General Notes:
James was a Quaker and Carpenter by trade. This connection has not yetbeen documented. James also had a brother Samuel that came to Americanprobably prior to their first cousin Marmaduke Coats and Ann Pole'sarrival in America. Samuel Coats married Mary Saunders (Sanders) theyalso had a son named William, the dates of probable birth would seem tobe much closer. Samuel also had a son named Marmaduke. After James'death Mary Watson went back to New Jersey, she and James lived in Pennprior to his death. Samuel and Mary Saunders lived in Bucks county Penn. Samuel was a carpenter and his sonMarmaduke was a carpenter. My father Claud Russell Coats and my UncleRobert Daniel Coats were also carpenters. My father use to tellme whenI was young, that he was a carpenter because we had some ancestors inPenn that were carpenters. Therefore, I believe that our Coats line isthrough either James or His brother John. Their father was John Coatsthe brother of Marmaduke Coats who married Edith Swatherwith (sp) thepartents of Marmaduke who married Ann Pole. John and Marmaduke bothspent a good many years in prison in England for persecution for notpaying tithes to the Church of England thus promoting their movetoAmerica. They also had another brother, Thomas who went to CarlowIreland.
James married Mary Watson on 8 Dec 1692 in Philadelphia Mm, Philadelphia, PA. (Mary Watson died before 1720.)
