17. Thor King of Thrace was born about 270 B.C. in Asgard, Asia/East Europe.

Thor and the Midgard Serpent

Thor went out of Asgard disguised as a youth and came in the evening to a giant called Hymir. Thor stayed there that night. At daybreak Hymir got up and dressed and prepared to go sea-fishing in a rowboat. Thor sprang up and asked Hymir to let him go rowing with him. Hymir said that he would not be much help, as he was such a scrap of a young fellow: "You'll catch cold if I sit as long and as far out to sea as I usually do."

Thor, however, said he would be able to row a long way out from the shore, and that it wasn't certain that he would be the first to demand to be rowed back. He became so angry with the giant that he was ready to set the hammer ringing on his head. He controlled himself, however, as he intended to try his strength in another place. He asked Hymir what they were to take as bait, but Hymir told him to get his own. Then Thor turned away to where he saw a herd of oxen belonging to Hymir. He selected the biggest ox, one called Sky-Bellower, and struck off its head.

Thor took the ox-head on board, sat down in the stern, and rowed. Hymir thought they made rapid progress from his rowing. Hymir sat in the bow, and together they rowed until they came to the place where Hymir was accustomed to sit and catch flat fish. Thor said he wanted row much farther out, and they had another bout of fast rowing. Then Hymir said that they had come so far out that it would be dangerous to sit there on account of the Midgard Serpent (Midgardsormen).

Thor, however, declared his intention of rowing for a bit yet, and did so, and Hymir was not at all pleased at that. When Thor shipped his oars, he made ready a very strong line and a large hook. He baited the hook with the ox-head and flung it overboard.

The Midgard Serpent snapped at the ox-head, and the hook stuck fast in the roof of its mouth. It jerked away so hard that both Thor's fists knocked against the gunwale. Then Thor grew angry and, exerting all his divine strength, dug in his heels so hard that both legs went through the boat until he was digging his heels in on the sea bottom. He drew the serpent up on board, staring straight at it. The serpent glared back, belching poison. The giant Hymir turned pale with fear when he saw the serpent and the sea trembling in and out of the vessel too. At the very moment that Thor gripped his hammer and raised it aloft, the giant fumbled for his bait knife and cut Thor's line off at the gunwale.

The serpent sank back into the sea. Thor flung his hammer after it and people say that this struck its head off in the waves; but the truth is that the Midgard Serpent is still alive and is lying in the ocean. Thor clenched his fist and gave Hymir a box on the ear so that he fell overboard head first, but Thor himself waded ashore.

Thor married Sibil (Sif) , Prophetess . Sibil was born about 270 B.C. in Asgard, Asia/East Europe.

84. Odin (Woutan, Woden) King of Scandanavia was born about 215 in Asgard, Asia/East Europe and died in 270.

Woden was chief among the Northland gods. He came from the near east (Mesopotamia--Babylon) and made his way northward into Scandinavia, where his name was pronounced, Odin. When the Germanics adopted him they acquired some new and more exalted ideas of what a god could or should be. For gradually Odin grew into a very wise god who knew everything that was going on in the world. On each of his shoulders perched a sharp-eyed wag-tongued raven who flew forth to the ends of the earth and came back to prattle everything it saw. Sometimes Odin himself toured the world on his white horse, Sleipnir, who had eight legs to give him greater speed. At other times Odin preferred to hike, wrapped in his blue cloak and wearing his broad-brimmed hat, carrying his wander's staff.

What is amazing about Woden is his capacity for becoming someone else, or for merging with someone else to make a new person. As we trace the roots that Woden has struck into the life of the Germanic peoples, we find him turning up in the most unexpected places. He merged into the legend of a great king who has never died but now sleeps inside a mountain while the ravens fly about outside, a king who will wake up some day, when his nation needs his help to fight off the enemy.

In the beginning the Vikings were Heathens, and believed in the old Nordic gods, like Odin who was the chief of the Viking gods. Odin or Woden only had one eye because he was said to have traded it in for a drink at the Well of Knowledge to become even more clever. He also was said to have two ravens, thought and memory. They were sent out each day to tell Odin what was going on in the world. He rode an eight legged horse called Sleipnir. He had messengers called the Valkyries who lead the soles of heroes up to Valhalla.

The Creation of the World

At the beginning of time there was nothing but a great void called Ginnungagap, a void filled with powerful magic forces.

Long before the earth was formed there existed Niflheimr, the dark misty world of death. In Niflheimr was a well called Hvergelmir (literally, "roaring kettle") from which eleven rivers flowed.

In the south lay the blazing hot world of Mspell over which the giant Surtr ("black") held sway.

The rivers whipped by showers pouring out of Niflheimr froze and layer after layer of ice piled up in Ginnungagap. However, sparks and glowing embers flying out of Mspell met the hoarfrost and the ice, and from the slush and heat life emerged in the shape of an anthropomorphic primeval being who received the name of Ymir, or Aurgelmir.

From this primal giant sprang the dreadful brood of the frost giants, whom he engendered by sweating a male and a female from under his left arm and begetting a son from one of his legs with the other.

The melting rime taks the shape of a cow, Auhumla (literally, "rich hornless cow"). This cow feeds Ymir with the milk flowing from her udders. Auhumla gets her own food by licking the salty ice blocks, but in doing so, she gives shape to another primal being, Bri, who begets a son, Borr. Borr marries Bestla, the daughter of the giant Bolorn (literally, "evil thorn").

Borr and his wife have three sons: inn (Odin), Vili, and V. When the three divine brothers kill the giant Ymir, the flow of blood gushing from his wounds drowns all the frost giants (hrmursar), except Bergelmir, who escapes mysteriously with his family to continue the race.

Now the gods set about building the earth. The body of Ymir is carried into the middle of the great void; his blood forms the sea and the lakes, his flesh the earth, and his skull the sky (with a dwarf at each corner, as if to uphold it), his hair the trees, his brain the clouds, his bones the mountains, and so on. Sparks from Mspell forms the stars and heavenly bodies, and the gods order their movements, determining the divisions of time. The earth was circular, surrounded by a vast ocean. In the middle of the earth the gods established Migarr, a residence for mankind, strengthened by a fence made from the eyebrows of Ymir, and they gave land on the shore for the giants to settle down. The next task of the gods was the creation of man, which is related in the myth of Askr and Embla (Volusp 17-18). Finally, they built sgarr (Asgard), their own residence.

Odin married Frigg (Freya) , Queen of Asgard , daughter of Cadwalladr and Unknown . Frigg was born about 219 in Asgard, Asia/East Europe.
