In France where many died in WW1, the
symbol of remembrance is the cornflower.
The 'Chemin des Dames' in Picardy:
'"From mid-June until the end of August, thousands of cornflowers will be
in bloom along the Ladies' Way between the Gardian Angel crossroads
on the RN 2, and the town of Craonne.
They are planted by twenty farmers who cultivate the fields by the side of
the Chemin des Dames along the RD 18, in homage to all the soldiers and
civilians who died here in spring 1917, and in WW1 in general.
The flower-beds will be 12 meters deep and 21 ½: meters long."
(From a French website, July 2007.)
For the British - and others,
it is the poppy.
Please contribute the name of any Tilbury
you think should be remembered here.
Thankyou.
