Diary of Ida Mae (McIntosh) Gardinier
This diary provides some insight into the horizons available to a young, relatively uneducated wife in a late nineteenth century small town (Canastota, Madison County, NY).
Each page of this single year diary contained three successive dates, each date followed by six blank lines on which Mae wrote her 1893 experiences. Following December 31 were sections called Memoranda, Addresses, and Engagements and a flyleaf (see note at beginning of that section).
In the transcription below, comments of Ida Mae are shown with ( ); comments of the transcriber are shown with [ ] except where they are accompanied by CWL, my initials.

Ida Mae (McIntosh) Gardinier - a short biography by Mary Ann (Gardinier) Hoffmann
Ida Mae McIntosh, born September 14, 1870, probably in Gloversville, N. Y., was one of the older children of a family of three sisters and two brothers. Before 1890, she married Myron E. Gardinier and spent the rest of her life in Canastota, N.Y., where she enjoyed the company of a circle of friends and neighbors and perhaps some relatives. Her firstborn son, Ray W. Gardinier, died June 3, 1890 at the age of 28 days. Lynn E., the second son, died October 9, 1891 as an infant. In April 1893, Myron and Mae took a 22-month-old boy, George, for whom they received adoption papers August 31, 1893. Nothing further has been discovered about this child. The only child to survive them was Olen, born August 11, 1895. Mae herself met a tragic end in a kitchen fire on July 15, 1899, at the age of 28. She is buried in the Gardinier plot, Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Canastota, N. Y.

Homes of the family of Ida Mae and Myron E. Gardinier
Myron built three houses on the east side of South Main Street (544, 542, and 538) at the southern edge of the village of Canastota, NY. He probably learned carpentry from his father John who was also a carpenter. A brother became a contractor and builder of houses in Auburn, NY. Ida Mae lived in 544 and 542.
South Main proceeds north from Route 5 (Seneca Turnpike). “Downstreet”, as mentioned in the diary, is further north around the canal and railroad tracks. Beyond that is the muck, which extends to Oneida Lake.
The sale of a house is discussed in the diary (Jan. 28, Feb. 2, 11, Mar. 4). I am fairly sure that it was 544 South Main St. that they were selling at that time, having recently moved from it into the newly built 542 South Main St. Between 544 and Rt. 5, there are still no other houses on that (east) side of the street or across the street.
In Aug 2003, the house at 542 South Main St. was a blue color. When I was young, it and 544 were both white. After building them, Myron built 538 South Main St., next lot north (to the left in the photos below), where he and second wife Pearl eventually lived. South of Rt. 5 was all hilly farmland at that time (malls, etc., now) except for the two cemeteries. Mount Pleasant Cemetery is at the end of Mount Pleasant Street, which extends a short distance south from Rt. 5, directly opposite South Main Street. Lenox Rural Cemetery is a bit to the west, also south of the highway.
