Ty Cobb always revered his father, W.H., even long after his death in August 1905. Ty had a solid role model in his father. William H. was a school teacher and college graduate who moved from town to town in northern Georgia until he finally settled in Royston in the early 1890s.

W.H. was well respected by the townspeople and aspired for the U.S. Congress, having held a seat in the Georgia state senate.  In 1883, at the age of twenty, he married 12-year-old Amanda Chitwood.  Due to her young age, she did not bear a child until December 1886, when Tyrus Raymond was born. W.H. was to father two more children with Amanda --- John Paul in 1888 and Florence Leslie in 1892.

W.H. eventually bought a 100-acre farm in Royston to supplement his income from teaching. It was on this farm that he sought to teach Ty the values of hard work and perseverance. It was also in those fields that Ty grew strong and learned to play baseball. W.H. strongly discouraged Ty from playing the game, fearing that his first- born would become a drunk womanizer like the stereotypical big league ball-players.

When Ty, at 18, approached his father to ask for his blessing to try out for the Augusta Sally League team, W.H. reluctantly acquiesced. He figured that it would be best for his son to get the baseball out of his system and return home to pursue a career as a doctor, lawyer, or military man.

In the summer of 1905, with Ty off pursuing his baseball dreams, rumors began to circulate about the fidelity of Amanda. At 33, Amanda had already been married for 20-plus years, and might have become tired of W.H.  In any case, W.H. devised a plan to determine once and for all the faithfulness of his wife.  On the night of August 8, 1905, he told her that he would be going out of town for a few days.  That night, with Ty in Augusta and the other two children at friends' houses, Amanda locked the doors and windows. W.H. returned with a pistol. He climbed up the side of the house to the balcony outside his bedroom. He tried to open the window, but found it locked. Amanda heard the scratching outside, and picked up the loaded double-barrel shotgun kept in the bedroom and pulled the trigger once.  After a short pause, she fired again, mortally wounding her husband on the balcony.  He was pronounced dead shortly after 1 AM.

He was married to Amanda CHITWOOD (daughter of Caleb CHITWOOD) on February 11, 1886 in Banks County, Georgia.  Amanda CHITWOOD was born on January 15, 1871 in Georgia.  She appeared on the census on January 14, 1920 in Fulton County, Georgia (Atlanta).  She appeared on the census on April 17, 1930 in Fulton County, Georgia (13th Ward, Atlanta).  She died on October 19, 1939.  She was buried in Franklin County, Georgia (Rose Hill Cemetery, Royston).

Ty Cobb's mother never played a major role in his life. He respected her as anyone would respect his own mother, but they were never really close.  She was the daughter of Caleb Chitwood, a well-respected man in his community, one of the first places where W.H. Cobb taught. She married W.H. when she was only twelve, and was probably a pupil of his. Caleb Chitwood apparently was not that thrilled about betrothing his 12-year old daughter, but did anyway in 1883. Three years later she gave birth to Ty. The reason for the long delay between marriage and the birth of their first child probably had something to do with her young age.

Amanda was the person that Ty first told about his plans to go to Augusta to try out for a minor league baseball team, and she gave her blessing but did nothing else.  It was in the summer of 1905 that her life changed forever, when she killed her husband.  She was tried for voluntary manslaughter, but acquitted by an all-male jury.  The prosecutor never brought up the subject of her suspected infidelity at the trial, which might have prevented him from getting a conviction.  After the trial, she never remarried, and some point to that as proof of her innocence of adultery.  She survived until 1939.  It is reported that Ty visited her only occasionally and really had very little to do with her.   William Herschel COBB and Amanda CHITWOOD had the following children:

+110                      i.    Tyrus Raymond COBB Sr (born on December 18, 1886).
