| Middlesex, Great Britain: Chiswick, Greater London | Chaloner Chute | 1650 | "The church of Chiswick is a vicarage in the patronage of the dean and chapter of St. Paul's, who are ordinaries of the place, it being exempt from the bishop's jurisdiction. In the survey before mentioned (fn. 100) , of the churches and manors belonging to the dean and chapter of St. Paul's, (taken about the year 1245,) the inquisition relating to this parish says, that the church of Sutton (meaning, I suppose, Chiswick) was in the demesne of the canons, who received from it ten shillings per annum by the hands of the lessee. It paid also thirteen pence under the name of synodals. The lessee collected the Peter's-pence, which he received to his own use. The glebe land belonging to the church was 16½ acres of arable, and one of meadow; all free land (fn. 101) . The church had also a third part of the tithes both great and small, of the demesnes, and of the treasurer's demesnes; and all the tithes of both townships, except those of hay (fn. 103) ... Another survey, taken in 1650, values the rectory at 100l; it was then in the occupation of Mr. Chaloner Chute (fn. 108)." Source: Parliament. Surveys, Lamb. MS. Lib. | Norfolk, Great Britain: Diss | Unknown Chute | 1588 | "At Wortham Hall, near Diss, in Norfolk, the seat of the late Major Betts, there is a fine panel portrait of a "well- preserved" old gentleman of seventy, believed by the owner to be that of Philip Chute. It is described as having "above the left shoulder a medallion of a warrior with a drawn sword, while above the right are the arms and crest of Chute, with the scroll Fortune De Guerre. On the frame of the medallion is faintly inscribed, Anno D'ni 1588 ; tetatis suœ LXX." The royal arms are in the corner. From the date 1588, it is plain that this portrait cannot have been painted in the lifetime of Philip Chute, the Standard Bearer. There is no existing memorial of him in Appledore Church." |

Clutes may have preceeded the Chutes into the Schenectady and Albany areas of upstate New York; confirmation is always needed to ensure that you are looking at a Chute record and not a Clute record, particularly as penmanship by recorders or transcribers was not always consistent. In fact, it may be that the Anne Chute and Johannes Quackenbas marriage record may have been an Anne Clute; she was recorded as a Chute, however.
According to the Schenectady Public Library, which coordinated the History and Genealogy segment of the city's official web site, "There were three individuals of this name who early became residents of Albany or Niskayuna, — Capt. Jan, his nephew Johannes and Frederick Clute."
