Tingle Oral History
ARA TINGLE
Ara Tingle was born in southern Louisiana. Tingle is a French name. Ara was orphaned as a child, raised by a grandmother and then later an aunt. Apparently the aunt treated her badly.
She ended up in Bilby, Oklahoma and at the age of 13 was waiting tables in a boarding house, either in Bilby or Holdenville.
Joseph McAfee Yates saw her and decided to marry her.
The house she and Joseph lived in still stands in Holdenville, Oklahoma. On her grave marker is the inscription "IN MEMORIAM WOODMEN CIRCLE". She must have been a member of Woodmen Circle, which was a life insurance society founded in 1890 in Omaha, Nebraska.
