Strath Kanaird, from an old postcard
Achendrean was, and remains, the major community in Strathcanaird. Maps today simply refer to it as Strathcanaird.
Starting 1861 the Households of that part of Coigach "beyond the great rock" were enumerated separate from the rest of Lochbroom, however Achendrean in Strathcanaird, and the Lochbroom communities down to and including Ullapool, had earlier been historically included as part of Coigach, and so eventually I hope to include on this website annotated censuses for them all, including the following Households at Achendrean.
Aulay MacAulay was for sometime Tacksman of Achendrean,
I have not seen a copy of the 1755 Judicial Rental of the Barony of Coigach myself, but it is referenced by several sources as "E 746/70/77 et seq". Note #4 on pages 386 and 387 of the book "Peoples and Settlement in North-West Ross" in the chapter by the book's editor, John R. Baldwin titled "At the back of the great rock: Crofting and Settlement in Coigach, Lochbroom" discusses testimony regarding early 18th rental of the Forest of Coigach recorded in the Judicial Rental. The note includes the following quote by Alexander Mackenzie of Ardmair who said the Earl of Cromartie about 1725 was in Coigach setting tacks and offered to set the Forest at about £100 Scots yearly;
"2 gentlemen of the Country, the dec. Alex MacKenzie of Corrie and Aulay McAulay of Auchindrein in odium of each other did raise the same by roup to 31 sterling yearly which was continued to be paid until the year 1745 by Alex McKenzie who was the highest offerer."
N.A.S. GD176/729 is indexed as;
Contract of Marriage, dated at Lettoch, 4th December 1722, of Aulay Mackaulay [McAulay], eldest lawful son of John Macaulay [McAulay], tacksman of Kirkibost in Lewis, and Marjory Mackintosh [McIntosh], fourth lawful sister of William Mackintosh [McIntosh] of Daviot, with consent of her said brother. Her tocher is 700 merks. Among the witnesses were Roderick Mackenzie [McKenzie] of Redcastle, Mr. Ludovick Mackenzie [McKenzie], and Mr. James Mackenzie [McKenzie], his lawful sons, Captain John Mackenzie [McKenzie], brother-german to Kincraig, and John M'Bean [McBean], Sheriff Clerk of Inverness: also Extract thereof, dated 23d November 1757: and Discharge by the said Aulay Macaulay [McAulay] of Auchindrean [Achindrean], to AEneas Mackintosh [McIntosh] of Mackintosh [McIntosh], brother and heir of the said William Mackintosh of Daviot, for the said tocher and interest due thereupon promised with his now deceased wife, Marjory Mackintosh [McIntosh]; dated at the Kirkton of Lochbroom, 16th February 1758.
Marjory was a grandaughter of the seventeenth Chief of Clan Mackintosh, her two brothers noted above were Chief's, William after the death of their second cousin in 1731 as twentyfirst, AEneas (or "Angus") at the death of William in 1741 as twentysecond. Their father, Lachlan Mackintosh of Daviot, was married to Anne Mackenzie, a daughter of Colin Mackenzie, IV of Redcastle, hence the inclusion of Marjory's uncle Roderick, V of that family, and two of his sons.
Marjory's brother AEneas raised one of the "Independant Companies" of militia to fight for the government in the 1745 Rebellion, he was far outdone though as a recruiter by his wife, who raised twice as many to fight for Bonny Prince Charlie! Aeneas was captured by Cromartie's rebel Regiment and paroled to custody of his wife, she greeted him, "your servant, Captain", he replied "your servant, Colonel", terms they used for each other the rest of their lifes.
The following events are extracted from those pages of the Lochbroom Parish Register that I have photocopied, where it mentions a person with residence at Achendrean, Strathcanaird, or one of the many spelling variations of those names, first christenings (generally form was date, father's name and residence, child's name);
In the early 1850s, before the start of Civil Registration in 1855, the Parish Clerk began adding a lot more info, there is one christening listed there mentioning Strathcanaird;
Childs name: Margaret Illegitimate Father's Name: Alexr McDonald Mother's Name: Margaret McKenzie Occupation: Teacher Residence: Strathcainard When Born: Dec.12 1850 When Baptized: April 2 1851 By whom Baptized: Rev.Wm Cameron, Lochbroom When Registered: June 9 - 1851
And the following marriages are extracted from the Parish Register where it mentions a person with residence at Achendrean, Strathcanaird, or one of the many spelling variations of those names. Generally form was date, father's name and residence, mother's name and residence;
"... two of my ancestors, the very last entry on the marriage list, William Mckenzie of Scoraig and Annabella Mackenzie Achindrean. As far as I know they went on to live in Lots of Scoraig, he died leaving Annabella to carry on alone with her children untill 1870-80 when she moved to Inverness where she died in 1911..."
In the late 1840, early '50s, before the start of Civil Registration in 1855, the Parish Clerk began adding a lot more info, there are a few marriages listed there mentioning Strathcanaird;

In the 1851 census James is married to Helen, they, with his mother and a son, are at Achendrean 51-7.
The Parish Register records the marriage 9 August, 1849 of James McKenzie, Labourer resident Strathcanaird, to Helen McKenzie, resident Morefield, the name of Helen's father is lost in the fold of the page, though he is noted as being a crofter at Morefield. I think "Helen" is the "Fanny" in this census at Achendrean 41-18.

