Ireland and the United States, raising funds and weapons for Irish nationalism and (2) a very strong anti-Irish racism in the United States, making the possibility that he was working in a government or military sales capacity somewhat remote. 1880 would have marked the shift in power from the Fenian Brotherhood of America to its successor, Sinn Féin. In any event, let's hope he wasn't storing his inventory in the basement because, coincidentally (it is fervently hoped), the Chute family home at 11 High Street in Bradford is no longer standing.

Looking for Andrew Chute's back through the years of census records in New York State brought me to an Andrew Chute, aged 15, with the estimated birth year of 1845 in New York, working as a laborer on his father's farm in Java Center, Wyoming County, New York (southeast of Buffalo). His record in 1880 at age 36 and living in Bradford, Pennsylvania set his estimated birth year at 1844, so the records matched in birth year and state.

Andrew Chute of Java, Wyoming, New York (father was Thomas; mother named Rose, both born in Ireland) had several older siblings at the time of the 1860 census: Bridget (aged 19) and James (aged 18).

There were two other Chute families, living next door: the first family contained Nicholas, Bridget and Elizabeth; the second family contained James, Mary and Margaret. The next family that pops up, living next door to James, Mary and Margaret consisted of: Thomas, Mary, Barnard and James KIRWIN. A short distance away was another KIRWIN family, consisting of Patrick, Catherine, Thomas, Ann (aged 14 at the time), Bridget, Margaret and Frances.

The theory now is that Andrew Chute of Bradford was very probably the brother of the James Chute-Anna Kerwin (or Kirwin) family of upstate New York, and that both James and Andrew were sons of Thomas and Rose who were born in Ireland. The theory also is that Thomas Kirwin (aged 52) who lived next door to a line of Chute families, was the older brother of Patrick Kirwin (aged 50), who had a daughter Ann, who is probably our known Anna Kerwin. So far, no emigration record has been located for either Thomas or Rose Chute.

The families mentioned above are captured in the table below. The first KIRWIN family would be headed by the uncle of Anna Kirwin; the second Kirwin family is Ann/Anna Kirwin/Kerwin, her parents and siblings.

James Couture's electronic database on Ancestry.com contains the following detail on this family:

"Information from Christine Chute of Salem, Oregon. Paper written by Harold E. Chute. Cremated ashes put in Pacific Ocean. Lived in Oak Park, Illinois. Was studying to be a chiropractitioner but for some reason gave that up and became involved in real estate. Went to Minnesota for yearly vacations. Avid fisherman. Moved to Oregon. Next, moved to Bakersfield, Colorado. Frank continued to build houses and Effie continued teaching. After retirement moved to Laguna Hills, CA.

Effie graduated from Aitkin High School in 1914. Soon after graduation she moved to Illinois to became a school teacher. Went to live in Aurora, Colorado near her son after her husband's death. Died age 93. Lived with her daughter in Seattle, Washington for many years. Her ashes were interred along her husband's grave."

"Bakersfield, California" is more likely. It is uncertain if "daughter" is actually her daughter-in-law, as no record of a daughter has been located. However, her younger sister Mabel did live in Seattle, Washington until her death. Also, as her husband's ashes were reported here to be scattered at sea, it is not known if there is an actual cemetery gravesite.

Dear Mr. Chute,

Received your card recently. The correct spelling for Skarpol is "Skarphol". Did I mention the death of their son Robert in Vietnam? Will remind his mother to get her information sent to you soon.

Harold Chute's daughter's name is Dianne Marie, they now reside in Concord, California, so see them often. Jo Ann Smith's birthdate is [Private].

Laurie's second name is Gena, born [Private] to June Arlene Smith.

I'm writing the Skarphols and Mrs. Osborne to remind them, they may have written by now and it went astray as so often happens these days. So glad you are keeping well and enjoying being retired. You have some good hobbies.

As ever,

Mrs. Ruth (Moe) Chute

Notes on Nicholas Chute and Joane Harris Chute.

"The RECTORY estate was held by St. John's hospital, Bridgwater, from 1285 until the Dissolution. (fn. 79) In 1535 it was charged with the maintenance of five boys at school in the hospital. (fn. 80) The estate also included land and offerings at Holowell chapel. (fn. 81) The Crown leased it in 1553 to Nicholas Chute, formerly the hospital's tenant, (fn. 82) and sold it in 1560 to Ralph Bosseville. (fn. 83) Bosseville presumably sold it to Nicholas Halswell, who died in possession in 1564. (fn. 84) Robert Halswell, son of Nicholas, died in 1570 and was succeeded by his son Sir Nicholas (d. 1633). Henry Halswell, second son of Sir Nicholas, (fn. 85) sold the rectory, which included 40 a. of land, in 1634 to John Bourne (d. 1656) of Gothelney in Charlinch. His widow Elizabeth (d. 1660) was succeeded by her son Roger (d. 1672–3). Roger's daughter Florence died in 1673 and the eventual heir was Roger's brother Gilbert (d. 1686). Gilbert's son Edmund (fn. 86) (d. 1695) settled the rectory with Sandford manor on his wife Anne. The rectory descended with Sandford; (fn. 87) it included 43 a. in 1754 (fn. 88) and 36 a. in 1823. (fn. 89) John Cridland was in 1841 awarded a rent charge of £200 in lieu of the great tithes. (fn. 90)"

