The family moved to Peter's Township in Cumberland County in 1779,then to Frederick County, Maryland in 1781. In 1796 his family movedto Rockbridge Count, Virginia. Then in 1807 they were in BotetourtCounty, Virginia. Mathias married Mary "Polly" Hill, who was born inNew Jersey, daughter of James and Sarah. In the will of Nicholas hewas confirmed in 150 acres on which he then lived. This land wasprobably in Rockbridge County. Mathias and his wife, Mary, conveyedsubstantial acreage in Rockbridge in 1804 and 1805 and sold a 150 acretract on Cedar Creek to William Shields in August, 1814. By 1827Mathias and his family had moved to Hiwassee, McMinn County,Tennessee. He would be joined later by his mother Evey, daughterElizabeth and her husband Henry John. After Mary Hill's death,Mathias married Mary "Polly" Fenny. Mathias was a carpenter. He builthis home on Sec. 29, Twp.5, Rng.1, east of Median. He owned his land.Mathias and his wife were buried in a small cemetary near their home.
[8802] This instrument is recorded in Will Book E, pp 89, McMinn County,Tennessee. It was executed 21 Apr 1850. In it Mathias named his wifePolly; sons William, Samuel, John, and David; and other heirs AlfredFirestone, James, Douglas, and wife Elizabeth; and heirs of Joseph andSarah Cobb(s). Executors were named as Samuel Firestone and E.P.Bloom. It is noteworthy that this document recognizes that SamuelFirestone was the brother of Sarah Firestone, wife of Joseph Cobb(s).

[474] On November 28, 1760, Thomas bought land in Amelia County which hadbeen the estate of Colonel Edward Booker, half brother of GeorgeBooker. It was here that Thomas and Sarah made their home, and whereThomas served as High Sheriff in 1779. For several generations aMumford and Munford family lived side-by-side in Amelia County, and attimes interchanged in records and reports of these families. Thomasused the 'm' spelling, and may have been a descendant of the ThomasMumford (Mountfort) who came to Virginia on the ship "First Supply",and was a member of the second Virginia Company of London in 1609.