This Household is on Page 5 of Enumeration District #11. All listed as born in County.
In the 1851 census there are two possible enumerations of Murdo. First is Widowed with his son Kenneth's wife and child, and his then still unmarried son Alexander, at Achendrean 51-16. Second is as Visitor to a MacLennan family at Ullapool 51-5.
There is a tablestone in the Ullapool old burial ground;
Murdoch MACDONALD, Free Church Elder Strathcanaird, d 6.1854 aged 78 yrs,
wife Jane MACKENZIE d 5.1848, aged 70 erected by youngest son Alexander MacDonald.
(Alexander was a stonemason in Scotland and did the stone himself before emigrating to Australia).
Kenneth marries 1 February, 1849 to Isabella McKenzie who is in this census with her father, stepmother, and other relatives at Badenscallie 41-2. Descendants of Kenneth and Isabella today include Hector MacDonald who with his family has the "Dromnan Guest House" on the Garve Road of Ullapool, and Fiona MacDonald who with her husband has the B & B "Chenoweth" at Strathcanaird.
The marriage of young Janet is recorded 28 February, 1845 in the Parish Register; "Angus McLeod Strathcainaird, and Janet McDonald, Strathcainaird Coigeach". The couple with three children are in the 1851 census at Achendrean 51-27.
A son of Murdo and Jane, Roderick, was christened 19 August 1811, at "Achdren", and died 20 August, 1898 at Strathcanaird, his descendants include Donald Halley (CONTACT INFO). Roderick is in this census at the home of his wife Ann MacLeod at Achiltibuie 41-39. The couple with their children are in the 1851 census in the Household next to Roderick's Widowed father at Achendrean 51-17.
Young Alexander above marries in June 1856 at Ullapool to Robertina "Robina" Menzies (born about 1837 at Altnacealgach by Lairg, Sutherland, to James Menzies and Isabella Whannell, Innkeepers there). Alexander and Robina emigrated to Australia, where their descendants include Jeanette Bonnici (CONTACT INFO). Jeanette and her cousin Donald Halley have provided much of the info in these files on Achendrean MacDonalds.
Likely Rory Macdonald at Achendrean 41-19 was a brother of Murdoch, Rory's parents are listed in his death registration 2 June, 1858, age listed as 61, as having been Kenneth McDonald and Ann MacKenzie. Janet MacLeod, Widow of Murdoch MacLeod dies 6 November, 1861, age listed as 74, at nearby Morefield with the same parents listed (Informant of her death was "Simon McLeod Nephew", not yet sure if he was related through MacLeods or MacDonalds).
The Parish Register records the christenings 5 June, 1814 at Achendrean of sons named Kenneth to both Murdo and Donald MacDonald, possibly an honour naming on the death of their father. Based on the christenings, looks like children of Kenneth MacDonald and Ann MacKenzie born at Strathcainaird in the late 1700s were;

I think "Helen" is the "Fanny" above. James is in this census at Achendrean 41-4. In the 1851 census Fanny as "Helen", with James, his mother and a son, are at Achendrean 51-7.

John do. 5Notes on this Household:
This Household is on Page 7 and 8 of Enumeration District #11. All listed as born in County.
In the 1851 census this family is at Achendrean 51-20.
The Parish Register records the marriage of "Roderick McDonald Achindren StrathKennaird to Cathrine Urquhart there" 14 February 1822, then confusingly the same named couple again 26 February, 1822, likely a transcription error by the Parish Clerk.
Roderick "Rory" dies 2 June, 1858 at Strathcainaird, age listed then as 61 years. Informant of the death was his son John, he lists Roderick's parent as having been Kenneth McDonald and Ann MacKenzie.
Catherine dies 30 March, 1866 at Strathcanaird, age listed as 74 years, parents had been John Urquhart and Mary Fraser, Informant again was her son John.
The Parish Register includes two christenings at Achendrean with Roderick MacDonald as father; Roderick christened 28 May, 1825, and Kenneth christened 22 June, 1828.
The Parish Register records a christening 30 January 1814 at Achendrean of Janet with Kenneth as father, my guess is that Kenneth was a brother of Roderick. Also recorded 5 June, 1814 at Achendrean both Murdo and Donald MacDonald had sons christened as Kenneth, possibly an honour naming on the death of their father. Based on the christenings, looks like children of Kenneth MacDonald and Ann MacKenzie born at Strathcainaird in the late 1700s were;

The Parish Register includes; 24 March, 1820 "Thomas McKenzie Strath Kennaird to Mary Matheson there". Seeing the forenames Simon and Thomas, with forename MacKenzie in this area suggests their father George was an undocumented member of the MacKenzie of Langwell family.

