Abbreviations of the State Names of the U.S.
Cliff Lamere 3 Dec 2003
Two types of abbreviations are listed below. The standard abbreviations are the ones that would have appeared in genealogical and other records until recently when the U.S. postal service developed their two-letter codes which consist simply of two upper case letters. The standard abbreviations uses 2 to 4 letters and ends in a period. If the state's name consists of two words, then each word in the abbreviation begins with an upper case letter, and there is a period at the end of each part. For example, N.Y. or N.Mex.
