"SS Transylvania"

Built in 1914 at Scot's Yard on the River Clyde, Scotland; 14,315 t.
Cunard liner designed for 1,379 passengers; transferred to Anchor Line; commanded by Lt. S. Brennell R.N.R.
Requisitoned by the Admiralty, modified to carry 200 officers, plus crew; and 2,860 military personnel.
On 3 May 1917 left Marseilles for Alexandria with an escort of two Japanese destroyers.
At 10.00 a.m. on 4 May off Cape Vado, Italy, the vessel was struck in the port engine-room by a torpedo; the ship diverted towards the shore and it was expected that she would float for about 3 hours. She was hit shortly afterwards by a 2nd torpedo and sank quickly, with the loss of 414 lives. There are memorials at Savona Italy, and Portsmouth UK.