Jackie's Note: The hospital itself - not a hospital in the sense that we now use the word, but more of a poorhouse - may no longer have existed at this time. The rectory itself would have been connected to the Parish of St. Mary. For a history of The Hospital of St John the Baptist in Bridgwater, see http://www.friarn.co.uk/StJohn/. I am unsure as to what is meant by the description of Nicholas a former "tenant" of the Hospital, as the poorhouse itself appears to have been torn down.

Dear Cousin,

Yes, we were really surprised but really thrilled to hear from you. I remember hearing you folks talking about working on the Chute genealogy the last time we attended the Chute reunion.

Maybe Wilma can give you more accurate data on our Dad than I can. I don't even remember our Mother, but do remember Dad some. I believe he was born in Rushville, Illinois in 1885. Died in 1917, in Hamilton, Illinois.

My husband Harlan was born Nov. 15, 1901 at Camden, Illinois. I was born Nov 28, 1907 at Rushville or in Schuyler County. We were married in Versailles, Ill. July 11th 1926. Yes we celebrated our Silver Anniversary last July.

Our first baby, a little girl, Doris Evelyn, was born Sept. 14, 1930 in Mr, Sterling and passed away Sept 15th 1930. We we didn't keep her with us long. Shortly after her death I had a dream or vision or something & saw my Mother holding our baby girl in Heaven. Made me feel better anyway.

Our son - Richard Harlan - was born Feb 22nd 1933 in Paris, Illinois. That is all of our family but our son is a wonderful boy & now we are so worried about Uncle Sam taking him. He will be 19 next month.

Wilma my sister and I married brothers & now we live about 60 miles apart. She is just 2 years older than I and she has 5 grandchildren. She has 2 wonderful boys.

We do want one of the books when they are finished. Do hope this information is what you need.

Sincerely,

Harlan, Mildred & Richard Heitz

Dear Sir,

Sorry to have been so late in getting the information to you but writing and I were never great pals.

It must be rather interesting to follow the various branches of the family and no doubt there are many of them since the last genealogy was printed.

Hope you will be able to read the writing, and if there is any information I can give would be glad to.

Am employed by the Maine Highway Commission where I have been for thirty-one years. Am a foreman mechanic. My boys are both employed with the Maine Highway Department, one in the garage, the other with the Engineering Div of Bridge Dept. Both live in Augusta.

You must find a number of fairly nearby relatives who you have not previously known of. Hope this information will help you out and any further help I can give you I will gladly.

With best regards to you and family,

Dear Mr. Chute:

Your letter of recent date rec'd. Your record of the Chute family is quite interesting. Otis has asked me to write this letter along with the information we were able to give. You may be interested to know Otis had three half sisters, one of whom is still living. She is Minnie Chute Dorkindoff, in U.S.A. (Saugus, Mass.); the others were Jessie Chute and Effie Chute McGranahan, Jessie never married and died quite young. I am sending you the address of Laura's eldest daughter if you wish to write to her for names of her sisters and brothers. Laura died a few years ago. Uncle Joe Chute had four daughters but no sons, have sent an address of one daughter. If you should care to write, we would be interested to know which one of the Chute brothers you are descended from.

Re: Uncle William R., one of his daughters married Geo McGill Sr. At that time they lived in Middleton, N.S. Since Mr. McGill passed away we have never heard where the widow lives.

Elizabeth Reynolds, sister of Charles L. Chute is at present living near us at Kingston, N.S. No doubt she could help you some with Chute records.

Hope this information will be of some help to you.

Sincerely,

Correspondence, Joseph Herman Chute to George M. Chute, Jr.

April 6, 1951

Dear Mr. Chute:

I'm really ashamed of not getting this information to you earlier. It seems that my group aren't very good at answering letters, and it was some time before I received the information from my aunt. As you will see from this list, there are only eight of the nineteen children still living. I only know the exact address of four of them. I will give you their addresses and you might get additional information by writing them and in the meantime if I can get any I will forward it to you.

You don't know how much I appreciate the information you have already given me concerning my family. The information which you gave me on George Alexander Chute checks, as you can see, with George Tupper Chute from his family Bible. I wonder why he used an alias? None of his children whom I have talked to seem to know who their grandfather was.

After receiving your first letter I went to the Library but was unable to find the 1894 book on the Chute family. However, I did find the Chute name in a genealogy book. It was a Captain Lionel Chute who came to Massachusetts in 1639. I returned home quite disappointed because I didn't find any Nova Scotia Chutes. You can imagine what a surprise it was to me when I received your letter and found that we are descendants of that same man. Our folks might not have come over on the Mayflower but they were right on her stern.

