DIED WHILE SMOKING
William MUNDEY, aged 64, who lodged at 2, Denmark Cottages, Alverstoke, with Henry TILBURY, left home in apparent good health at 8.30 on Tuesday morning to go to his work, cutting grass on the Stokes Bay lines for Mr. George ADNAMS. He called at his employer's shop at half-past eleven, and was seen by Miss Amy ADNAMS. He was not seen alive again, but at four o'clock on Wednesday afternoon Edmund POOR, an old man of 64, living at Alverstoke, whilst searching for MUNDEY, found him in a sitting posture under a hedge on the scene of his work. His pipe was between his legs, as if he had died when smoking. MUNDEY had been unwell for five years, and had been attended by Dr. MEAD in the House of Industry.

Chilbolton brewery was at Down House, Winchester Street, and was owned by the Tilburys
The brewery blew up in January, 1884; this brought to an end hop-growing, brewing, and the Tilbury family's presence in Chilbolton

From the Liverpool Mercury published Friday, November 2, 1838
PORTSMOUTH, SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 17, 1838
The following Inquests have been held during the week, before C. B. LONGCROFT, Esq., Coroner for the County of Southampton: ...
At Gosport, on view of the body of Thomas TILBURY, a labouring man, who in passing over the drawbridge of the fortifications, near the top of North-street, accidentally fell from the bridge into the moat beneath; he was speedily got out of the water and every means used to restor animation, but without effect. The jury having viewed the place where the accident happened, returned a verdict of Accidental Death, and that the draw bridge, for want of proprer protection at the sides, being in a most dangerous state, the Coroner be requested to call the attention of her Majesty's Honourable Board of Ordnance thereto. ...

"Steventon: Saturday, October 27, 1798
My Dear Cassandra,
... Dame Tilbury's daughter has lain in. Shall I give her any of your baby clothes? ..."
Jane Austen

Letter from Cassandra Austen [nee Leigh] to Mary Austen [nee Lloyd], 10 April 1806:
... Explains that money left to the old shepherd now reverts absolutely to Dame Tilbury ...
Hampshire Record Office, Austen-Leigh Family, Catalogue Ref. 23M93 (See 'Access2Archives')

By extrapolation, a married daughter gave birth in 1798 whose parents were known to the AUSTEN family, the [TILBURY] father was a shepherd who d. c.1806, his wife survived him. The 'old shepherd' would seem to have been Mathew TILBURY d. 1800 age 82. His wife may have been 'Dame Tilbury' who inherited, since Susannah lived until 1824. In view of the apparent 14-year age difference between Mathew and Susannah, was she a second wife, did Mathew have a previous family? The dob of other TILBURYs in Steventon seem to indicate another family, if not Mathew's - then contemporary.

* The identities of the 'old shepherd' and 'Dame Tilbury' are confirmed by this quotation:
"Notes and Queries", Vol. 237, by Oxford Journals (Firm), William White, IngentaConnect (Online service), 1992
"This was Elizabeth/Betty TILBURY who had married George SMITH of Dummer at Church Oakley in 1793 and whose daughter Charlotte SMITH was baptized at Steventon on 5 September 1798. Although Jane did not refer to the event of the birth until 21 October, she had only just returned home from Godmersham."

* Additional material is available online (December 2005), including access to the following quotation from "Jane Austen's Letters", Oxford Univesity Press, provided by the Google Books Partner Program, and comes from the Biographical Index, online page 578.

"Tilbury, Dame.
In JA's time there were two Tilbury families amongst the Steventon villagers:
(1) Mathew (1718-1800) and Susannah (1732-1824) married 1758 and had four children:
- Mary, Betty, William, and Mathew;
(2) John (died 1812) and Anne (died 1809), probably married c.1765, who likewise had four children:
- Anne, Mary, Sarah, and William.
One or other of the Mary Tilburys married 1789 William Steevens (q.v.);
Sarah married 1796 Daniel Smallbone (q.v.);
and an Elizabeth Tilbury (presumably the 'Betty' above) married at Church Oakley 1793 George Smith of Dummer
- their daughter Charlotte Smith was baptized at Steventon on 5 September 1798."

"Twyford was part of the Hundred Hides of Chilcomb granted to the church at Winchester in the 7thC. In 964 King Edgar granted land in Twyford to Winchester Cathedral, and the manor was held by the Bishop from the King at the time of the Domesday survey. Twyford belonged to the See of Winchester until the mid-16thC, when the manor was surrendered to the crown in 1551. Edward VI granted Twyford to his uncle, Sir Henry Seymour who also held the Manor of Marwell in Owslebury Parish at this time. The Manor of Twyford, together with land at Owslebury, was sold to the Mildmay family in 1857."

For TILBURY bmd in Wherwell, see 'Chilbolton' above.

From the "Hampshire Chronicle":
Saturday, September 24, 1853
"The Wherwell Fair was fully supplied with both Sheep and Lambs. Business opened by sellers asking higher prices, which in the early part of the day were more willingly paid than towards the close. On the whole, it may be termed a slow fair, at prices equal to Wilton. Mr. TILBURY, of Chilbolton, had two very superior pens - one of Ewes, the other of Lambs."
