- composer songwriter -
Walter Tilbury
"The Modern Don Quixote first opened in 1893 in the provinces and finally moved to the Strand Theatre in London. A revised version was opened in 1898 at the Lyric Theatre, and Tilbury wrote the music for the song That's Not The Sort of Girl I'd Care About for that production (lyrics by Alfred Morris).
Alice Through the Looking Glass was adapted from the original book by 'Y. Knott', with music by Walter Tilbury. It opened at the New Theatre* 22 December 1903 and ran for 60 performances ... George Grossmith, jr., was the music director.
Apparently Tilbury made his living as a composer of popular songs ... According to [the] list he also wrote the music for Princess Lolah; or The Love of the Rajah of Tittipompom a Comic Opera Satire for four performers, with libretto & lyrics by A. J. Morris." My thanks to J. Farron - see 'British Musical Theatre' below
[Walter Tilbury] "... composed the music for the 'fairy play' Alice Through the Looking Glass in 1903..." See below '187th Garland of British Light Music Composers'
"His music Hall songs include Jack the Handyman, The Land of the Free, Lazy, The Queen and the Shamrock, Respect our Queen... The Sheet Music is out there somewhere. I don't have any recordings of his songs." From B. Clark, 'MusichallCDs'
Other titles include Come Back Home to Ireland, Erin's Welcome to her Queen ... Roses, or, Our first Kiss, I ain't gwine to stand yer any more! ... this last carries the mention 'Written, composed & sung by Walter Tilbury' - was it a recording?
There were also collections of songs and music. A list of some of Walter Tilbury's published work follows with the website address of the detailed catalogue.
If anyone has any of his music, it would be great to be able to put a recording onsite!
Contemporary songwriter was Lionel Monckton:
"... Monckton occasionally supplied ... numbers for ... other ... shows ( ... A Modern Don Quixote, ... )"
*The name was changed to 'The Albery' in 1973 (St. Martin's Lane, London).