I am passing this information on to my sister Eunice in Germany and asking her to check on Lionel Chute if she visits England this summer and see if she can trace the name further back. I have been told, but can't remember by whom, that the name goes back to William the Conquerer.

I hope his information proves helpful to you. Sorry I can't give you more at this time.

Sincerely yours,

Joseph H. Chute

PS: Enclosed are photostatic copies of Birth, Marriage and Death dates according to record in the George Alexander Chute (alias George Tupper Chute) Bible. Pleae return them when you are through with them.

Dear Mr. Chute,

Received your letter some time ago, and I am Earle's mother and I have filled out the papers you sent my son. Hope it will help out in your information desired.

My son's father was born in Nova Scotia, son of Sea Captain Eaton Chute; has two sons and a daughter: Harold D., Morris W amd Nellie E.

Would you please inform me where I could obtain the old book "Chute Family in America". Would like very much to read it. My son is overseas just now, he's been in Navy for nearly fourteen years.

Would like to hear from you again.

Sincerely yours,

Nellie S. Chute
North Str., North Reading, Mass.

On Family Data Worksheet: (in response to question: "Is Nellie E. older than Morris?") I think so. I think [she married] a Mr. Langill or Longill but you could write my Aunt Stella and she would know:
Mrs. David Kearns
Hampton, Annapolis County,
Nova Scotia
Earle's address:
19 Brandon Ave
Dorchester 20, Mass. Apt 134.

Dear Mr. Chute:

No doubt you will be surprised to hear from me, I am Ronald Chute's sister. One day Ronald told me of receiving your letter requesting data on the Chute Family. He said he was not very interested in that genealogy of families and did not know anything about the subject at all. I told him I would try to see what I could do for you, for as you say, if someone does not keep the history up to date, all true continuity will be lost.

There is a retired Doctor living in Caledonia, he is a McLeod from a good old line and in the last few years since his retirement he has been delving into the family history of some of the families who came as pioneers to this district, and among them was the name of Chute. The Chutes were not strictly pioneers as this District was settled by Scotchmen and one Irishman, but one of the pioneers was Alexander Spears, and my grandfather, John W. Chute, married Elizabeth, their (Alexander and Charlotte Spears)'s daughter. Dr. McLeod had written to Rev. C. L. Chute for some data on the Chute family. This I have obtained and am enclosing a copy for you which I trust will be of some help to you in your work. I also had a little information myself taken from Nova Scotia History briefs, which I am also passing on to you. I have filled in the names and dates on the paper which you sent to be completed.

I have been interested in the family history and have some information on the Spears line which would be my Grandmother Chute's family, you may be interested to know that this family came direct from Scotland, i.e.,

Robert Spears and his wife Margaret were from Aberdeen, Scotland and their family were: Martha, Alexander and Robert. Alexander came from Scotland to Liverpool, N.S. and married Charlotte, daughter of Captain Benjamin Freeman of Liverpool, N.S. Their daughter Elizabeth married John W. Chute, so you can see I have some Scotch blood as well as English.

My Grandmother on my Mother's side was a Freeman, and I have that line back to the Mayflower, or I should say, the Pilgrims who landed in Plymouth, Mass on the "MAYFLOWER".

I trust this information which I am sending you will help in some way and if in the future I can be of any help to you I will be only too glad to do what I can. I should like very much to hear from you again.

Wishing you all of the best in 1952,

I am,

Sincerely yours,

(Mrs. Rita Parker)

    May 2, 1961

    Dear Mr. Chute,

It is rare indeed when we have the pleasure to hear from another "Chute" family so far away, and I am happy to enclose all the information that I have available at this moment.

I only regret that I cannot do more to help you ... perhaps I can. I do, for instance, know that there is another Chute family in Montreal, one in Sherbrooke and one not too far away from Sherbrooke. However, I would prefer not to disturb these people if you have already contacted them.

I believe there are also some "Chutes", cousins of mine, in the Hamilton, Ontario district. If by contacting these people I can be of help to you, please let me know.

As you will have noted on the form which you supplied, I have not filled in the part pertaining to Uncles and Aunts. This I will do as soon as possible and forward them to you.

I have been aware for some time that a book about the Chute family existed. However, this is the first time that I know of anyone who has any direct information.

I would be interested, needless to say, in procuring a copy or copies of this book, if there are any available. If you know anything about this, would you be kind enough to inform me.

Again, I wish to repeat my offer. I will be very happoy to give you any assistance I can. Please call on me.

Thank you for your letter and O hope that I shall hear from you in the not too distant future.

    Sincerely,

    Paul Chute

Notes on Leo J. James and Harriette Louise Barclift James:

The birth location of Leo James was originally given as "Rollo, North Dakota", but, with the exception of the connection between Fargo, North Dakota and Rollo the Norman Viking, there is no record of Rollo, North Dakota. Pending further research into the original information source, I'm making the assumption that his birthplace was actually Rollo, DeKalb County, Illinois, USA, unless an error was made in a North Dakota birth location.
