An inquest was taken before J. L. ELLIS, Esq., coroner for West Sussex, and a respectable jury, at Bognor, on the 16th inst., on the body of William HALL, baker, a person much respected. The circumstances, as detailed in evidence were as follows:-
The deceased had been for many weeks in a very melancholy and depressed state of mind. On Wednesday, 6th inst. he went to Chichester market, and did not return till about half-past ten at night. His wife and sister set up for him, and the former let him in; he seemed at the time in a very excited state but soon after went to his bed room; the deceased became very restless, and after lying in bed some time, got up and walked about; he then went down stairs, got possession of a razor, and returned to the up-stairs sitting room. The wife, finding the razor in his hand, took it from him and the deceased again went down stairs. The wife suspecting that he intended to do himself some mischief, run to the bed-room, of the journeyman, John TILBURY, and desired him to get up directly, as she feared that his master was gone to make away with himself. TILBURY immediately run down stairs, and followed the deceased into the kitchen, where he arrived just in time to see him draw another razor across his throat, & make a dreadful wound, which bled profusely. TILBURY immediately closed with deceased, threw him down, and took the razor from him; the wife at the same time ran out into the street to alarm the neighbours, and her sister went into the kitchen to desire TILBURY to go immediately for Mr. PESKETT, the Surgeon; in his absence the deceased took from his desk a third razor and in the presence of his sister made another incision in his throat. Mr. PESKETT soon arrived, and with the assistance of his servant, and TILBURY having secured the deceased, dressed and sewed up the wound. The deceased survived untill early in the morning of the 15th and then died. During this interval he was at times quite raving, and had on a straight-jacket: but a little before his death he became more composed. - Verdict, "That the deceased destroyed himself when in a fit of lunacy."
