YORKSHIRE AND LANCASHIRE FAMILY INTERESTS

BOOTH, PEMBERTON, PINDER, KELLY & BELL

My Yorkshire and Lancashire links start with my Grandmother, Nellie Catherine Bell (nee Booth), she married Stanley Bell in 1925 at St.Mary's Parish Church, Walkely, Sheffield, the son of William Bell and Ruth Cordingley. He was born in 1901 at Belgrave Place, Manningham, England and died in 1962.(That's another story entirely on the bottom of this page).

Nellie was born in 1905 at 12 Palm Street, Eccleshall, North Sheffield, daughter of Robert Booth and Ernestina Pemberton and died at Leamington Spa, Warwickshire in 1988. Robert and Ernestina are on the 1901 census for Sheffield with their 7 children. A bit too early for my Grandmother born in 1905.

By the time my Grandmother was born in 1905, the rest of the family was grown up and married. Her mother, Ernestina died at a relatively young age and my Grandmother was brought up by her elder sister and her Grandmother a Mrs Chapman-Booth who, by all accounts owned a shop in Sheffield and had servants.

Robert Booths parents were George Booth and Harriett Pinder a forgeman or blacksmith by trade who resided at Totley, Dronfield, now in Lancashire but was once a part of Eccleshall Bierlow, Sheffield.

"TOTLEY, a township in the parish of Dronfield, hundred of Scarsdale, county Derby, 3 miles N.W. of Dronfield, and 3 S.W. of Sheffield. It is situated near the river Sheaf, on the road from Bakewell to Sheffield. There are several stone quarries and brick-kilns, and a thin seam of coal is wrought."

Ernestina's parents were John Pemberton a Journeyman Woodturner and Ivory Stainer, son of Daniel Pemberton and Catherine Gardner born 1835 in Liverpool, Lancashire, resided in Church Alley, Liverpool and Anne Jane Kelly born also in 1835 in Liverpool, daughter of William and Ann Kelly.

Ernestina married Robert Booth in Manchester and Robert was a cabinet maker on the 1891 census and general labourer on the 1901 census.

The couple had a large family of 8 children, Samuel 1883, Elizabeth 1881, William 1887, Thomas 1888, Bertha 1890, Joseph 1893, Annie 1896 and Nellie Catherine (my Grandmother) in 1905.

Stanley Bell (my Grandfather on my mother's side) was born July 3rd, 1903 in 1 Belgrave Place, Manningham, Bradford, England and was a stonemason, son of William Bell an engineer and Ruth Cordingley and he died on March 10th, 1962 at Princeville Street, Bradford, England.

William Bell the engineer as above, was born April 25th, 1873 in Shor Hill, Wyke, Bradford. He married Ruth Cordingley born 1873 in about 1896 daughter of James Cordingley and Hannah Laycock and Ruth died in Bradford, Yorkshire in 1920.

William and Ruth Bell had 11 children, only 8 surviving to adulthood. Stanley 1903, John Edgar ?, Daisy Irene 1909 d:1913, James Edward 1910 d:1912, Norman ?, Frances ?, Lily ?, Ivy ?, Madge ?, Hannah ?, Cyril 1916 d:1916.

John Bell (James) was William Bell's father, he was born December 12th, 1843 Barmby Moor, East Yorkshire. He married Hannah Goodall born 1845, Allerthorpe by Pocklington, daughter of Robert Goodall and Mary Harper and they had two children, William Bell above and Charles Bell born 1868 at Allerthorpe (Alverthorpe), Yorkshire. (Haven't followed up Charles line yet).