The marriage of young Catherine is registered 1872 at Ullapool to Alexander Robertson, both resident at Strathcanaird. The registration notes her parents as Alexander MacKenzie and Ann, Maiden Surname MacKenzie, his as Murdoch Robertson, deceased, and Margaret McLeod. I think Alex's father died before the 1841 census, where he can be seen with a MacLeod family (relatives of his mother?) at Ardmair 41-9.
This family includes ancestors of the husband of Margaret Todd at Timaru, N.Z., she has shared details from her research and that of other descendants. She notes Alexander's parents John MacKenzie and Helen, maiden surname MacKenzie (both in the 1841 census, Helen above Widowed). Alexander was born 12 November, 1800, died 12 February, 1889 at Feilding, N.Z., Ann was also maiden surname MacKenzie born about 1810 to Murdoch MacKenzie and Margaret MacKenzie, she died 10 March, 1890 at Feilding.
Margaret notes young Roderick above died 17 June, 1890 at Waipukurau, N.Z., before emigrating he married in 1868 at Elgin to Margaret Cameron.
Margaret also notes young Catherine above died 13 September, 1917 at Ngaura, N.Z., as noted above she married Alexander Robertson, then emigrated to N.Z.

This family was in the 1841 census at Achendrean 41-19. In the 1861 census Catherine is Widowed with two children at Achendrean 61-12, with Catherine McLeod listed as "Relative", the 1871 census lists her relationship to the children of Roderick and Catherine as "Cousin", my guess is she was cousin to Roderick, which would explain the ambiguous term "Relative" in 1861.
Roderick "Rory" dies 2 June, 1858 at Strathcainaird, age listed then as 61 years. Informant of the death was his son John, he lists Roderick's parent as having been Kenneth McDonald and Ann MacKenzie.
The Parish Register records the marriage of "Roderick McDonald Achindren StrathKennaird to Cathrine Urquhart there" 14 February, 1822, then confusingly the same named couple again 26 February, 1822, likely a transcription error by the Parish Clerk.

Notes on this Household:
This Household is on page 8 of Enumeration District 6 at Household 29. Donald and Ann marked as born in Coigach, Cathrine at Leckmelm, Christy at Assynt (the neighbouring Parish), and young Mary at Achindrean.
In the 1861 census Ann is a Widow at Kenachullish 61-81. Donald's death seems to date from this census to the start of civil registration in 1855.
The Parish Register records the marriage 6 February, 1815 of Anne McDonald resident at Achnahaird to Donald McLeod resident at Leckmelm. No sign yet of the family in the 1841 census.
Not certain yet how Christy was related to Donald or Ann. Her death is registered as 12 January, 1856 at North Kenachulish, age listed then as 81. The death registration says she was wife of a MacKenzie, and her parents had been John MacDonald and Margaret Cameron.
There was no Morrison family at Achendrean in the 1851 census, my assumption is Mary Morrison was an illegitamate daughter of Cathrine.
Ann's death registration 24 August, 1869 names her father as Donald McDonald. I think Donald McDonald of Achnahaird was a brother of my own gt-gt-gt-grandfather, John MacDonald of the neighbouring village of Reiff. The Parish Register records three marriages of McDonalds resident at Achnahaird in 1815, '18, and '20, and in christenings to Alexander McDonald there from 1819 to 1833. Anyone with an interest in this family please use my CONTACT INFO.
Anne is two households away from Achindrean Strathcanaird McDonalds (Janet at Achendrean 51-27), possibly there is some yet undocumented relationship. Patriarch of the Achindrean McDonald family, Murdoch, was of an age to be brother of Donald of Achnahaird and John of Reiff, unfortunately he died 1854, the year before the start of civil registration.

"Margaret" in other records is noted as "Ann".
The marriage of young Catherine is registered as 6 June, 1872 at Ullapool to Alexander Robertson, both resident at Strathcanaird, her age 26 years, his 37. Alexander and his mother are in this census at Achendrean 61-25, John Robertson in the next Household, Achendrean 61-16 was likely a brother of Alexander.
This family includes ancestors of the husband of Margaret Todd at Timaru, N.Z., she has shared details from her research and that of other descendants. She notes Alexander's parents were John MacKenzie and Helen, maiden surname MacKenzie (both in the 1841 census). Alexander was born 12 November, 1800, died 12 February, 1889 at Feilding, N.Z., Ann was also maiden surname MacKenzie born about 1810 to Murdoch MacKenzie and Margaret MacKenzie, she died 10 March, 1890 at Feilding.
Margaret notes another child of this family, Roderick, died 17 June, 1890 at Waipukurau, N.Z., before emigrating he married in 1868 at Elgin to Margaret Cameron.
Margaret also notes young Catherine above died 13 September, 1917 at Ngaura, N.Z., as noted above she married Alexander Robertson, then emigrated to N.Z.

Donald Halley (CONTACT INFO) is descended from Roderick and Ann through their daughter Jane, who married Colin MacKenzie 3 June, 1874 at Dingwall. Donald has done lots of research on this family (see link in his CONTACT INFO to his great web page), and believes Annie MacKenzie above to be a daughter of Jane McDonald and Colin Mackenzie born 12 February, 1876 in Strathcanaird.
Roderick's occupation listed here as a Road Contractor matches the details of his daughters marriage to Colin MacKenzie in Dingwall in 1874.
